Extractions: By G. Harvey Ralphson On Guard with Uncle Sam, or Boy Scouts Adventure Books of the 1910s By Jim Zwick I nspired by the Boy Scout movement founded in Great Britain in 1908 by Robert S. S. Baden-Powell, the Boy Scouts of America was formed in 1910 through the merging of Ernest Thompson Seton's Woodcraft Indians and the Society of the Sons of Daniel Boone, later the Boy Pioneers, founded by Daniel Carter Beard. By the time the first official Boy Scout Handbook was published in 1911, adventure books were already appearing that featured Boy Scouts assisting the U.S. government to put down rebellions and threats of war in U.S. colonies and other trouble spots around the world. During the Scouting movement's first decade, adventure books took the Scouts from Mexico and Panama to the Philippines and Japan, and later to the battle fields of Europe during World War I. From its start, the international Scouting movement maintained an uneasy balance between those who admired and those who opposed the military and imperialism. A lieutenant general in the British military at the time he formed the Boy Scouts, Baden-Powell was inspired to create the movement after observing the use of boys as scouts and messengers during the Anglo-Boer War in South Africa. The first leaders of the movement in the United States were authors and illustrators, and were interested in conservation and outdoor recreation, not the military. Dan Beard was a radical reformer affiliated with the single tax movement inspired by Henry George's 1879 book
