Gentleman rogue

He was London's most eligible -- and outrageous -- bachelor. But though Pierre Standish didn't give a whit for polite society, he could not deny his father's latest request. To prove himself a true gentleman, Pierre had to perform a random good deed. The task proved unimaginatively easy when, en route to London, Pierre came upon a damsel lying in the road. Her clothes bespoke her an urchin, but although his anonymous Miss Addams had lost her memory, Pierre was certain she was a well-bred lady. A lady whose innocence and plight might just ensnare the ton's most unattainable rogue. ... Read more

Book Description

The remarkable memoir of an Iraqi woman who escaped from captivity in Baghdad and became America's leading undercover counter-terrorist expert.

Here is the story of an anonymous counter-terrorism expert, a young woman, who, in disguise, has penetrated front groups of anti-American terrorist organizations operating in this country. In this edge-of-the-seat memoir, she chronicles her escape from Iraq via Iran to Israel, following a great tragedy that befell her family at the hands of Saddam Hussein. She also details how she became involved in intelligence gathering for the United States, her adoptive country, while working for an antiterrorism group. With her unique insights into how terrorist groups veil their true operations by various means, she was able to infiltrate and identify dangerous terrorist organizations and entities working undetected in the United States.

Terrorist Hunter provides fascinating and shocking information on how federal agencies, chiefly the FBI and the State Depart-ment, repeatedly ignored or mishandled important information she provided. She reveals her role in exposing terrorist supporters who the White House considered to be friends, in preventing the government from funding terrorist activities, and in the deportation of terrorists and their supporters. She also reveals how she discovered a billion-dollar scheme that rich Saudi Arabians set up to filter money to terrorist groups, through charities and businesses in the United States -- information that the FBI sat on for years, until after 9-11.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read!
It is a good book. I love the way it is written, it may not be consistent from line to line, and may have some difficulties in readying it due to massive information but it compensate with a good thrilling read, a lot of emotion and opinions which worth thinking of.
You may want to look for further information than settle on this book for a source on the entire terrorist concept, but it is a good start and I find most of it to be pretty genuine. The method this book portrays is too realistic; as it happen to be that terrorist fund-raising cells operate very similar to what this book portrays.
Unfortunately this book writer's not revealed and it cost in credibility. But as far as content - it has a very good hold on realistic and real-life happens.

I heartily recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrorist Hunter
I took on course on terrorism and this was one of the 13 books we read. I would say this in easily in the top 3. It's a great read and even if you're not specifically looking to research terrorism it is fun to read. Page turner is definitely one of the best words for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars TWO POSSIBILITIES
I am torn between two possible versions of the story a) that it is an accurate rendition of the facts of one woman's activities ( perhaps with some significant "assistance" from those with an interest in her work) or b) the story is a composite of results of the work of a number of people and perhaps some offshore intelligence agencies. Given either of these two alternatives, my guess is that much of the factual content of the hunt is correct.

Only years later are Americans seeing video of the exhortations to violence that seem to be a part of the activities at many of the mosques. We have also seen the results of their activities in the US from the fund raising to the initial attack on the wtc to threats exposed subsequent to 9-11.

Other reviewers have proposed that the lack of convictions proves the information to be flawed. Such assertions do not reflect the extreme difficulty of prosecuting cases under US law where there is an ongoing need to investigate other and threat to those who participate in the investigation as sources. The amount of information required to be provided to criminal defendants compromises not only the content of current investigations but also and more importantly compromises sources, capabilities and methods. The problem with defense attorneys serving as the communications link between captured terrorists and those still free poses a huge threat.

What is disturbing about the book is the vast quantity of information available in the public domain or by walk-in which could have greatly assisted in the prevention of the attacks of 9-11. It is important to acknowledge that the FBI had been severely criticized for their prior investigation of religious organizations. Thus, the politically correct FBI of the 90's was hesitant to pursue many leads. As IC Smith details in his book Inside, the story of a career FBI agent, the agency suffered from a lack of principled, mission focused leadership during the lead up to 9-11. The DOJ supported not only the continued employment of a top FBI administrator (who had lied about events surrounding the Ruby Ridge rules of engagement but also destroyed evidence) but also his promotion. The very preventable disaster of 9-11 was affected by decades of mistakes in many agencies but none more critical than those resulting from the leadership cancer at FBI headquarters, where personal advancement was placed ahead of leadership and integrity.

