5-0 out of 5 stars --Well done and charming story--
A library search of quilting information produced this book.I was actually looking for a quilt instruction book. and didn't realize that it was an actual story until after I requested the title from the library.I was initially disappointed because it was not what I was expecting. but since I was intrigued by the title, I read the little book.

THE CANADA GEESE QUILT takes place after World War II in Vermont. The main character is Ariel, a 10-year-old girl who loves being outside and has a natural talent for drawing. She lives on a farm along with her parents and her grandmother. Grandma is a lively lady and a gifted quilter. People around the country and even the world have purchased her wonderful quilts. Ariel shares a lot with her Grandma except for one thing.Ariel hates to sew.

The story begins with Ariel watching the sky as the geese return from colder areas up north. It's one of her delights to see the large flocks of geese in flight. This is also a time of change for the family because they will have a new baby in the fall. Ariel has mixed feelings about the baby and her Grandma decides that the two of them should make a quilt to welcome the little one. Ariel draws the design and her Grandma does all of the sewing.

All is going well until the old lady has a stroke and after weeks in the hospital, she returns home.Grandma can barely speak and when she does, it's hard to understand her.She must now use a cane to support herself when she walks. Ariel doesn't know what to say and even how to act with this lady who is like a shell of her real Grandma. Over time, Grandma and Ariel reach an understanding and decide that they must get back to the quilt, but since her grandmother can't even hold a needle, Ariel must now finish sewing the quilt.

Growing up can be frightening for children when they are faced with all of the changes that come with life. This gentle story handles two situations in a warm and loving way.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book about how families change.
Ten-year old Ariel's best friend is her grandmother. After her grandmother suffers a stroke, Ariel is afraid of this woman who has lost the will to live. With her help, her grandmother begins to walk and talkagain, and Ariel gains a new understanding of the 'knowledge' that ispassed on through the generations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ariel and her sick grandma make a quilt for a baby.
I loved it because her grandma made her a quilt just for her.The quilt helped Ariel feel better about the coming baby. This reminds me of my life because when my sister was born I didn't get that much attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book dealing with changes in family relationships
I am teaching my 10 year old daughter to quilt. She found this book in the "Accelerated Reader's Program" at school and read it because it had quilt in the title. We read two chapters every evening and we loved every page! It was hard to wait for the next evening to arrive so we could read the next chapters. This is a story about a young girl with many changes in her life. Her mother is expecting another child and her Grandmother comes to live with them. The girl loves to draw ane her Grandmother asks her to draw a picture so she can make the new baby a quilt. Many changes occur within the family because of the pregnancy and then serious health problems for the Grandmother after the quilt is started. The story revolves around the young girls struggles with the changes and who will finish the new baby's quilt.A great book to read with a warm and believable ending. ... Read more

Book Description

Canada is covered by a system of law and governance that largely obscures and ignores the presence of pre-existing Indigenous regimes.Indigenous law, however, has continuing relevance for both Aboriginal peoples and the Canadian state. In his in-depth examination of the continued existence and application of Indigenous legal values, John Borrows suggests how First Nations laws could be applied by Canadian courts, and tempers this by pointing out the many difficulties that would occur if the courts attempted to follow such an approach.By contrasting and comparing Aboriginal stories and Canadian case law, and interweaving political commentary, Borrows argues that there is a better way to constitute Aboriginal / Crown relations in Canada. He suggests that the application of Indigenous legal perspectives to a broad spectrum of issues that confront us as humans will help Canada recover from its colonial past, and help Indigenous people recover their country.Borrows concludes by demonstrating how Indigenous peoples' law could be more fully and consciously integrated with Canadian law to produce a society where two world views can co-exist and a different vision of the Canadian constitution and citizenship can be created.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Find for Young Readers
This book is a great book for youngsters. While its immediate impact would be on early readers due to its effectiveness in reinforcing the alphabet and helping them learn about Canada in a simplistic format, I think upper elementary and even some lower junior high readers can appreciate its sentiments. Even adults who enjoy a good picture book can enjoy this read. A great gift for up and coming readers! Looking for something similar with a little more depth and a higher reading level for older readers- try M is for Maple by Mike Ulmer.

Book Description

A superb portfolio of pictures by one of Canada's greatest photographers.

Canada's landscape is like no other. Its sheer diversity is staggering: vast prairies and forests, impressive coastlines, majestic inland lakes and rivers, and urban parklands. Each season adds its own dimension of beauty.

