Milton's powerful, rhetoric prose and the eloquence of his poetry had an immense influence especially on the 18th-century verse. Besides poems, Milton published pamphlets defending civil and religious rights. "Of Man's first disobedience, and the fruit (from Paradise Lost John Milton was born in London. His mother Sarah Jeffrey was the daughter of a merchant sailor, and his father had risen to prosperity as a scrivener or law writer - he also composed music. The family was wealthy enough to afford a second house in the country. Milton was educated at St Paul's School and then at Christ's College, Cambridge (1625-32), where he was called, half in scorn, "The Lady of Christ's." During his Cambridge period, while considering himself destined for the ministry, he began to write poetry in Latin, Italian, and English. He was expelled for a term after starting a fist fight with his tutor. On leaving Cambridge Milton had given up his original plan to become a priest. He adopted no profession but spent six years at leisure in his father's home, writing during that time L'ALLEGRO, IL PENSEROSO (1632), COMUS (1634), and LYCIDAS (1637). In 1635 the Miltons moved to Horton, Buckinghamshire, where John pursued his studies in Greek, Latin, and Italian. He traveled in France and Italy in the late 1630s, meeting in Paris the jurist and theologian Hugo Grotius and the astronomer Galileo Galilei in Florence - there are references to Galileo's telescope in

A famous writer and poet, he visited Italy between 1638 and 1639. It was in 1638 that he would perhaps have met Galileo , a meeting represented in an picture which is the work of Annibale Gatti. Milton was the author of the poem Paradise Lost (1667). He was also an ardent polemicist, a follower of Cromwell, and the latter's foreign language secretary. In 1652 he became completely blind.     Extractions: An English poet, Milton's early works include the pastoral poems L'allegro and Il penseroso (1632), the masque Comus (written in 1633 in collaboration with the musician Henry Lawes), and the elegy Lycidas (1637). Among his latter works are Paradise Lost Paradise Regained (1677), and the classic drama Samson Agonistes (1677). Milton's first published poem was "On Shakespeare," an epitaph printed in the Second Folio (1632) of Shakespeare's plays. Born in London in 1608, his "niceness of nature" and "honest haughtiness," as well as his flowing locks, earned him the nickname "the lady of Christ's" at Christ's College, Cambridge when he attended there. His middle years were devoted to the Puritan Cause and pamphleteering, including one advocating divorce and another advocating freedom of the press. He was (Latin) secretary in 1649 to Oliver Cromwell. Although he supported the execution of King Charles in 1649, he was saved from any danger of the loss of his life with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. He married three times, had three daughters, and was able to live out his last years writing poetry, despite the blindness which had overtaken him completely by 1652. On His Blindness
