    Extractions: Founded by Isaac Kaufmann Funk, a Lutheran minister who in 1876 began editing and publishing tow magazines, the Homiletic Review and the Voice, the latter for the Prohibition Party. Unfortunately, neither magazine paid its way. The following year he teamed with A.W. Wagnalls, a lawyer and accountant, who got Funk on sounder financial footing. They began by publishing pamphlets and booklets for the clergy, mostly commentaries on the Bible. For more general audiences, they issued a reprint of Spurgeon's The Treasury of David, in seven volumes, issued by subscripiton one at a time for $1.00 each. The success of this led to the more ambitious 27 volume set of Dr. Joseph Parker's People's Bible, also sold by subscription one at a time. This in turn led to the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge by Schaff-Herzogg. The big break for the two men came in 1884 when Funk, watching the explosion of the so-called Second Paperback Revolution, thought there might be a market for religious paperbacks. he issued the "Standard Series", quarto-sized soft bound books.

A long and tedious trip, but by no means uninteresting to me, a girl of twenty, with no cares. October 22 we landed on Mound Prairie, near Tenino, Thurston county, with but two neighbors within ten miles. We moved out of our wagons into a bachelor's house of one room for ten of us. We partitioned it off with wagon canvas and tents, into different apartments. We lived there until February, 1854, when the folks moved into a log house of their own. I shall never forget the first party I attended in Washington. It was during the holidays of '54 if I remember right. There were six besides the host and hostess. The supper consisted of beans, ginger-bread and coffee, eaten in a little side kitchen without any floor. Our host and hostess of that evening are now living in Portland, Ore., and are very wealthy society people. They told me if I would get married I would get three hundred and sixty acres of land, so of course I got married and got my three hundred and sixty acres of land. Wheat was $5 a bushel and everything else in proportion, but we never went hungry. In the spring of '54 we went up to Olympia to help lay the corner-stone of the Masonic hall. There we first met GEORGE BARNES, ELWOOD EVANS, GIDDINGS, CHARLES WILLIAMS, SYLVESTER, all the MASONS. We were all entertained at COLONEL COX's hotel. You could not see the town for the stumps; they seemed to be bigger than the houses.

    Extractions: Arrow indicates the location of the Henson Cemetery on Georgia Ridge Allen Powell will be remembered. Allen Powell was born on or about January 23, 1822, probably in Pickens County, South Carolina . By 1841 Allen was in Forsyth County, Georgia as he shows up on church records in that year. He married twice, first to Satirah Garrett on April 2, 1842, and second to Ester Bennett on January 25, 1847. Satirah was the daughter of Daniel Garrett and Ester's parents were Henry Bennett and Sarah Padgett . Both marriages are recorded in Marriage Book A of Forsyth County, GA. Allen shows up in the 1850 Cherokee County, Ga census on page 226 , and then on the 1860 Gordon County, GA census on page #304. Allen is on the 1870 Gordon County, GA census , but the next year he shows up on land records in the area of Crawford County, Arkansas known as Georgia Ridge. Five years after his arrival in Arkansas, Allen was murdered, and was buried in the Henson Cemetery in Georgia Ridge northwest of the present town of Mulberry, AR. Images of newspaper clippings about Allen's death Images of Allen's headstone The first time I visited Henson Cemetery it was well on it's way to being reclaimed by the forest(see the photo at the top of this page). At some point the cemetery was cleaned up, and stones were set upright. I haven't been able to find out who is responsible for all the work done at the cemetery, but they have my gratitude.

    Extractions: A second clue to the English origin of the Parker brothers may be found in their close association with, and apparent kinship to, the family of the immigrant Edward1 Converse of Charlestown and Woburn, MA. In 1659, Edward1 Converse made his will leaving 40 shilings to his "kinsman," John Parker, who was to be one of the overseers. As Mary Walton Ferris rightly noted, two subsequent facts tighten the apparent bond between these families: (a) Josiah2 Converse (Edward1) assisted Jacob1 Parker in the administration of the estate of Jacob's brother, John1 Parker; and (b) in 1672, after the deathof Jacob1 Parker, James2 Converse (brother of Josiah) joined the widow Sarah Parker and her brother-in-law, James1 Parker of Groton, MA in petitioning the court for a division of the property left by Jacob1 Parker. In the Register article published in 1992, Arnold P.G. and Carolyn Bryant Peterson suggested that the immigrant Edward Converse was probably the man of that name baptized at Navestock, Essex, England, 23 March 1588/9, son of Allen Converse of Navestock and his first wife, Joanna. The baptismal date of Edward1 Converse of Navestock agrees with his deposition given 10 March 1661/2 when he gave his age as then about 73 years. Edward Converse married at Great Burstead, Essex (ENG) on 29 June 1614 his first wife, Sarah Parker, and they resided at South Weald, Essex, where they had the baptisms of three children recorded between 1618 and 1623.
