After the publication of The Man From Snowy River and Other Verses in 1895, he became something of a literary celebrity in Australia. Paterson is best remembered as the author of Waltzing Matilda - Australia's unofficial national anthem. A film was made of his poem, The Man From Snowy River. Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) Henry Lawson was born on the goldfields in New South Wales on 17 June, 1867, the son of a Norwegian seaman and an activist for women's rights. Lawson suffered from deafness and was often teased as a result. He led a troubled life but is one of Australias best-known and loved early writers. There are many collections of his poems and short stories. Henry Handel Richardson (1870 1946) Henry Handel Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson. She was born in Melbourne, Victoria where she attended Presbyterian Ladies College between the ages of 13 and 17. This experience was the basis for her novel The Getting of Wisdom (***). There is an excellent film of this book.
