Editorial Review

Book Description
'This is not a lighthearted book, but rather an inspiring tale that challenges the development of copyright. A detailed historical analysis of copyright leads to fundamental questions about the role of copyright in society. From a historical perspective a tale of failure blamed on commodification surfaces, but the book also offers perspectives on the future, i.e. a future with or without copyright as we know it. Maybe after all there will be a fairy tale ending for the reader.' - Paul Torremans, University of Nottingham, UK

'Once the preserve of a few legal specialists, the wider implications of copyright law are more and more the concern of literary scholars and cultural analysts as well as of increasingly sceptical lawyers. Helle Porsdam is to be congratulated on assembling and editing this interesting collection of essays, which rightly opens up even further the debate on the cultural role of copyright law, one in which every one of us should participate.' - Ruth Towse, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands

The present state of copyright law and the way in which it threatens the remix of culture and creativity is a shared concern of the contributors to this unique book. Whether or not to remain within the underlying regime of intellectual property law, and what sort of reforms are needed if we do decide to remain within this regime, are fundamental questions that form the subtext for their discussions.

One opinion that manifests itself in the book is that we should not reject present copyright law altogether, but rather find ways to fit it to the new digital technology, whilst others take a more sceptical view. They argue, for example, that the solution to copyright-related problems is simply to give up on copyright law altogether. The life and work of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen presents an ideal focus and/or point of departure, giving the contributors a historical and well defined framework for their discussion of the various problems in relating copyright to cultural creativity.

Copyright and Other Fairy Tales will be of great interest to scholars of intellectual property from a diversity of fields including law, economics, and cultural studies, as well as historians interested in the link between cultural creativity and the role of copyright in promoting (or preventing) such creativity. ... Book Description
Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish storyteller whose fairy tales are known all over the world, was also a gifted artist. He made hundreds, perhaps thousands, of paper cuttings of swans, clowns, toy theaters, windmills, angels, and other whimsical images. Often he made the paper cuttings while telling a story, then gave them to the children listening to him.In this inspired biography, Beth Wagner Brust tells the story of Andersen as an artist who used his many talents to escape the poverty into which he was born and who entertained others with not only his famous stories but also his innovative and original art. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Story
As a storyteller I love to tell stories by Hans Christian Anderson and was thrilled to find out he was an accomplished cutter of paper. While his paper cuttings are much more intricate than the ones I do when I tell stories, the author helped me to understand that his ability to tell stories while cutting paper is a good way to keep the attention of small children. I found that "Grandma's Magic Scissors" by Linda S. Day was a good book to learn basic paper cutting skills and hope that someday I can learn to cut the intricate designs that this master storyteller cut, although I think I will carry my scissors in a bag and not my boot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delight for All Ages
I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan.I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work.Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Real Treasure
Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.

The book's a treasure in that I feel like I've discovered gold within. Not simply a children's book, it's so well written and full of surprises, I think it will appeal to readers of all ages, from the casually curious child or adult to the Andersen enthusiast like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Not only is the author great (I know her!) but this book explores an interesting topic. Those paper cuttings are unreal! I mean they are real, but they are so amazing! ... Read more

Book Description
The further adventures of a feline philosopher and friend. Could it be? Hans Christian Andersen - who wrote so lovingly of inchworms and ugly ducklings - an unrepentant despiser of cats? That's the rumor that the philosophical feline, Thomas Gray, and her (yes, her) cohort, Cambridge don Lucas Fysst, are determined to snuff out. In Copenhagen to attend a philosophers' convention, they go on the hunt for a missing Andersen manuscript that will set the record straight. A sequel to the popular Thomas Gray, Philosopher Cat, Philip J. Davis' latest is a whimsically written and illustrated tale - part history, part parody, and all fun. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tracing the cat in Copenhagen....
I found this a very charming book. The mild scholar Lucas Fysst goes on a researchtrip to Copenhagen and is joined by his companion, the philosopher cat, Thomas Grey. Together they explore various libraries and archives in order to unearth a story by H C Andersen dealing positively with cats.

The local colour is very good, I know as I happen to live in Copenhagen! And as I work at the Royal Library I find the descriptions of the house and its personel very amusing - and quite accurate...

The author mixes fact, fiction and detective story elements in an entertaining way, he is a very witty and learned person who spices his concoction with bemused commentaries on this science and that philosopher... The illustrations are absolutely congenial and as a whole it is a very good-looking volume.

I'd like to warmly recommend this book to anyone who is fond of cats, H C Andersen, Copenhagen and philosophising! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This is the largest selection of Hans Christian Andersen's visual art ever to have been presented in one book. Without having had any knowledge of Andersen's visual art, van Gogh was convinced that only a visual artist could write the way Andersen did. In a warm, precise style, Heltoft emphasizes the connection between Andersen's writing and his visual art, and presents the book's wealth of illustrative material in an entirely original way within a framework of excerpts from Andersen's works, correspondence and diary entries.

We cannot help being moved by the originality and charm of Andersen's visual art, but not until modernism's expansion of the concept of art have we come to understand the values in his naivistic drawings, surrealistic collages and subtly executed paper cuts. They are all based on a pronounced ability to observe and an uncompromising artistic instinct.

By means of modern reproduction techniques, the drawings in this book have been restored to their original graphic beauty, and the festive coloring of the paper cuts has been re-created. New material has been added, and works that have been lost have now been reproduced from the author's archives and in this way serve to make the book additionally interesting. It represents the best starting-point for an appreciation of Andersen's gifts as a visual artist. ... Read more

Book Description

Hans Christian Anderson was born in the slums of Odense, Denmark. His parents were hardworking, and Hans received little formal education, but his childhood was his opening to the world of folklore and fairy tales. Much of his work depicts characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts and many of his childhood experiences inspired his most famous tales, such as The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid. In this intimate and gripping biography of one of the world's greatest storytellers, Karen Hesse and acclaimed artist Erik Blegvad connect Hans's own experiences

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly researched account
In Ugly Ducklings?: Studies In The English Translations Of Hans Christian Andersen's Tales And Stories, Viggo Pedersen carefully studies the major English translations of Hans Christian Andersen's timeless stories, and of the people who created the translations. Working from the assumption that the personality and background of the translator, as well as the literary climate of the day, strongly affected the translations themselves, Ugly Duckings? superbly demonstrates how different English translations have affected one another - especially given that many were made with little or no reference to the original Danish text. A thoroughly researched account that covers the efforts of virtually every well-known translator of Andersen's work from 1846-1907, contemporary translations, and common translation problems such as pragmatics, syntax, vocabulary, and phraseology, Ugly Ducklings? is a superb and thoughtful contribution to linguistics and literature shelves, as well as a "must-read" for any interested in up-close study and literary analysis of Andersen's classics.
