5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Butt
It was so great to be able to reach over, knowing I'd be running out of steam in X amount of hours, figure where I'd be then, and find a motel in this book, call ahead and book.

It actually does have B&B's and some park info, so I'm not sure what the other reviewer was referring to. I am recommending it to many other dog-owning friends of mine. Just put in 10,000 miles and it really was a lifesaver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Books has lots of helpful information, things that you wouldn't get unless you were really there, such as how one of the beaches in california tried to band dogs a few years ago because of the poop, so we must keep it clean or they will try to close it again. I always clean up after my dog but if I saw some I would probably clean it up.Also good section on traveling with you dogs. And a couple great pictures. Good overall helpful book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best dog travel guide out there
I would not particularly recommend this book. It's organized by topic, with dog-friendly parks and beaches, and a long lodgings directory. The lodgings are heavy on chain motels, and lacked listings for some fairly large towns.
I will probably use this book mainly to make sure I'm not missing lodging options. The one feature I liked was a listing by interstate exit of dog-friendly lodgings. But, I don't travel much by interstate; I'm more interested in finding detailed lodgings in tourist-oriented destinations.
Dog-Friendly New England, which I've also reviewed, for example, is a far better guidebook for people who just want a weekend getaway.

2-0 out of 5 stars United States and Canada Dog Travel Guide
I can find more information in the Yellow Pages waste of money!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good travel with your dog guide
Having bought this guide book based upon the use of the dogfriendly.com website (which is a useful tool) - instead of buying the updated AAA guide for dogs - this book has mainly listings of chain hotels -for example Motel 6 and Red Roof Inns - it doesn't have anything much on national parks, camping or state parks - nor does it list dog accepting Bed and breakfasts (if you are solely going on highways this guide is okay - but if you venture off like I do - this guide is not handy) - in my opinion the AAA guide is the better one to buy - it still lacks certain things but this guide needs a much better edit before I would ever buy it again.

Book Description

There is no group of birds more mysterious and fascinating than owls. The loudmouths of the raptor world, they peep, trill, toot, bark, growl, shriek, whistle, chittle, whoop, chuckle, boom, and buzz. Indeed, very few actually "hoot." They have become the stuff of lore and legend -- from the Roman myth that an owl foot could reveal secrets to the First Nations belief that an owl feather could give a newborn better night vision. But the truth about owls is much more exciting.

In this gorgeous book, celebrated natural history writer and wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch reveals the secrets of this elusive species with stunning photographs, personal anecdotes, and accessible science. The photos alone are masterpieces. Unlike most published owl photos, which are portraits of birds in captivity, the vast majority of these were taken in the wild -- a product of the author-photographer's incredible knowledge and patience.

Lynch complements the photos with a wealth of facts about anatomy, habitat, diet, and family life. For each of the nineteen species that inhabit Canada and the United States, he provides a range map and a brief discussion of its distribution, population size, and status. Lynch debunks myths about owls' "supernatural" powers of sight and hearing, discusses courtship rituals, and offers personal tips for finding owls in the wild.

From the great horned to the tiny elf owl, this amazing volume captures the beauty and mystery of these charismatic birds of prey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owls of the US and Canada
This is another wonderful book by a real naturalist and consumate photographer. The images are just stunning photographically and from a naturalist's standpoint.Dr Lynch writes in a conversational tone that makes reading a pleasure, it's more like a conversation with him than anything else.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in either nature photography or birds, but especially if you like both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Owls of the US and Canada
A wonderful book. The large format and abundant photography at first suggest a coffee table book, but Lynch's contribution is much more than that. The writing is intellectually luminous, displaying a good mind and careful researching. Though the author is very up to date on current research in the field, the scholarship is unobtrusive - the text is free of footnotes and citations though these can be found at the end of the book.
The photography is in a league of its own. Lynch is a well-known wildlife photographer, and these photos show just why. The artistry and a technical excellence are breathtaking. For instance, the whiskered screech-owl on p. 16 is composed the way a painter would compose, but the photo still brings out the individual feathers, the half-closed eyes, the long beak hidden behind the whiskers. These birds are so closely observed they show more than I can see with my binoculars in a woodland walk. And add to this the field knowledge: owls are not sparrows or seagulls that one can see anywhere. To capture them on film, the photographer must spend hours in a blind, and travel to places far off the interstate. This book is one that will stay in the mind after it has been read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide To Owls
This book combines the personal experiences of the author with detailed information about the owls that live in the United States and Canada. The background information given in this book can be applied to more than one species of owls, and in some cases, it could be applied more generally to birds of prey. There are comparisons between humans and owls to give the reader a better image of what the author is describing. When there is a piece of general information given, the author gives examples of which owls that piece of information might be applied. The book is filled with wonderful photos, and includes a guide of owls that is located between the first two chapters.