Like so many other books on most any subject, this should not be taken as the single answer but rather a very valuable contribution of the knowledge base on the subject of terrorism.

Highly recommended.

Fours years after its initial publication, I don't personally know of any AA member who still uses this as a daily reflection. I think AAWS just wanted to see if they could generate revenue by competing with the Hazelden 24 Hour A Day book. However, this turned out to be a weak effort.

3-0 out of 5 stars 1991 -- was this risquý then?
Alyson Publications primarily prints gay and lesbian fiction and non-fiction.So when I friend recently gave me his copy, I thought the book would be far more erotic and explicit than it is. In fact, compared to other Alyson books of this same period it was disappointing in that area.I'm assuming the target audience are people who read "Somewhere in the Night" by McMahan, a collection of short stories where the main vampiric character of this novel is introduced.I assume this because the novel just jumped into things with little background or character build-up; sadly resulting is little empathy for Andrew unless you've read the short stories. The plot is very complex -- 12-step program for vampires attacking its own kind, perhaps an attempt to kill homosexual vampires by it, an insane vampire hunter, romantic attractions, and the rather sudden addition of a child vampire at one point. It does all connect together at the end but it takes some effort to work through to that ending.

1-0 out of 5 stars author's purpose??
I was extremely disapointed in this book. The author's sole purpose for writing this novel appears to be striking back at members of society that disagree with a certain lifestyle.I bought this book to be entertained with a story of vampires and not to get drug down into a debate on morality or social choices. If you have a differing social opinion than the author you might very well find the novel unreadable. Please read everything writen on this page about this book before you buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice, eat your heart out
Better yet, let Andrew do it for you. Not knowing exactly what to expect, I bought this book just looking for an entertaining read and a few laughs. What I found was so much more engrossing, and I'm now well into reading the book for a third time.

VA picks up where McMahan's last book leaves off.Previously we had only seen glimpses of Andrew (the book's anti-hero)through short stories, little more than an introduction. But in VA, we getto explore Andrew's existence eight years after having been brought intothe vampiric fold... and never was Lestat half as sharp with histongue.

I hesitate to compare McMahan's style with Rice's, but it's themost commonly known reference I can think of. The prose in VA isn't as"pretty" as Rice's, instead it tends towards relatively clippedphrases, both harsh and poignant. Yet it's meant to be. Coming from a 1stperson perspective, one is immersed not only in Andrew's world, but in hismind (as messed up and twisted as it might be.)

Additionally, the storyprovides an interesting metaphore for the so called Ex-Gay movement andconversion efforts through exploring the attempts of the Vampire'sAnonymous "twelve-step" group to lead vampires back to a more"normal" unlife. McMahan doesn't allow himself to get caught upin a political statement, but the effect is still there, lurking in thebackground.

The book is an engrossing read, and I highly recommend it tofans of the vampire genre, whether the reader is gay or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original, good read.
McMahan has done a wonder job with this gay vampire story, I just hate the story to end. Let's hope Mr. McMahan writes another real soon. Although, those that are looking for gore vampire, will find little of it here, thisone is a bit more humorous, but still a very excellent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book puts the life back in death!
If you squint your third eye a little bit, you can read this book as using "vampire" as a metaphor for "gay."Andrew, our undead hero, is unabashedly both of these, and takes us on a romp through his'unlife' -- not as sensual as Lestat's merry band of neck-biters, and alittle more disco.Nevertheless, the characters are well drawn--and you'lllaugh, cry, fly and die with them.Great fun and highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Big Book"Stories Left Out of the 4th, 3rd, 2nd, & 1st Eds.
This book is a collection of 56 stories which were found in either the multilith [1938], 1st [1939], 2nd[1955], or 3rd [1976] editions of Alcoholics Anonymous, aka "The Big Book," but are not contained in the 4th [2001] edition.
The multilith/typed version of the Big Book [available from GSO upon request] contained 20 stories from the 1938 membership of less than 80. One story, "Ace Full - Seven Eleven", did not make it from the Multilith edition to the 1st edition. One 1st edition story, "Lone Endeavor", did not make it into the second printing of the 1st edition. Nineteen of the original multilith stories were included in the 1st edition, and ten more stories were added to the multilith collection for the 1st edition, 1st printing, since the Big Book was skimpy in contents, despite being printed on extra thick paper, and was packaged and priced as a 1939 coffee-table book @ $3.50, to cover a printing cost of 35 cents. [The minimum wage in 1939 was 25¢ per hour = 14 hours of labor needed to purchase a copy of the Big Book. The equivalent 2004 price for the Big Book would be $70!]
Forty-six [Bill Wilson's story is not included in this count of personal stories; Bob Smith's story is counted, under two titles] of these stories were published in either the 1st or 2nd editions.Bill Wilson restructured the 1st edition in 1955. Only two stories from the 1st edition were retained intact. Three were edited, one of which was retitled. Two stories were completely rewritten, and 30 new stories were added to the 2nd edition for a total of 38 stories. The 1st edition, first printing, had 30 stories. The 1st and 2nd editions of the Big Book and the stories contained therein are in the Public Domain, i.e. not subject to copyright restrictions, since neither the 1st or 2nd edition Copyrights were renewed at the end of their original term.
The 3rd edition contained only 10 additional stories not found in the 2nd edition. Twelve of the stories in the 3rd edition were credited to The A.A. Grapevine, Inc., a personal newsletter originated by Bill Wilson to communicate directly to the membership. [This data crediting The A.A. Grapevine, Inc was omitted from the later printings of the 3rd edition.] Five of the stories in the 4th edition are credited to The A.A. Grapevine, Inc.
Almost all of the stories which were dropped from the 1st & 2nd editions were omitted due to the authors' relapses. Cultural changes is given as the predominant rationale for deletions from the 3rd edition and for inclusion of new stories in the 4th edition. A relapse did not cause a story to be dropped from the 4th Edition, "Women Suffer Too." [A listing of all of the stories contained in all four editions and the multilith manuscript is available by email from the reviewer.]

