    Extractions: Albrecht was a painter, draughtsman, goldsmith, musician and a writer. He did 200 woodcuts and 100 line engravings. Albrecht was a designer and studied anatomy, mathematics, proportions, perspective and he completed a manual of geometry. He also designed the first flying machine. Durer was a graphic artist and made religious themes and altar pieces. He was one of the first to use tempera and oil glazes. Some of his great works are his Self-Portrait and Adam and Eve.

Dürer left his native city, then famous for its commerce, learning, and art, but three times in his life. His first journey was undertaken after he had completed his apprenticeships both to his father, a goldsmith, and to the painter and engraver Wohlgemut; on this occasion, he traveled through Germany and visited at Colmar and Basle the family of the recently deceased Schongaur; in 1505-07 he spent some time in Venice; in 1520-21 he went to the Netherlands, visiting especially Antwerp. After the earliest works of his youth (portraits, Madonnas, coats-of-arms, landscape-sketches) he set up in 1494 a studio of his own. In the same year he married Agnes Frey but they had no children. Among his Nuremberg friends the learned humanist Willibald Pirkheimer held the first place. Besides great advancement in learning, Dürer owed to Pirkheimer the happiness of a lifelong friendship and the acquaintance with classical Antiquity which he occasionally drew upon in his work. Dürer's art, however, with its sources in the German Middle Ages, remained essentially German; the influence of the art of Italy and the Netherlands was merely supplementary. In his own century there were few chances for mural paintings; but the demand for altar-pieces and portraits was all the greater. His woodcuts were eagerly sought after by the general public, his engravings on copper by connoisseurs. Among his fine compositions are: the Baumgartner altar-painting, the central panel of which represents the Adoration of the

Sono presenti leggere goffrature di stampa. Impressa su carta vergata con filigrana "Aquila con fiore" (Meder 122) databile intorno alla fine del XVI secolo. Questo foglio è d’estrema rarità come lo sono tutti quelli arrivati a noi dopo oltre quattro secoli in uno stato buono e completo. Dalla serie: La vita della vergine Rif. Bibliografici Monogrammata su matrice E’ Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) che dal 1486 lo vuole nella sua bottega contro la volontà paterna. Il padre, orafo, aveva l'intenzione di istradarlo al suo stesso mestiere. Sotto la guida di Wolgemut, il più rinomato xilografo di Norimberga, il giovane allievo in breve tempo acquisisce le fondamentali nozioni di tecnica incisoria e soprattutto entra in contatto con opere di altri maestri come quelle di Martin Schongauer (1453-1491) che esercite-ranno una influenza determinante nella sua formazione stilistica. Nel 1491 viene pubblicata la sua prima xilografia certa: San Gerolamo nello studio (per tutte le precedenti si possono solo azzardare attribuzioni)