This is one of the best books about owls that I have read. ... Read more

Book Description
The author of Fist Stick Knife Gun brings powerful new insight to the lives of boys in America today: "More and more I have become concerned with what boys think they should be, and what they believe it means to be a man." He lays out the little-understood history of drugs and their marketing to inner-city boys and takes a hard look at the issue of too-early sex, showing us, through a pointed story of his own sexual education on the streets, how the combination of age-old urges with new cultural forces and mores has created a volatile sexual terrain for boys. Canada writes indelibly of the young boy he once was and of the crucial issues ófatherhood, healing, mentors, self-esteem, faith, and more óthat must be negotiated as boys in America reach up for manhood.Boys are conditioned not to let on that it hurts, never to say, "I'm still scared." I have come to see that in teaching boys to deny their own pain we inadvertently teach them to deny the pain of others. . . . We must remember to tell them, "I know it hurts. Come let me hold you. I'll hold you until it stops. And if you find out that the hurt comes back, I'll hold you again. I'll hold you until you're healed." "Reaching Up for Manhood took me by surprise, because it is so tender, and so unpretentious, and so personal. It's a beautiful story, simply told óhonest, deeply sensitive, and morally empowering óby one of the few authentic heroes of New York and one of the best friends children have, or ever will have, in our nation."-Jonathan Kozol ... 5-0 out of 5 stars powerful read
In Reaching Up for Manhood, Canada effectively mixes personal history and policy analysis to describe a very serious problem facing a large segment of the U.S. population. He describes the trends, performing the difficult task of describing the difficulties without blaming the victims. While the victims are not blamed, neither are they left off the hook. The description of the young men who thought serving food at their community center was beneath them, and the consequences that followed, was particularly powerful.Canada is almost certainly correct that work and school must become a more expected part of life for the young men (and women) at risk.I'm concerned how this will be accomplished, however, with the manufacturing and similar work becoming more and more scarce as producers move overseas for cheaper labor and similar "benefits."While it is no means a solution, somewhere I would suggest for job training is within the field of developmental disabilities. There are many entry level jobs, and there is a career path.Every new avenue helps.Canada is also correct in calling for more responsible media conduct.I think it would be nice if the misogynistic thug-like actions of performers and athletes were not held up as "cool," but were instead treated as despicable by the media.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine addition to gender studies literature
Reaching Up for Manhood is an excellent guide for the layperson as to thepsychology behind the "cult of macho," by which so many youth areraised.Just as the author, Geoffrey Canada, points out, that today's fashions, be it sneakers or designer clothing, often originate in the innercity, so, too, has the inner city become a trend-setter in attitudes, whicheventually pervade our entire culture. Consequently, this book is alsoimportant for those who are either parents of, or work with, middle classyouth. Although the book is about boys, it is important reading forthose concerned with girls to better understand the interaction between thesexes. The weakness of Canada's book is that it is too concerned with lifein the "street" during his own adolescence, some 25 years ago. Itwould have been preferable to eliminate some of his own reminiscing andinclude more current anecdotes. On the other hand, Canada's style rendersthe book very intimate, as well as easily and quickly readable

3-0 out of 5 stars Like good eatin in New Orleans, this book was "good readin"
At first glance, the potential buyer of this book may not be attracted to the simple book cover. That will immediately change when you pick it up and start to read it. I was hypnotized by the simplicity of the reading. Thisbook can be read in one day and unlike many books, memorized. GeoffreyCanada does an excellent job of putting in words what some of the problemsare that are plaguing America's young boys. Though his book leans heavilytoward the "growing up" problems of African American boys, thelessons that he put out, apply to all American boys. Teenagers refusing towork at the soft drink table during a function (too beneath them), a youngman who fights off a thug who is attempting to steal his jacket(he thoughtthe guy was a friend of a friend), a young man who tries to kill himself, are just a couple of the real life examples in this book. This is all stuffof the real world of America's adolescents. I say this because I grew up inthe neighborhood that the Rheedlen Center caters to, and reading Canada'sbook was like taking a step back into time. And he is so right when he says"we" have to get involved in the lives of America's boys who needsupport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncommonly sensical
The author has amazing insights which, after reading or hearing, one says, "I should have known that before. It makes such good sense." I believe this is the kind of book that has the ability and sense to change and save lives. Terry Gross featured the author on her NPR program, Fresh Air, recently ... Read more

