He records his encounter with Ricardian theory in his famous Confessions of an Opium Eater Ricardo's book: and recurring to my own prophetic anticipation of the advent of some legislator for this science, I said, before I had finished the first chapter, "Thou art the man!" Wonder and curiosity were emotions that had long been dead in me. Yet I wondered once more: I wondered at myself that I could once again be stimulated to the effort of reading: and much more I wondered at the book. Had this profound work been really written in England during the nineteenth century? Was it possible? I supposed thinking had been extinct in England. Could it be that an Englishman, and he not in academic bowers, but oppressed by mercantile and senatorial cares, had accomplished what all the universities of Europe, and a century of thought, had failed even to advance by one hair's breadth? All other writers had been crushed and overlaid by the enormous weight of facts and documents; Mr. Ricardo had deduced, à priori , from the understanding itself, laws which first gave a ray of light into the unwieldy chaos of materials, and had constructed what had been but a collection of tentative discussions into a science of regular proportions, now first standing on an eternal basis.

At present there is no adequate edition of his works-a source of frustration to scholars of De Quincey and to those researching Coleridge and Wordsworth. De Quincey deeply influenced Edgar Allan Poe and numbers Dickens, Proust and Virginia Woolf among his many fans. This edition will include virtually all of De Quincey's published work plus the bulk of his unpublished manuscripts. Highlights include De Quincey on murder, Autobiographical Sketches , his 1803 Diary, writings on politics, economics, literary theory, and his contributions to the Edinburgh Saturday Post. Educated at Manchester Grammar School, he ran away, and wandered in Wales and London. He then spent a short time at Oxford, where he became addicted to opium. On a visit to Bath, he met Coleridge, and through him Southey and Wordsworth; and in 1809 went to live near them in Grasmere. There he set up as an author, largely writing magazine articles. His Confessions of an Opium-Eater appeared as a serial in 1821, and brought him instant fame. In 1828 he moved to Edinburgh, and for 20 years wrote for various magazines. ( Biography.com Author of:

His family soon found him and entered him (1803) in Worcester College, Oxford, where he developed a deep interest in German literature and philosophy. He left Oxford in 1808 without completing his degree and settled (1809) at Grasmere, where he made the acquaintance of Wordsworth. By 1817 the opium habit, which he had begun while at Oxford, had reached its height. He achieved literary eminence with the publication of his Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1822), which first appeared in the London Magazine in 1821. It is an account of the progress of his drug habit, including descriptions of the bizarre and spectacular dreams he had while under the influence of opium. He became a prolific contributor to various journals, especially to Blackwood's

His prose was as much musical as literary in its style and structure and anticipated such modern narrative techniques as stream-of-consciousness. De Quincey started to take opium to ease the pain of severe headaches at the age of 19, and became addicted to the drug for life. He described his addiction in his most famous work, Confessions of an English Opium Eater (1821). The work's biographical parts are important mainly as background for dreams De Quincey describes later. In these dreams he examined, with the help of opium, the intimate workings of the memory and the subconscious. His works include important essays on writers of his time, such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Charles Lamb. Source: World Book Encyclopaedia. I am editing three volumes of his Collected Works , and co-editing a fourth. Volume seven covers the years 1829-31. Volume eight includes his novel Klosterheim (1832). Volume nine, co-edited with Grevel Lindop, features The Household Wreck (1838). Volume sixteen includes The English Mail-Coach (1849). Contents of Volume Nine General Editors: Michael Eberle-Sinatra and Robert Morrison James Henry Leigh Hunt (1774-1859) was one of the most important and prolific essayists of the first half of the nineteenth century. A key member of the literary circle that included P. B. and Mary Shelley, John Keats, Charles Lamb, and William Hazlitt, Hunt was also a passionate and outspoken participant in the London political scene. This new edition will fill an major gap in Romantic studies by making available for the first time in a single edition all Hunts major works, fully annotated and with a consolidated index. The set will include all of Hunt's poetry, and an extensive selection of his periodical essays, many of which have never been reprinted.