Book Description
January 24th

After you've had it, there isn't even life without drugs....

It started when she was served a soft drink laced with LSD in a dangerous party game. Within months, she was hooked, trapped in a downward spiral that took her from her comfortable home and loving family to the mean streets of an unforgiving city. It was a journey that would rob her of her innocence, her youth -- and ultimately her life.

Read her diary.

Enter her world.

You will never forget her.

For thirty-five years, the acclaimed, bestselling first-person account of a teenage girl's harrowing decent into the nightmarish world of drugs has left an indelible mark on generations of teen readers. As powerful -- and as timely -- today as ever, Go Ask Alice remains the definitive book on the horrors of addiction. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars stupid
This book is nothing but stupid anti-drug fiction. If you want to see that the biggest problem with drugs is the people against them, or if you are an idiot buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It kept me off drugs!
I read this book in the 70s, when I was 14 or 15.(On my old copy, Beatrice Sparks gets no mention). It seemed completelybelievable as a teenager's diary. Since it was edited, we don't know what was in the original that got cut out. (If you've read the "completed" Anne Frank diary compared to the popular version, you'll see some of the stuff concerning school friends got deleted because it was not relevant to the overall mission of talking about her hiding experience). What I do know for sure was that it told me all I ever needed to know about drugs and kept me from trying them.I felt like I'd experienced the highs and the lows just from reading the book. Some readers have complained that the teen writer used words that were too "big"?Well, I used similar words in my own personal diary.Maybe teenagers were better educated back then! What I did find hard to believe was the compression of time -- that she got her business up and running and successful in about 2 months or so and then left it. But overall, a great book to read. Even if it is not completely "true", I'm sure the experiences are true of drug addicts.

3-0 out of 5 stars a cant put down book
"GO ask Alice" is a good book, but i have to wonder if they are actual writen entries by a teen drug user.I not much of a reader but i actually finished the book. It had some twistes and turns and some shockers.i dont want to spoil anything but the ending kind of needed more.the ending is a just a statement. you read 200 and some pages to end up with a ending statement!that a ripe off!

1-0 out of 5 stars Work of fiction
For those who might still believe that this is a real diary, or for those who are still merely uncertain, a quick trip to the copyright page using Amazon's "Search Inside" feature will quickly and easily resolve the matter:

"This book is a work of fiction.Any references to historical events, real people, or real locales are used fictitiously.Other names, characters, places, and incidents are the product of the author's imagination, and any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental."

You can look it up yourself right now in a matter of seconds to confirm it.(And it's telling that this notice appears in later editions of the book, but not earlier ones.)