Book Description
Now running into its tenth season, South Park has still not “jumped the shark”. Satirically edgier than The Simpsons, South Park responds immediately to cultural controversies: four days after Saddam Hussein’s capture an episode lampooned it, and the show has no fear in tackling subjects like Terri Schiavo, The Passion of The Christ, and Michael Jackson, while co-opting disparate elements such as Kill Bill and Janet Jackson’s nipple into one episode. Its mixture of iconoclasm, cultural referents, and intertextuality makes it the perfect lens through which to examine contemporary popular culture in America – and television’s role in the creation of that culture.

Blame Canada! is a smart, readable book that will appeal to the show’s many fans as much as to scholars and researchers of contemporary television. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about South Park and culture
This is a great book about South Park and its relationship to contemporary culture. Many of the insights end up surprising. There are three parts to this book. The first part mentions the impact of South Park on culture and how it became popular and widespread. The second part is about the show itself: the dialogue, sounds, characters, and visuals. The third part deals with the issues presented in the show. There was an extensive amount of research done for this book and it shows. The author is also not a fan, so the insights come from a more neutral perspective, which makes the book an even better read.

The author also spends a lot of time on the impact and popularity of the show, which is unlike most book about tv shows and culture. The characters chapter is long but still unusually short for a tv show and culture book. Most books about TV shows and culture devote and entire unit and at least 40 pages to talk about the characters. Because she only devotes a chapter, there could have easily been more said about the characters.

All in all, if you are a fan of South Park or like reading about popular culture, then you should read this book. It is entertaining, insightful, and enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
Just when I began to despair about finding a real fan resource for South Park, along comes "Blame Canada".The various edited volumes about South Park and philosophy (Arp and Hanley) seem to be collections of scholarly opinions that I am sure are important to some obscure university lecture series on philosophy, and Anderson's "South Park Conservatives" is really only of interest to militant Log Cabin Republicans."Blame Canada" is well constructed, well written and thought provoking. As a fan, I find it a fascinating resource, more so because the author is clearly NOT a fan herself.Neither a sycophantic piece nor a knee-jerk condemnation, "Blame Canada" is accurate and dispassionate.

My favourite chapter in "Blame Canada" is the chapter on South Park and the internet. It documents a period of internet history that had nearly been lost, in which South Park featured uniquely as a pop culture window into the infancy of the internet. I myself, who came late to the South Park phenomenon, had been unable to track down the grass roots fan information that should have been available on the internet for any pop culture icon as important as South Park. Now I know that it is a result of the engulf-and-devour policy of Comedy Central towards "unauthorized" South Park content on the web, which is somewhat ironic considering the libertarian content of the show.I am left to wonder how much more of internet history is being lost forever as technology changes, web pages are updated without being archived, and corporate America exerts more and more control over internet content.

The most interesting aspect of "Blame Canada", however, is the theoretical framework in which Johnson-woods places the show.South Park is nothing if not carnivalesque, so it is an apt analysis. But more than that, through the Baktine analysis South Park fandom becomes legitimized, and South Park becomes as much (and as normal) a pop culture influence in its time as Star Wars or I Love Lucy were in theirs. It is refreshing to know that fan attraction to fart jokes is as old as fandom itself, and not some new aberrant form of entertainment that is a result of (or even responsible for) the moral decay of our society.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Blame Canada", and I am happy to recommend it highly to any South Park fan.It is a worthy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars How religion in America escaped state control
This excellent, detailed history shows what was new about Christianity in the New World. It portrays the dramatic contrasts between official colonial churches and various refugee sects, with their different visions of how they might relate to each other. Where the first colonies, provinces or states usually had official state churches, Noll documents the issues of church relations on the borders or frontiers between these domains. Into these zones, dissidents of all stripes fled from state-backed religion. And in areas where no religious group had a majority, Noll records how people learned to meet their community needs and get along: "The result was a degree of interdenominational tolerance probably unknown anywhere else in the world at that time". (p. 89) Noll's statement may overlook the religious diversity of India or China, but for the Christian world it applied.

