Extractions: Wesleyan Methodist Church (4) The Wesleyan Methodist Church (4) was built in 1857 on the north side of Mount Albert Road, between Centre and Alice Streets. It was the second church built in the village. The burial ground was just north of the Church. Many of the early pioneers of the area were buried there. In 1950, the Horticultural Society cleaned up the site and placed the headstones from this burial ground and the burial ground beside the South School across the street in a cement wall at the back of the grounds. In 1954, a monument was erected to honour the pioneers. The first trustees of the Church were Thomas Rear and John Allison. In 1870, the Church was on the same circuit as the churches at Eastville (Holt), Boaks, Rayners, Mount Zion, Sharon, Ebenezer, Wesley and Mount Pleasant. In the early days, local preachers assisted the ministers. Local preachers were men in the parish who could preach the gospel. These men had to have a license to preach. Each year, to renew his license, the local preacher presented himself before the Church Board and proved that he was worthy of the position.

Extractions: Taken from "Pottawattamie County, Iowa: A Collection of Historical Sketches and Family Histories, 1978 The Glendale Church was founded in humble beginnings in the hearts of a few who first met in a little brick school which sat at the site where the Schumacher home is today at the corner of Perry and Birdsley roads, and there are a few who remember its beginning and speak of it. The area was called Garner Center. Within a short time the meetings were moved to the Grange Hall, a community building which sat across the main road and Mosquito Creek to the south, the road was called the River to River Road and the year was 1895. The road has since been paved, called first Highway No. 7, later No. 64, and today the name No. 191 North. The hall was used for elections and dances were held there, and now a little band of believers used it for worship. The ministers who served them were sometimes laymen, also Rev. Rhyles and Rev. Alexander and a Sunday school superintendent Johnny Sylvester. One pastor's pay for riding his bicycle from town on Sunday afternoon was fifty cents for his sermon. Others joined the little band and a Presbyterian Church of the USA was organized at Garner Center, Pottawattamie County, Iowa and wrote its first official record Dec. 17, 1905. Those officially responsible for its organization were Rev. Harvey Hostetler, Rev. S. R, Ferguson, and Mr. Norton Dorland from the First and Grace Churches in Council Bluffs.

Extractions: Our Local Church History Over all, thirty pastors have served the Presbyterian Church. The most recent, Rev. Darin Bentzinger, makes thirty one. Two former pastors, Reverend Tinkham and Reverend Nelson, came from Ireland. The others came from all over the country. Youth Groups This church has a rich history of active youth ministry and activity. Each summer, youths are able to attend summer camp at Westminster Woods, South of Lexington, NE. In the past two years, we have had youth take part in the Westminster Woods Mission trip (last year they went to Southern Colorado) and in the Sports Camp (directed by Rev. Bentzinger). During the school months, the youth from the Presbyterian and United Methodist Churches combine to form the United Youth Fellowship. Together they meet twice a month for study and fun. Each year they try to do at least one fund raiser, a community service activity, and either a mission or ski trip. This group numbers approximately 20-25 youth. They also handle the Easter Sunrise Service each year. This year (1998) we will be sending three youth to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, an event sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA) where 6,000+ Presbyterian youth meet at Purdue University for a week of learning and fun.

Extractions: The first Presbyterian Church was organized April 30, 1880 and was called Little Salt Church because it stood near the Little Salt Creek three miles east of Raymond. Neither the town of Raymond nor the railroad were in existence at that time. Two years later on October 22, 1882, the congregation erected a new building in Raymond with the total cost of building and furnishings amounting to $2,000. After an urgent plea from the Rev. E.M. Lewis, the congregation provided the balance and church was dedicated and presented, debt free, to the Almighty God. The building was located on out Lot No. 1, which is now known as 2nd and High Streets. Later, the congregation bought three lots and moved the building to the location now known as 3rd and Clark Street. When the building was moved it was enlarged and improved, the cornerstone being laid November 9, 1907. The church was dedicated, free from debt, September 20, 1908. Twenty-four years after the founding of the church, a fine two-story seven room manse was built. It was finished in April, 1904, and, has always had the policy of the congregation to use the pay-as-you-go plan. The manse was also debt free. In October, 1922, work was begun to rebuild the foundation, enlarge the basement and add an annex to the west side of the church. Art glass windows were also attached. Since all the labor on this improvement was donated by members and friends, the congregation saved approximately $1,600. The project was completed by the spring of 1923.

Extractions: Trinity Methodist Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church were both established in Estevan about the same time 1892. Being no church to go to, services were first held in homes and then in the original part of the stone school, called Central School. (This school was where the Post Office is now) During 1902 and 03 the two church buildings were erected, on opposite sides of 3rd and 12th Ave. In both churches, during the years that followed, a worthy succession of Ministers came and went. The congregation knew days of encouragement and seasons of difficulty but, by and large, the story of those days is one of growth in numbers and in influence. Through the dark days of World War I the records show many from these congregations serving in the armed forces. When the war was over plans were carried out to welcome the men home. The memory of those who did not return was honored in the beautiful stained glass window in the south of the sanctuary of the present church, unveiled and dedicated in 1925.

This hardly reads like a description of the Hyde Park Presbyterian church, yet the above lines were written many years ago by a former superintendent of the Sabbath School, Mr. James P. Root. The old church stood in a grove of oak trees at the corner of Oak Street and Hyde Park Avenue. It was a quaint little building with a V-shaped roof. The double doors opened upon a center aisle flanked on either side by hard wooden benches. Halfway down on one side was a short bench seating but two, the organist and choirmaster, and in the space thus made were the little melodeon and the big wood stove that smoked sadly when the wind blew from the east.

Extractions: Presbyterian Church of Oronoco Grace Lutheran Church - Wisconsin Synod Top The early beginning, which led to the founding of this congregation is, lost to our generation, but apparently a group of German imigrants that homsteaded the area along the south branch of the Zumbro River, now known as "White Bridge" in the mid 1800's. Reverend William Lange is the first known pastor to serve these settlers along with St. Peters church in Pine Island, MN. Pastor Lange turned this congregation of settlers over to Pastor Schaaf of the Missouri Synod. They formed St. John's Lutheran Church on January 11, 1879 and worshiped in the "Coon Grove School". The St John's congregation continued to meet at the Coon Grove School until the building became too small for worship (in about 1908), so they moved temporarily to the Presbyterian Church in Oronoco and held Sunday afternoon services. On February 25, 1908, a meeting was held where it was decided to erect a new church building of their own in Oronoco. This new building served the congregation well and continued with various improvements. On February 12, 1941 a special joint meeting of St Paul and St John's congregations was held with the purpose of reuniting the two congregation. With Pastor Lenz representing St Paul and Pastor Koch representing St John's, they decided to reunite. The combined congregation chose "Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church" as the new name (it's entire budget in the early years was about $3300.00 per year.). After the two churches joined, St Paul's building was used for fellowship and St John's (Grace Lutheran) for Worship and Education.
