In 1887 she was put under the charge of Anne Sullivan (see Macy, Anne Sullivan ), who was her teacher and companion. She lectured all over America and in Europe and Asia, raising funds for the training of the blind and promoting other social causes. She overcame these disabilities with the assistance of a devoted teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen how to read and write in Braille. She would later learn to speak in a primitive fashion. After graduation from Radcliffe College in 1904, Keller devoted herself to a range of social causes. Between 1909 and 1924, she was active in the radical politics of the Socialist Party and the Industrial Workers of the World. She also campaigned against U.S. entry into World War I and in favor of women's suffrage. Beginning in 1924, however, Keller was an articulate spokesman for the American Foundation for the Blind and a national symbol of personal courage in the face of adversity. Her many books and William Gibson's popular play, The Miracle Worker helped to convince the American people that physical limitations need not compromise a person's intellectual potential.

At nineteen months, Helen was stricken with a deadly fever that almost took her life, however it only left the distant memories of light and sounds. She learned how to do small chores around the house by following her mother and feeling her hands. She recognized people by touching the characteristics of their faces and clothes. When in the garden, she could tell where she was by the smell of the flowers around her and the feel of the earth under her feet. (RNIB 2001) She, also, devised her own signs to communicate with her family her needs and wants. She was very intelligent and sensitive. However, she was frustrated easily because of her inability to communicate, and this caused behavior problems. (RNIB 2000) Anne Sullivan came into her life at age seven. Anne came from the Perkins School for the Blind and was hired as a private tutor for Helen. Anne came from an impoverished background. She, too, lost her vision at a young age, five years old. However, after two successful surgeries Anne was able to see again. Her determination and patients overcame Helen's disobedience and wild tantrums. She knew that in order for Helen to learn she would have to gain control of the child's misbehavior. She, also, knew that Helen would become a different person after she learned to how communicate. The daughter of Captain Arthur Henley Keller and Kate Adams Keller she was born with full sight and hearing. Kate Keller was a tall, statuesque blond with blue eyes. She was some twenty years younger than her husband Captain Keller, a loyal southerner who had proudly served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The house they lived in was a simple, white, clapboard house built in 1820 by Helen's grandparents. At the time of Helen's birth the family were far from wealthy with Captain Keller earning a living as both a cotton plantation owner and the editor of a weekly local newspaper, the "North Alabamian". Helen's mother, as well as working on the plantation, would save money by making her own butter, lard, bacon and ham. Helen falls ill But Helen's life was to change dramatically. In February 1882, when Helen was nineteen months old, she fell ill. To this day the nature of her ailment remains a mystery. The doctors of the time called it "brain fever", whilst modern day doctors think it may have been scarlet fever or meningitis.

Helen lost her hearing and sight at 19 months of age, but she had learned the meaning of the word "water," and her vision had been excellent. As she grew up, she managed to learn to do tiny errands, but also realized that she was missing something. Keller was sent to a state school for the blind, but failed first grade because she could not read braille. At the age of fourteen she was physically more developed than most of the girls of her age. For medical and cosmetic reasons, her eyes were removed and replaced with glass ones.