Of course Noll's book holds far more, and is of interest to people of every denomination in Canada and the USA. I was just most impressed by the explanation of how religion in North America escaped state control.

5-0 out of 5 stars A History of Christianity in the United States and Canada
This is a very good book for Church History. It is a single volume that is written on a fairly east-to-read level. If you've not read a Church History reference before, this would be a good choice with which to start.

Mark Noll's works are always good.

5-0 out of 5 stars History in America - The Religious History
This book helps us to remember the Christian Heritage of our country. By studying the Christian Heritage of our country we can see how the secular history has played out too and how they go hand in hand. This book by Mark A. Noll helps to bring this rich history in an easy to read format. This book is also a great resource for research and to help with illustrations for sermons and Sunday School lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource
This is a nice read for history books.A lot of information. This is also good for someone who is studying American Literature because it is a good background source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Story of Christian North American History!
I was required to read this book for a seminary class and instead of being intimidated or turned off by its over 500 pages, I found the book to be an extremely enjoyable read.

Noll describes the spread of Christianity from the Roman Catholicism of the 1500s to today's pluralism.Particulary enjoyable were the chapters on: the Puritans, The Great Awakenings, Churches in the American Revolution, Evangelical America during the Civil War, Intellectual Challenges to the Christian Faith in the Early 1900s, certain personalities (Billy Graham, Martin Luther King, Fulton Sheen), and the Southern Baptist Convention.

A very interesting read, I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the history of Christianity in America!

Book Description
When award-winning educator and activist Geoff Canada was growing up in the Bronx, the "sidewalk" boys learned the codes of the block from their elders and were ranked--and to some degree protected--through the rituals of fist, stick, and knife. Weaving in and out of his stark storytelling is a cogent analysis of how the complicity of gun manufacturers turned this contained violence into today's world of drive-by shootings and automatic weapons. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading for a Better Society
This is hands down one of the best books I have read. Not only does Geoffrey Canada explain in gritty detail the inner workings of ghetto society, he also lists solid well-thought solutions, which would enable inner city youth and residents to rise above poverty and despair. We, the people, have turned a cheek for much too long. Something really can be done. This book should be required reading for high school and college-level coursework.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fistacuffs is better!
Dr. Canada presents an emotive argument for gun control through story and eclecticism. He makes an interesting case for the slide from Fist to Gun without ever dealing with the reason for the violence of fist and/or gun. One might argue with his conclusions though one cannot argue with his heart's concern as to the results caused by the increased violence. Overall, a good read for thought and/or argument.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have heard the author speak
I personally have had the opportunity to hear Geoffrey Canada speak at my college twice, he an alumni of Bowdoin College. Not only is his book inspiring, he spoke to my class about joining the "losing team", and making a difference in the lives of others, like those of the South Bronx and Harlem, NY.Not only has he lived to tell, he has taken his experiences and turned them into something very positive, by developing and running the Harlem Children Zone, making a difference to those children there. The book is a great read for anybody who is an urban educator, or involved in social services.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rivetting exploration of the roots of violence
Canada grew up poor in the South Bronx in the '50s. Violence, then, as now, was a way of life. All boys fought - life was worse for those who refused. Violence and the rituals surrounding it established the social pecking order. In the preface to his memoir Canada says, "The difference is that we never had so many guns in our inner cities."

Canada's first memory of street violence came at age 4, when his two older brothers had a jacket stolen at the playground. The boys' mother sent them right back to fetch it, promising them a beating "ten times as bad as what that little thief could do to you," if they failed.

They left the house in tears and returned triumphant, with the jacket. Their mother sat them down and told them it was a lesson in not becoming a victim. The author, her youngest, was unconvinced.

Then a neighborhood boy who habitually refused to fight was "stretched" over a car and savagely beaten by a group of boys. "The lesson was brutal and unmistakable. No matter who you fought, he could never beat you that bad."

Canada's memoir is a thoughtful, moving portrayal of social behavior in a culture of violence. A quick study, Canada learned to use posturing, attitude and negotiation as well as his fists to minimize the number and severity of violent encounters.

