NEW ZIP CODE APPROVED FOR HOMER GLEN AREA CAUTION: MAIL AND PACKAGES USING THE NEW ZIP CODE PRIOR TO JULY 1, 2003 WILL BE UNDELIVERABLE A new zip code was officially approved last week by the United States Postal Service for Homer Glen and certain adjacent areas and will become active on July 1, 2003. At that time, postal databases will be updated to include all new zip codes approved in the U.S. Until July 1, 2003, the new zip code numbers will not be recognized by post office equipment and any mail using newly approved zip codes will be in limbo and not deliverable. The same applies other national and local databases that access the postal service zip code information, such as package delivery services. The U. S. Postal Service will notify residents of the new zip code number and their four digit block number by mail at an appropriate time. A period of about 18 months will be allowed for transitioning from the old zip code to the new one, so residents will have time to notify friends and businesses of their zip code change and to change stationery, checks, etc. At the present time no federal money is available for building a post office in Homer Glen, but the Village is looking at various ways to make some type of postal service available here in Homer Glen.

    Extractions: Weather Homer is a small, rural community located in southeastern Calhoun County at the junction of M-60 and M-99. It is situated on the Kalamazoo River, which includes a dam and mill pond just to the east of town. The picturesque downtown area contains several turn-of-the-century buildings and an old fieldstone library. A veterans’ memorial is located in the circle just west of the main street area. Homer was first settled by Milton Barney in 1832, who built a sawmill and a store, calling it Barneyville. In 1834 when a post office was registered, it was renamed Homer after the city in Courtland County, New York, at the request of many of the residents who had moved from there. It was incorporated as a village in 1871.

    Extractions: word for word (over 25,000 lines of poetry); it may be possible that the Homeric poems were memorized with more exactitude than scholars believe. No matter what the case, by the end of the Greek Dark Ages, these bards or story-tellers were probably the cultural center of Greek society; their status improved greatly as Greeks began to slowly urbanize. Homer , and that he sung ten epic poems about the Trojan War, of which only two survived (although the Greeks seem to have known them). As a group these poems told the entire history of the Trojan War; each poem, however, only covered a small part of that history. Many classicists believe that the two surviving Homeric epics (probably the only Homeric epics) were in fact composed by several individuals; in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, most classicists accept the overall Greek idea of a single author. Whatever the compositional history of the poems, they were set down into writing within a few decades of their composition; the growing urbanization of Greek society led to the rediscovery of writing (learned from the Phoenicians this time), and the Homeric poems were committed to writing very quickly. Time and transmission added much extraneous material to the poems, but in their basic character and outline they seem to be the original compositions.

We now are made up of Triumph Hose Co. No. 1, Tioughnioga Hose Co. No. 2, West Side Hose Co. No. 3, and the Homer Hook and Ladder Co. Each of these companies has their own Captain and Lieutenant, and administrative officers, and has a membership limit of 30 firefighters. The department is very active in terms of the number of alarms we handle. For the year 1999-2000 we ran 686 fire and ems alarms. Our district is about 125 square miles, and we cover about 13,000 population. This district is made up of the Village of Homer, the Town of Homer, Town of Scott, Town of Summerhill, and the north west portion Town of Cortlandville. The department operates from one station situated in the Village of Homer.