Considering that there are more than enough true stories about people ruining their lives with drugs -- attending an NA meeting will readily confirm that -- it's sad that this badly-written hoax continues to receive the attention that it does.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I had been searching for this book at the public library for a long time before i simply gave up waiting and bought it.I figured if it was never on the shelf, it must be good. And i was pleasantly surprised.
Go Ask Alice is about a teenage girl who is unknowingly given her first taste of drugs in the form of a coke laced with LSD at what might have seemed like a harmless party. From there things get worse. She runs away from home and gets caught up in a bad crowd. There's nowhere to go in this story but up.
The inspiring thing about Go Ask Alice is that she really tries to make amends, and give up her addiction. There are so many highs and lows in this book that I get dizzy thinking about it, and sometimes the diary feels rather scripted. But all in all I thought the book was a good read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Alcoholism--------it's a family disease

This Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions book is core for living -----and for living with our families. The hidden (and usually not talked-about in meetings) problem, though, is that more than 80% of A.A.'ers go home to a still-drinking spouse/child/elderly parent. Learning how to deal with all that is often critical to helping to maintain a sober and more sane daily life. The million-selling Getting Them Sober: You Can Help! (Getting Them Sober) book (endorsed by 'dear Abby' and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale) gives literally hundreds of practical and effective ideas on just how to do that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Misleading
It was common knowledge among the old-timers that Bill never finished--or even attemped to finish--the 9th step:He claimed the statute of limitations ran out... This is somewhat obvious by noting the tense change in his story in the original book--at the time of its writing he did not claim to have made amends--only that he was "supposed to set right the wrongs".He never achieved "the promises", or any regular peace of mind, and spent the remainder of his life chasing many other solutions, including LSD therapy, to battle the terrible depressions he suffered. It's interesting that, in this book, Bill claims that the 6th step "separates the men from the boys", when it is almost always the 9th step that takes that something extra to accomplish (apparently, it was too much for him).Further, note the copyright--the year after Bob died.It is likely that Bill didn't dare print this nonsense while Bob was around. This book is just Bill's thinking, and is not the consensus of the folks that really worked the program, as the original text is.He was a great salesman, but a very poor example of how to live--his sobriety was as a result of essentially living in the meetings, rather than that of leading a spiritual existence. This book is just his neurotic ramblings, and was written for the sole purpose of generating income for him.Too bad it has distracted so many from the original message.

5-0 out of 5 stars A neccesity for any addict
This book is very helpful in enriching your life if you are in a 12 step program and suffer from an addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing book.
I have tried to follow the 12 steps and 12 traditions for many years, but haven't really known what they are before I began working them with a sponsor. He keeps me honest -- and honesty is a necessity in any program designed to change lives. Without honesty, we refuse to accept the need for improvement or change -- and thus we don't change -- we stay in the "bad old place" which has become our virtual prison -- and condedmns us to a life of living hell.

Anyone who knows the misery of being trapped in a compulsive lifestyle which guarantees pain and often leads to death -- will find that honesty and perserverance in following the steps leads to a miracle of transformation. Transformation into a life of freedom from addiction through a life changing spiritual experience.

The AA 12 and 12 are the first in a number of incarnations of these steps focused on various addictions. Alcoholism, gambling addiction, drug addiction, compulsive over eating and many other addictive diseases are addressed and arrested by these steps as they are applied in particular ways for individual types of addiction.

This book is worth following, adjusting the language to fit the particular disease confrunted by the reader. It is, however not a self-help book. It does not work as only an educational tool -- if it did we would not need others' help. No, each person's transformation is definately associated with systematic group participation and one-on-one support with a sponsor. The relationship dimension of this process is accentuated by the descreption of the process by one of the co-founders of AA. Bill W. writes of this spiritual program in practical terms -- as this is the way it works -- it has worked for me and others.Try the process and see if it works for you.

Yes, read and study the book -- but join with others in the process of working the steps if you expect the process to be continuously beneficial to you. One of the secrets of success of those who follow the steps is the concept -- we are helped by helping others. The only way to avoid addictive behavior is by helping others onto the spiritual wagon with the destination of traveling the road to recovery, helping others on the way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Snake Oil Literature
This infamous book sells snake oil.The first of the six 12 steps originated with the OxFord Group, fundamentalists led by Frank Buchman, a man that wished to befriend Heinrich Himmler and referred to him as a "marvelous lad".AA captured Buchman's philosphy of groveling your sins before others/GOD.The OxFord Group was very heavily dependent on recruiting the well-to-do, thus its name. So, Wilson thought it would be great to organize a religion that does the complete opposite, down-and-out drunks.Yet, Wilson's GOD induced hallicinogens documented in this literature were induced by a narcotic, bella donna, an herb at the time used for drying out drunks, probably similar to what Meth was originally intended for heroin addicts.Doesn't seem very genuine, does it?His spiritual basis is rather false. And that is the hidden purveying theme of AA.AA is a joke, and if you buy into the propoganda, you've become part of it.

