    Extractions: Wenn man das Leben Napoléons studiert und dafür die persönlichen Erinnerungen seiner engsten Vertrauten heranzieht, da man sich von diesen Berichten eine unbedingte Authentizität erhofft, so wird man von den berühmten Memoiren seines Ersten Kammerdieners Louis Constant Wairy (1778–1845) nicht unbedingt enttäuscht. Dieser Sohn eines wallonischen Gastwirts, der im Alter von zweiundzwanzig Jahren durch Vermittlung von Joséphine Bonaparte, (er war bis dahin als Diener bei Eugène de Beauharnais tätig gewesen) die Bekanntschaft des Ersten Konsuls machte, sollte Napoléon von diesem Augenblick an als sein Schatten bis zum April des Jahres 1814 begleiten. Seine Memoiren über diese Zeit schrieb Constant erst viele Jahre später, was vermuten lässt, dass die Angaben unpräzise sind und die schon verblassten Erinnerungen kräftig koloriert wurden. Nichtsdestotrotz liest sich sein Buch spannend und sehr unterhaltend, die vielen Anekdoten sind genau das, was man zu lesen wünscht. Zwar spricht Constant mit einer gewissen Verehrung von seinem ehemaligen Herrn, doch fühlt man einen verhaltenen Grimm, eine Disharmonie hinter seiner Charakterisierung. Er achtete seinen Patron , ohne ihn jedoch zu lieben. Und es scheint, als hätte er auch allen Grund seinen Herrn nicht zu lieben, denn es war nicht immer ein angenehmes Dasein, als