But he is absolutely convinced that violence is a learned response, not innate. He and the other small boys, says Canada, were aghast at the prospect of fighting. Only fear of worse violence and a life of cowering in corners spurred them to fight.

Today, says Canada, the same imperatives operate. But guns have shattered the rituaized formality of the pecking order. Toughness is no longer determined by fighting skills or "heart" but by willingness to pull the trigger.
This is the book's most chilling precept. The streets are now ruled by those whose most important attribute is a lack of compunction about killing.

Canada's own experience as a gun carrier is a perfect illustration. Home from college he found a nearby street ruled by a gang of toughs so intimidating he would take a circuitous route to avoid them. So he bought a gun. Carrying it, he found his whole personality changed.

Instead of avoiding the block or even crossing the street he would swagger through the gang, his whole attitude provoking a challenge. But back at school in bucolic Maine he saw his behavior in a different light. Appalled at how close he'd come to shooting someone, he threw away the gun.

Those who don't leave the ghetto don't have the luxury of contemplation.

Canada has devoted his life to helping poor children and reducing street violence. Today he runs a program which offers classes and recreational activities which involve the whole community. The Rheedlen Center uses public school buildings, open 17 hours a day, in an effort to provide children and families with safety.

At the end of the book, Canada offers a program for solving the problems of violence in the inner cities. Chief among them is getting handguns off the streets by using buyback programs, registration at the place of manufacture (so any gun can be traced) and registration of ammunition.

Whether the reader agrees with his solutions or not, Canada's memoir is powerful testimony of a future of little hope without major change. It is also a riveting and convincing personal history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Child in the 'Hood
This little book is a lot of different things:a memoir of a violent childhood, a study in the psychology the urban poor, a treatise against the gun industry; and a promotion of community service centers.Collectively, these pieces make up an impassioned plea to end the insanity of violence and chaos in the inner city, to stop ignoring the fact that many of our cities' neighborhoods have death rates that qualify them as war zones. It's compelling reading, although at times it felt a little like preaching to the converted.I wish the author had focused exclusively on his childhood; for me, these parts of the book are by far the most interesting. As a teacher who works with inner-city kids, I want to know more about what it's like growing up in that environment, how it shapes your world view. The glimpses we get of the author's neighborhood in the Bronx are fascinating, the best biographical writing I've read in a long time.

The story of the author's adult involvement in violence prevention is worthy of telling, but I think it belongs in a separate book.In the context of Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun, the perspective of the adult community activist seems simplistic and almost disrespectful to the stark drama of the childhood memories; "that was the problem, here's my solution," Canada seems to imply. The easy answers he offers muffle the powerful resonance of his stories of growing up on the streets. ... Book Description
According to The Association for Canadian Studies, over 10,000 Americans moved to Canada in 2006 – hitting a new 30-year record. Already, there are hundreds of thousands of Americans living in Canada. The similarity in language, currency, culture, services and products of these two countries can lead Americans in Canada to mistakenly think its laws and customs are also the same. It is these areas where The American in Canada will be crucial to anyone either contemplating a move or already living in Canada. For example, consider the following questions:

  • What legal means are available to immigrate to Canada?
  • Will U.S. Medicare provide coverage in Canada? When are you eligible for socialized healthcare in Canada?
  • Is your U.S. living trust and estate plan valid in Canada? What are the tax implications of moving to Canada with a U.S.-based trust?
  • Do American citizens have to continue filing U.S. tax returns when living in Canada?
  • Can you continue to collect U.S. Social Security if you move to Canada? If so, how is it taxed?
  • What happens to your IRAs, 401(k) plans and other investments when you move to Canada?

The American in Canada answers all these questions and more, focusing on immigration planning, customs planning, cash management, income tax planning, retirement, wills and estates, risk management and investments. Co-authors Brian Wruk and Terry Ritchie explain clearly all of the things to consider when making the transition to Canada.

This book is an invaluable resource for Americans who have married Canadian citizens; move for employment opportunities; are professional athletes or entertainers; or are Canadian citizens simply moving back home to be closer to friends and family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info!
This book provides a tremendous amount of information for many species and subspecies. It includes habitat, range, diet, etc. I recommend this book as a reference book for anyone interested in snakes. In my opinion, this book is not intended to be read from cover to cover, since it reads more like a scientific/academic reference field guide for general snake species info.