The first 164 pages of the Big Book weren't authored by Wilson, it was a group effort.Wilson was inept and could not write and claims to have merely been a "referee".Wilson was a businessman (rather inept), except when it came to stealing the copywrite of the Big Book under his own personal name. Thus, legally controlling it's profits.

Wilson demands that one become rigourously honest, yet he did not practice what he preached and was quite the alley-cat, hitting on helpless newcoming women to the point where someone was assigned by Wilson's side to curtail this practice.Eventually AA managed to give Wilson a secretary, so that he could still practice this lifestyle.Wilson did not have to work a day of his life, off of the efforts of other contributors to the Big Book, and Wilson did not give them $ for their contribuitions. So the 12 Step Program is based on a huge fallacy.

Getting back to Buchman, he was on the cover of TIME magazine on Hitler's B-day labeled Cultist Buchman (do Amazon search). This is the real bedrock foundation of AA, not the propoganda of honestly recovering drunks mending simply their ways with the Lord.Oh yes, the 12 Step advocate Wilson demands rigourous honesty and finds himself "experimenting" with LSD (as documented in AA literature or just do a google search) 20 years into sobriety. This "experiment" went on/off for over 2 1/2 years. Some program Wilson invented for himself.AA's spiritual foundation is similar to the prisoners running the prison.

So, if you want to go off the deep end and repeat cult induced mantras for years; and practice self induced guilt by confessing your sins to unqualified strangers practicing theology and psychology without a license, GO FOR IT!I did it, or at least signed-off on it for over 15years.

But you may think, what harm is it?A six billion $ industry profits off of the snake oil.Judges, social workers all enable it to grow.Betty Ford demands that you read the Big Book from cover-to-cover.No other option. The Big Book figures every angle for a fellow to fall into it's cult propoganda.Eventually the majority figure this out and leave. But the rest, many whom are still my friends today, are lost (some more than others) and are selling themselves short when they could be doing something more beneficial with their time, IMO. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A reasonable introduction for people new to twelve-step programs
I would like to say that this book is amazingly life changing and profound, as the Emotions Anonymous (EA) fellowship can be, but it's not. If you're familiar with twelve-step literature from other groups, and looking for something new and different, you will probably find the treatment of the twelve-steps in this book pretty vanilla. EA's program assiduously copies as much from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Al-Anon as can apply to people with with serious mental and emotional illness, and doesn't do much to extend it passed that.

In twelve-step addiction recovery programs (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Crystal Meth Anonymous, etc), there is in implied goal of changing behavior: changing oneself so that the desire to use drugs and alcohol is gone, or is at least manageable. In most other twelve-step programs that don't deal with drug addiction, there are plans in place to help control the compulsive behavior the program deals with. For example, in Overeaters Anonymous members follow food plans, in Debtors Anonymous members keep numbers and make a spending plan, in Gambler's Anonymous veteran members counsel newcomers on dealing with financial and legal problems and provide direction, in Sexual Compulsives Anonymous members follow a sexual recovery plan. In the Emotions Anonymous program, however, there is no similar extension to help guide members in changing their behavior. While some EA members will develop a new code of conduct, there are no specific guidelines or process in the program (book) for it. If anything, completely removing a concept of abstinence or behavior modification has taken a gear out of the engine that motivates recovery in other twelve-step programs.

