Extractions: De Quincey was the son of a Manchester merchant. There were eight children in the family, four girls and four sons. Thomas was born the 15th of August, 1785, the fifth child, the second son. He was but seven years old when his father died; the family, however, due to the success of Mr. De Quincey's business was to be left fairly well off. Mrs De Quincey, in 1796, was to move to the fashionable city of Bath. De Quincey was an able student but was soon caught up with the romantic notions of the age and ran away, ending up wondering around Wales. De Quincey was to write of it: "On leaving school clandestinely, which I did some weeks before my seventeenth birthday, I went into Wales; where I continued for months to walk about. As long as I kept up any negotiations with my guardians, I received a regular allowance of a guinea a week." Eventually he found himself in London in November of 1802. For months thereafter, De Quincey was to live on the streets. Here, in London, he was to pass a number of months "of wild, haggard, Bohemian roaming and staggering from worse to worse!" By the autumn of 1803, De Quincey was back with his family, members of whom prevailed, and, so, it was off to Oxford (Worcester College). He was registered at Oxford for a number of years, though it doesn't seem he spent much time there; he much preferred to go down and spend time at London. From what I can see, he never sat for his degree. (It was at Oxford, incidently, that De Quincey, seemingly, permanently, became addicted to opium.)

De Quincey was addicted to opium from his youth for the rest of his life. His influence on Poe, Baudelaire, and ordinary readers tempted to experiment with opium, has been immense and notorious. "The mere understanding, however useful and indispensable, is the meanest faculty in the human mind, the most to be distrusted; and yeat the great majority of people trust to nothing else, - which may do for ordinary life, but not for philosophical purposes." (from 'The Knocking at the Gate in' Macbeth, 1823 Thomas De Quincey was born in the industrial city of Manchester, Lancashire, as the son of a wealthy linen merchant. He was educated at schools in Bath and Winkfield, ending at Manchester Grammar School from which he ran away to Wales at the age of 17 - with the knowledge and support of his mother and uncle. Later De Quincey returned to this period in his autobiographical book Confessions of an English Opium Eater . Between the years 1802 and 1803 he lived in London in poverty before returning back home. To opium De Quincey became addicted in 1804 when he studied at Worcester College, Oxford. He used it first to relieve acute neuralgia pains. He kept a decanter of laudanum by his elbow and steadily encreased to dose.

Extractions: Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow, 1821 Introductory Note Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) was born at Manchester, England, the son of a merchant of literary tastes. He was a precocious student, but, revolting from the tyranny of his schoolmaster, he ran away, and wandered in Wales and in London, at times almost destitute. On his reconciliation with his family he was sent to Oxford, and during this period began taking opium. The rest of his life was spent mainly in the Lake Country, near Wordsworth and Coleridge, later in London, and finally in Edinburgh and the neighborhood. He succeeded in checking but not abandoning his addiction to the drug, the craving for which was caused by a chronic disease which nothing else would alleviate. Most of De Quincey's writings were published in periodicals, and cover a great range of subjects. He was a man of immense reading, with an intellect of extraordinary subtlety, but with a curious lack of practical ability. Though generous to recklessness in money matters, and an affectionate friend and father, his predominating intellectuality led him even in his writings to analyze the characters of his friends with a detachment that sometimes led to estrangement. His most famous work, "The Confessions of an English Opium Eater" (1821) was based on his own experiences, and it has long held its place as a classic. Here, and still more in his literary and philosophical writings, he shows a remarkable clearness and precision of style, his love of exact thinking at times leading him to hair-splitting in his more abstruse discussions. In what he called the "department of impassioned prose," of which the following piece is one of the most magnificent examples, he has a field in which he is unsurpassed. To the power of thought and expression found throughout his work is here added a gorgeousness of imagination that lifts his finest passages into the region of the sublime.

( De Quincey hatte die Droge zunächst aus therapeutischen Gründen genommen, um die durch Gesichtsrheumatismus bedingten Schmerzen zu bekämpfen, nahm schließlich aber bis zu 8.000 Tropfen täglich.)
