Typical Alger
Alger writes another formulaic story of Herbert -- a sixteen-year-old boy who lives in the country with his widowed mother.Together, they run the post office in the late 1800's.However, their position is taken over byGraham, the local rich man who wants the office to further hiswealth.

Herbert, fearing poverty, works for Graham and his snobby son,who pay Herbert a pittance.However, Herbert, does meet a scholar who istraveling for his health named Melville.Melville, who is rich, is takenwith Herbert and hires him to be his secretary and friend.These wages arebetter than Graham's.Together, the two go to Boston and eventually headwest to Chicago and Colorado.In Colorado they have several westernadventures involving bandits and wooly hunters.Herbert, throughinvesting, comes into a small fortune for himself and is able to reverse heand his mother's misfortunes.

Alger writes in a clear, friendly style. In this book he emphasizes hard work, avoidance of all forms of tobacco,honesty, and gambling.The tale had more meat than many others of his andwas enjoyable.It had violence in it, but as usual, Alger handles it in astyle that has been lost in today's entertainment. ... Another luck and pluck story

This is a fairly classic Horatio Alger setting.Hector's father has died. Hector's uncle shows some evidence that Hector was adopted and thus not entitled to inherit the estate.

The uncle sends Hector off to a school.The owner of the school is a real jerk.The owner's nephew, Jim, is a bully.Hector puts the bully in his place; there are a couple fights.Jim frames Hector for stealing.Hector's friends are able to show that the bully was the thief.Once his name is cleared, Hector leaves the school.

Hector travels to New York City and stays with a friend.He rescues a young girl from a speeding carriage (I wonder how many times this happens in an Alger book.)Hector is sent to California on a mission for a friend of his, and along the way he is able to get proof that he was his father's son, and the Uncle has to give up the estate.

This is a fairly pleasant, average Horatio Alger story.If you've enjoyed other Alger stories, you'll enjoy this one.If the Alger stories are new to you, this is a good one to start with.

He was the son of a clergyman; was graduated at Harvard College in 1852, and at its Divinity School in 1860; and was pastor of the Unitarian Church at Brewster, Mass., in 1862-66.