All of this is not to say that this book isn't worth reading. For people who are coming to EA and are not familiar with other twelve-step programs, this book is a good introduction for understanding how twelve-step programs work, and following the first 82 pages of explanation there are 146 pages of inspirational EA member recovery stories. A strength of twelve-step groups is that they have developed a common language to describe problems and coping mechanisms. As folksy and pastoral as that language can be, it amounts to a kind of serendipitous cognitive therapy as it is used in the fellowship, and can be easily understood by a non-professional audience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly-written propaganda
Maybe it's because I'm now past the target age for this book, and because I now know about how Dr. Sparks in all probability just makes up these books instead of using real teen journals, but I didn't believe for one blessed moment that this book was a real teen journal, nor that Annie was a real person.I was a teenager of the Nineties myself, and am a nearly-lifelong journaller, and nothing about Annie (her personality, thought process, writing style, etc.) rang true. She and everyone else in this book come across as one-dimensional stereotypes and clichés, like they're all characters in some over the top morality play or afterschool special. It's so suspicious how the teens in all of Dr. Sparks's "real-life diaries" have the exact same writing style and moral preachiness, holding rather conservative views in line with her own.I don't begrudge her her sincerely held beliefs even though they're radically different from mine, but it's just morally irresponsible to push these beliefs on impressionable teens by pretending they're from peers instead of some over-the-hill ultra-conservative psychiatrist. There are far better ways to teach teenagers to not do drugs, have unprotected sex at young ages, get eating disorders, have an affair with a teacher, or join a gang than lying to them and trying to scare them straight.

I find it hard to believe that Dr. Sparks is that respected of an adolescent shrink, since she seems so profoundly out of touch with how real teens write, behave, talk, and think. But chances are, if she'd used a real diary from a pregnant teen she had worked with, it wouldn't have had the desired holier than thou moral preachiness, anti-abortion and anti-welfare rants, childish writing style, stereotypical characters, sense of shame and guilt for something like having sex or lying to one's mother, or depiction of all teen moms as terrible parents who are just setting their kids up for a lifetime of problems unless they do the responsible thing and place the babies for adoption.Teenagers are a lot smarter, more mature, articulate, and self-aware than she gives them credit for.Real teen journallers also don't over-analyse everything, use babyish expressions worthy of a six year old, use excessive italics and exclamation points, FREQUENTLY WRITE IN ALL CAPS (those sections were so annoying, irritating, and distrating I found myself just skimming over them), feel guilty for engaging in normal teen behaviors (like going to parties or lying to one's parents about their whereabouts), or apologise for having used the occasional curse word in their own journals.Annie also acts really bipolar, the way she's all happy, excited, and bubbly one moment, then depressed, angry, frustrated, and confused the next. The way she often talks to her journal like it's an actual person, even going so far as having entire back-and-forth conversations, arguments, and tantrums with it, would also seem to suggest a serious mental problem.

While there are a few things about her character that ring true, such as how many teen girls are in abusive relationships and how many young teen moms do feel overwhelmed when the baby arrives, those details are cancelled out by all of the over the top clichés and stereotypes littered throughout the rest of the book. The "relationship" with Danny develops way too fast, for instance, and she's already acting like he's her soulmate before she even knows his name, and then thinks they have some serious relationship when they've only had a couple of dates and hung out at school a few times. As the relationship wears on, she seems to deliberately put herself in bad situations and do the most foolish things possible, like going back to him after he first tries to rape her and then actually rapes her.I could see if this were a longer-term relationship, but making excuses, blaming herself, and wanting to stay with him for the sake of some minor fling at age fourteen?I never felt anything for anyone in this book, not even at the supposedly dramatic moments, like when Annie stages some elaborate ruse to trick her mother into thinking she was hit by a car instead of raped, or when she tries to abandon her baby. The characters and situations were just too unbelievable.

A real teen journal would also have a lot more mundane chit-chat, like about hanging out with friends, a movie she just saw, schoolwork, that sort of thing, not this obsessive focus on the "problem."And where are all of the details a normal teen girl would make sure to write about, like how she got the birth control pills or just how Danny was roughing her up during sex?How are we supposed to get accurate mental images of these people and things if all we're given are generalities?Unless of course this were deliberately written as a fictional teen journal about a specific issue and not really drawn from the pages of a real teenager's journal, something she never dreamt would be published.I also found it really hard to swallow how Annie is switched to an "unwed mothers' home" in her town.Such places do still exist, but they're far and few between anymore. How convenient one of the few still in existence is in her area. And what American teen of the Nineties would actually use the term "unwed mother"?What is this, the Fifties?Annie also looks down her nose on most of the "unwed mothers" in the school, particularly because they're planning to use welfare.I found the anti-welfare rhetoric to be even more offensive than the anti-abortion rhetoric.(And how is her baby allowed to leave the hospital after only about two weeks when she's two months premature?Don't most babies born at seven months need to spend at least a month in the hospital?)

