I wondered what was Moby Dick's total vocabulary and how it compared to other works. Thanks to the Project Guttenberg , an online resource for literature, (and copious spare-time) I was able to download a considerable sample of works and perform a word analysis. The following are the results from this informal study including relative vocabulary densities and anomalous word usage. Please sign my guestbook if you find this interesting or helpful. Thanks, Zack The works represented in this study come exclusively from the Project Guttenberg (PG). While most PG works are included, the sample is not complete; some works have been eliminated for obvious reasons (e.g. Pi to 10,000 digits) while others works were eliminated because they were malformed or unavailable. Some books in the Project Guttenberg are split into several seperate volumes or alternatively several works are combined into one; this may effect the sample slightly, especially the Anomalous Word Charts . In some cases, I have manually combined multiple volumes into one for logical consistency.

    Extractions: Little is known about Francis Rabelais but that he lived between 1495 and 1553, and that he was a cultured scholar and one of a the important early writers of the Renaissance. His stories of Gargantua and Pantagruel are among the finest examples of outrageous ribald humor ever written. The fact that these stories were written at such an early date makes them very special. It has been said that if we did not actually have these writings of Francis Rabelais, that we would imagine them to be impossible. Certainly there has never been a finer example of bawdy and scatalogical prose presented in such a humorous and delightful fashion. Consider the whimsical imagination and quaint language before you and it is clear to all but a few prudish snobs that Rabelais stands with Shakespear as one of history's most interesting writers. I am adding here some wonderful illustrations from a 1932 publication to round out this rare and much maligned literary masterpiece.

Rabelais was born in Chinon, Touraine. After studies at Franciscan and Benedictine houses and at various universities, Rabelais went to Lyon, where he practiced medicine, wrote and published. He began his literary career by writing a series satirical almanacs. One of these became the basis for the book that would be regarded as his masterpiece. Pantagruel (1532), Rabelais's first great work, is the life story of a young giant of great strength and appetites. In 1534 Rabelais published The Very Frightful Life of the Grand Gargantua , the story of Pantagruel's father. Both books, printed under the pseudonym Alcofribas Nasier, were successful. The two books were read to King Francis I, who was so pleased with them that he granted a license for the publication of the third, Tiers Livre , which appeared in 1546.
