4-0 out of 5 stars Mythology comes alive
I personally find mythology pretty fascinating. On some levels it is an attempt to explain the human psyche. On others, it is an attempt to answer "why."This text is inferior to no other in its stories of myth and legend. With a twist, the author explains many of the verses and dialogue in many of the classic dramas and writings of some of the world's most famous author's throughout the centuries. ... No new edition of Bulfinch's classic work can be considered complete without some notice of the American scholar to whose wide erudition and painstaking care it stands as a perpetual monument. "The Age of Fable" has come to be ranked with older books like "Pilgrim's Progress," "Gulliver's Travels," "The Arabian Nights," "Robinson Crusoe," and five or six other productions of world-wide renown as a work with which every one must claim some acquaintance before his education can be called really complete. Many readers of the present edition will probably recall coming in contact with the work as children, and, it may be added, will no doubt discover from a fresh perusal the source of numerous bits of knowledge that have remained stored in their minds since those early years. Yet to the majority of this great circle of readers and students the name Bulfinch in itself has no significance. Thomas Bulfinch was a native of Boston, Mass., where he was born in 1796. His boyhood was spent in that city, and he prepared for college in the Boston schools. He finished his scholastic training at Harvard College, and after taking his degree was for a period a teacher in his home city. For a long time later in life he was employed as an accountant in the Boston Merchants' Bank. His leisure time he used for further pursuit of theclassical studies which he had begun at Harvard, and his chief pleasure in life lay in writing out the results of his reading, in simple, condensed form for young or busy readers. The plan he followed in this work, to give it the greatest possible usefulness, is set forth in the Author's Preface. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to Greek mythology, and LOTS of fun!!!
Somewhere between fiction and anthropology, Start Exploring Bulfinch's Mythology recounts the famous Greek myths, with guides to pronunciation for the Gods' names. The stories are retold by Steven Zorn, who has shortened and simplified them for a younger audience. It is a great introduction to ancient Greek culture and religious legends, and will definitely help the student later, since literature and history allude to these famous tales. Alongside the stories are giant pictures to color in. The text and illustrations work together to make an awesome little book. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Coloring Book That Is Educational AND Fun!
Printed on high quality paper with a glossy, foldover velcro cover, this is not a cheap, crummy coloring book that you'd find in a supermarket or discount store.

Each beautifully drawn and nicely detailed picture is accompanied by a short story from mythology.Difficult words are glossed so that children can learn to pronounce the names of the characters and animals that they are coloring.

There are 16 stories and over fifty pictures to color as well as a 17 X 22 ready-to-color poster. The tales are adapted from Bulfinch's Mythology, a well-known classic retelling of the Greek tales.Included are: Hercules, the Odyssey, Daedalus and Icarus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Pygmalion, Phaethon, Medusa and Arachne, Cupid and Psyche, Atalanta, Baucis and Philemon, Pegasus and others. There are nice illustrations of many mythical beasts including the Hydra, the Cyclops, the Sirens and more.

When your child is finished coloring the pictures, the book is sturdy and high quality enough to take its place on his or her bookshelf to be enjoyed again and again.

An excellent introduction to the Greek myths for children. ... Read more
