5-0 out of 5 stars A must have reference handbook for Toxicologists and Regulatory Scientists
This book is recommended for both regulatory scientists and toxicologists dealing with metals exposures. The first 16 chapters cover fundamental concepts in metals toxicology and provide good coverage of factors important in health risk assessment. These preliminary chapters detail for the reader the myriad of issues that need to be taken into account when assessing metals and environmental data while drawing on relevant literature to illustrate points being made.Detailed reviews of individual metals are provided in subsequent chapters and it is invaluable having such in-depth coverage in a single volume. It would appear that some chapters were initially written a couple of years prior to publication so that the most recent information is not always included, but this is to be expected in such a publication. This handbook is highly recommended for anyone dealing with the toxicology of metals and is a must have for toxicologists involved in the assessment of environmental data.

Book Description
The activities of modern society have unleashed a range of toxic chemicals into the global environment. Many of these toxicants are now being detected in increasing quantities in the tissues of marine mammals, most notably in top predators who acquire relatively large amounts of toxic chemicals by ingesting contaminated prey.Toxicology of Marine Mammals focuses on the effects of natural and introduced toxicants on organs and systems in marine mammals. It provides overviews on health status and contamination, with subsequent chapters devoted to whales, pinnipeds, dolphins, polar bears, manatees, and sea otters. Internationally renowned researchers assess the mounting evidence for adverse effects on reproduction and the chemically-induced increased susceptibility to death from infectious diseases. The concluding chapter addresses perspectives and issues for the future. This compelling book features research from a vast geographic landscape ranging from the tropics to the Arctic, with case studies on intriguing areas of contamination such as the St. Lawrence River and the Baltic Sea. It identifies the severe threats that environmental contaminants pose to the health and future of marine mammals. It also makes an urgent call for legislation to regulate the incessant pollution ravaging our seas and devastating the marine mammal population worldwide. Toxicologists working in marine biology and veterinary medicine, conservation scientists, fisheries scientists, environmental scientists, and wildlife managers will all benefit from this comprehensive resource. Book Description
This book covers all aspects of toxicology, including toxic diseases of large animals, small animals, and exotic pets. It provides key information on how poisons affect the body, how the body responds to a foreign substance, how poisonings are diagnosed, and how poisonings are treated. Coverage includes every organ system of every species of animal with details on each body system's susceptibility to poison. Poisons affect animals differently depending on species, breed, age, gender, health status, and reproductive status. This resource addresses these differences, allowing the veterinarian to determine the class of toxicant, the mechanism of action, and the proper course of treatment. If confronted with an unknown poison, the information in this book will assist the veterinarian in formulating a list of potential poisons based on the clinical signs that the animal is exhibiting, and in choosing the appropriate tests to narrow the list to one or a few possible poisons. ... Book Description
Reflecting more than a decades worth of changes, Animal Models in Toxicology, Second Edition is a practical guide to the common statistical problems encountered in toxicology and the methodologies that are available to solve them. The book presents a historical review of the use of animal models and an overview of broad considerations of metabolism and relevance used in toxicology. Individual chapters covering the eight major species used in toxicology and experimental biology form the core of the book. With contributions from experts in toxicology, toxicological pathology, and species-specific metabolism, each of these chapters provide an excellent introductory course along with guidance to the literature for more detailed understanding.

The book goes on to make the case for a range of species not commonly used for safety assessment studies but which may provide useful alternative models for some specific endpoints. The chapter authors discuss special considerations regarding theevaluation and interpretation of the clinical pathology of the eight major model species as well as how to select a model species and how to extrapolate the results to humans. They detail potential pitfalls and situations that cause either human or model to be significantly more sensitive than the other or totally irrelevant to each other. The book concludes with an overview of the increasingly complex laws and regulations that govern how laboratory animals are obtained, maintained, and utilized, and an appendix that provides a quick guide to commercial sources of laboratory animals. ... Book Description
The analytical toxicologist may be required to detect, identify, and in many cases measure a wide variety of compounds in samples from almost any part of the body or in related materials such as residues in syringes or in soil. This book gives principles and practical information on the analysis of drugs and poisons in biological specimens, particularly clinical and forensic specimens.

After providing some background information the book covers aspects of sample collection, transport, storage and disposal, and sample preparation. Analytical techniques - colour tests and spectrophotometry, chromatography and electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, and immunoassay – are covered in depth, and a chapter is devoted to the analysis of trace elements and toxic metals. General aspects of method implementation/validation and laboratory operation are detailed, as is the role of the toxicology laboratory in validating and monitoring the performance of point of care testing (POCT) devices. The book concludes with reviews of xenobiotic absorption, distribution and metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and general aspects of the interpretation of analytical toxicology results.

  • A clearly written, practical, integrated approach to the basics of analytical toxicology.
  • Focuses on analytical, statistical and pharmacokinetic principles rather than detailed applications.
  • Assumes only a basic knowledge of analytical chemistry.
  • An accompanying website provides additional material and links to related sites.

Book Description
Nutrients are gaining recognition for their role in protecting against the toxic effects of free radicals, alcohol and other substances. At the same time, advances in food technology, the appearance of novel foods and new ingredients have generated new toxicological issues and forced health and safety professionals to develop new and more reliable methods to assess their impact on our health. These issues are at the heart of the second edition of Nutritional Toxicology. The book discusses the role of nutrients in protecting the body against toxicants. It explores the overall importance of the metabolism of xenobiotics and antioxidant nutrients in their increasingly important role in protecting against oxidative damage generated by free radicals. The book also discusses components of the diet that can influence metabolism of drugs, how alcohol consumption affects nutritional status, and conversely, how nutritional status affects alcohol metabolism. The effect of age on the body's ability to metabolize drugs and toxicants is discussed in detail. ... Read more