As much as it reveals the geography of a country, landscape photography also documents the random events, whether fleeting or grand, that capture the essence of a country.

This magnificent collection spans 20 years of the work of Canada's renowned landscape photographer, J.A. Kraulis: a flash of lightning exploding across a summer sky; a sudden winter storm descending on an otherwise tranquil coastal bay; the surface of a lake, caught in a moment of stillness, mirroring the world around it.

These 200 handsome color photographs record the vast and beautiful Canadian landscape. They tell the tale not only of a country, but also of the photographer's inspiring relationship with it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but....
Janis Kraulis has been making his mark as a Canadian landscape photographer for a long time. I have books involving him dating back to the 1970s, when he edited the brilliant (and long out of print) The Art of Canadian Nature Photography.

No doubt about it, he has a wonderful eye and knows how to string sentences together. He also knows how to assemble pictures in an interesting way, often putting scenes thousands of kilometres apart together on facing pages by virtue of some common element such as a rock pattern or colour of flower.

Sadly, however, he has fallen into the trap of excessive filter use advocated by the likes of fellow Canucks Daryl Benson and Darwin Wiggett. They constantly over-use blue-yellow polarizers, enhancers and graduated density filters (which darken parts of pictures) and Kraulis seems firmly in that camp.

This means you are constantly staring at photos that seem glaringly unrealistic -- with light foregrounds and ridiculously dark backgrounds/horizons, plus garishly hued rocks and water. After awhile, it becomes tiresome.

And why so little information in the photo captions? Sure, this book is aimed mostly at the non-photographer who wants something nice on the coffee table, but since there was usually tons of space on each page for captions, why not add something for photo enthusiasts, such as why the picture works on an artistic level or when/how he achieved the final result?

In the end, you'll probably like Grand Landscapes of Canada. But something more real and natural and appealing to photographers would have been better ... Read more

Book Description

It has been said that Canada is a country with too much geography and too little history. Afghanistan has too much of both. As the war escalates in Afghanistan, more Canadians are asking what we are doing there. For a country that has specialized in peacekeeping, this war is a shock — one that we have not yet comprehended. As the casualties mount, Canadians will want to know why we are there.

Canada in Afghanistan introduces readers to Afghans and their culture, gives historical background from our involvement since 9/11, and covers operations casualties and the results. Also included is an examination of a new strategic experiment — the provincial reconstruction team and the technological advances used in this war. Cautionary predictions conclude the book. Canada in Afghanistan is an introduction to what is happening in Afghanistan and what we can expect through 2009.

Book Description
For anyone curious about the geological history of our country, Canada Rocks is a marvelous portrait of what the authors describe as the incredible 4 billion year 'construction project' that gave shape to the continents, mountains, and oceans of planet Earth, and created the world's second largest country - Canada.

Profusely illustrated throughout with full colour and black and white photographs, charts, maps, graphs and sketches, the book explores the country from north to south, and from east to west, exploring that incredible history through modern day sites and land shapes created in our distant past.

Read about:

  • Rocks in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax were once part of Morocco, left behind when the Atlantic Ocean came into being.

  • Canada's Arctic regions were formerly part of what today is Siberia. Greenland was once a part of Labrador.

  • Fossils in a road cut in Cache Creek, British Columbia once lived in a sea that covered China.

  • The violent collisions of continents and other land masses, the growth and decay of enormous mountain ranges, the impact of meteorites, and the comings and goings of vast ice sheets are explored in fascinating detail, as is the creation of our rocky resources from coal to diamonds.

An essential reference for students and anyone fascinated with the geological forces that created our country, the book includes a great many sites that can be visited for close-up study, making it an invaluable field guide for exploring our history and the world around us. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photography, sketchy details
I love this book.It has detailed information on Canada's physical environment that would be hard to match anywhere else. However, there are a number of typos (mis-spelling Silurian, for example) which suggest it was put together in haste. Some inaccuracies as well: on page 295 is a picture of Mt Yamnuska, demonstrating the McConnell thrust fault which has Cambrian carbonates overlying Cretaceous shales and sandstones (75 million years old) [...].The caption below the photograph tells the reader the shales are Jurassic, which is incorrect. There is also a reference to a drumlin field near Livingstone lake in Saskatchewan, claimed to be in Alberta.
I shudder to think what else is wrong with this work.I would advise anyone planning to purchase this book to wait for a later edition which hopefully will correct these problems.
Otherwise, however, this is an excellent source of information for those who know their geology a little bit, and the photographs are superb!