The only real thing going for this work of fiction are the supplemental sections in the back. There are quizzes to find out if one is in an abusive relationship, a Q&A on birth control and teen pregnancy (which continues with the anti-welfare rhetoric and the downright offensive view that teens are automatically sub-par parents who are putting their kids at risk for all sorts of problems if they don't do adoption), and some resources for things like STDs and rape.Funny how the writing style in this section, as well as in the author's note, is the exact same one used by Annie all throughout the book, down to the FREQUENT CAPS.So it's not totally useless.I don't know whether to feel more sad, amused, or scared that apparently many teen girls believe this book was written by one of their own instead of an elderly shrink pretending to be some whiny immature self-absorbed holier than thou teenager.

Annie's Diary
Edited by: Dr. Beatrice Sparks
This book is based on a girl's diary that was faced with the worst experience of her life and was edited by Dr. Beatrice Sparks.
Annie, the main character of this book was madly in love with sports. She had been playing at one of her soccer games just like any other day and kaput she had gotten side tackled and limped off the field. While she was sitting on the bench this guy named Danny whom she had never met bothered to ask her if she was alright. Her eyes brightened; she thought she was in love Danny's looks had charmed her.
Annie never normally cared what she looked like for school but she was determined to make a good impression of herself to her mystery guy. Bell after bell every chance she got she would roam the halls looking for her prince charming. One day they finally ran into each other. He asked her out on a date. She was ecstatic and said yes. Her best friends were very supportive over her and agreed that it would be a bad idea for Annie to tell her mother about the guy she had met.
They began dating and Annie thought that they were destined to be together. They would always spend time alone together but then when it came to Danny's friends he never spoke a word to her. He acted like he didn't even know her. He was beginning to act stranger as the days went by.
Would Annie change her opinion and personality all over a guy who she thought she was destined to be with?
This was a great book it really got me involved in my reading I never wanted to put down I just wanted to keep reading and find out what happened next. This book brings a lot of suspense to me when I was reading and helped me realize what could happen in my own life. I would recommend this book to teenage girls or anyone who loves reading books based on true stories or diaries or to anyone who loves to read romance stories, or loves a good book that you can't stop reading.

Growing up around teenage mothers, this book really helped me to understand what they are going through. Anybody, child, parent, sibling, friend, who has a teenage mother or pregnant-about-to-be mother in their life, you should definitely read this book to get a better understanding of their feelings and emotions and how they still do have options.

Book Description
How the PC agenda on college campuses is endangering millions of students

Radical social agendas have taken over campus health and counseling, and it’s making students sick. Dr Anonymous should know: she’s treated over 2000 students at a prestigious university, and seen first hand how the anything-goes, women-are-just like- men, “safer-sex” agenda harms our sons and daughters. After years of hesitation, she’s speaking up.

In Unprotected you will learn:
* About an Ivy League university’s health website that okays risky behaviors including S&M, “swinging”, and bestiality

* How campus health centers hound students to stop smoking, eat right, get enough sleep, and wear sunscreen, but tacitly approve of promiscuity, and whitewash the consequences of sexually transmitted infections

* How HIV education is distorted, causing hysteria among students who are at no risk for infection

* How campus counselors focus on sexual orientation, abuse, molestation, cigarettes and caffeine, but neglect to ask students about abortion

* How ideology-driven health services lead young women to believe they are just like men – and to pay a high price for it.

* How, despite strong evidence of significant health benefits of church attendance and faith in God, psychology remains anti-religion -- an irrational, out-dated prejudice Dr Anonymous calls “theophobia”

Parents, educators, and health providers are all disturbed and mystified by the epidemic of sexually transmitted infections on our college campuses, as well as the rampant depression, suicidal behavior, eating disorders, and cutting. Dr Anonymous has seen it all. The solution, she contends, is not Zoloft or condoms. Instead, she urges her colleagues to stop feeding students platitudes about diet and exercise and misinformation about “protection”. What campus counselors and health providers must do, she argues, is tell uncomfortable, politically-incorrect truths, especially to young patients in their most vulnerable and confusing moments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
This book is amazing. The author sites study after study to show how misinformed and mislead young adults are today on different parts of society. They are encouraged to make choices that have been proven to hurt their physical, emotional and mental health. Though Grossman is a religious person, throughout the book she always approaches her different topics from a purely scientific point of view. She shows us that there are lifestyle choices we can make that are scientifically proven to help us lead happier and more fulfilled lives. She shows the reader that her profession has become so politically correct, that many times they are no longer helping young adults make good educated choices in their lives. These choices have long term effects on the students lives and shouldn't be guided by political correctness, but by scientific facts. Excellent book.