3-0 out of 5 stars Viewers aware! disappointed!
I agree with the review written by John Vantel on July 16, 2005. I am disappointed at this book. I can find much more valuable information at the small "real estate" section of "Personal Finance for Canadians for Dummies" than this whole book. The book has compiled a simple to-do-list for people who will be interested in doing real estate investment. It is an ok job. I think the main purpose for this book is rather to get people sign in for their monthly paid membership program or attend their seminars. Just to be aware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you want to buy revenue property in Canada or elsewhere
This is an excellent, step by step, clear and consise approach to how to acquire good revenue property.Much like a John Grisham novel, it is hard to put down before you're done!Excellent network supporting the process available to you too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning, FAKE reviews
Please be aware that all the 5 star reviews you see below are all probably written by the auther himself. You will notice that all the reviewers have posted within a very short time from each other, most have a common single name, and if you click on their name this is the only review they have written on Amazon.

I have not read the book, but if the publisher/author had to resort to abuse of the Amazon peer review system, then his advice can't be worth taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for Canadian real estate investing
Don Campbell finally fills in a needed gap in real estate literature."Real Estate Investing In Canada" is a great book on real estate investing focusing completely on Canada.

Mr. Campbell goes through the basics on real estate investing by telling the story of a new investor.I somewhat liked the approach... only partially because I've done a lot of reading on real estate before and this was a little bit tedious. However I wish I had read this book first and then the other books because this broke down the process really well.

The organization of the book is exceptional and the major points are spelt out.It is also an easy read with a lot of great information, particularly the mortgage binder.

On the downside, the book could have used a little more detail in specific Canadian techniques that an investor can use as well as in structural analysis (major points to look out for). However the book still deserves it's 5 out of 5 stars rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally ý a book for Canadians that works!
After reading a lot of books and taking a lot of courses, this book finally fills the gap.It does it practically and teaches you the basics you need to know to really buy property. No fuss, no muss, just do it using a simple approach. The other guys tell you stuff to sell books, Don tells you stuff to buy properties.

I have purchased several properties using these exact systems.

Thanks Don! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the definitive reference
this book is not for the novice trying to identify the tree is his or her backyard. It is the most complete, thorough, up to date, and expansive identification manual for vascular plants for the eastern side of north America: A large, heavy textbook with no pictures, full of complex scientific descriptions and nomenclature in dichotomous key format. If you don't know what that means, you most likely will not find this book user friendly. That being said, it is a wonderful book, providing answers where other high end, professional botanist volumes leave ambiguity or contradiction. Excellent, clear, easy to use. A must have for anyone seriously studying plants in this region from the undergraduate to the post graduate level.

Book Description
If Canadian conservationists had had their way at the turn of the twentieth century, their country would be the place Americans looked to when they sang yearningly of a home where the buffalo roamed. With the proper measures, Canada could have been a haven for North America's wild animals, a place where remnant populations devastated by settlement and development would recover and flourish. The country's treatment of wildlife became a way for some Canadians to distinguish themselves from their southern neighbours. For others, it embodied a different kind of ecological consciousness, one that reconciled human needs with those of wildlife. For them, Canada could be home to people as well as a place where wild things lived and played.

Despite the international celebrity of Canadian environmentalists such as Jack Miner and Grey Owl, and the fact that wildlife is literally common currency in the country, the story of saving Canada's wildlife is largely unknown. States of Nature is the first book to tell that story, looking at the changing substance, aims, and impacts of the conservation initiatives undertaken by government as well as private organizations and individuals during the twentieth century, before the emergence of the modern environmental movement.

Organized around case studies, this book will appeal to specialists in environmental history as well as in Canadian and social history. It will also be useful to policy makers and of interest to general readers who want to know how the country's history was intertwined with wild things and the people passionate about them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A colorful look at Canada
"Canada," by Elaine Landau, combines a straightforward text with lots of full-color photographs. The book is a basic introduction to Canada. Topics covered include the country's history, ethnic diversity, geography, educational system, sports, economy, government, and cultural scene. Some specific issues addressed include the Quebec separtist movement and the 1999 establishment of Nunavut as a self-governing Inuit territory.

The book includes a brief bibiliography, a list of Web sites, a glossary, and an index. The photographs capture some memorable images: the magnificent Chateau Frontenac in Quebec city, a Canadian Indian in colorful feathered attire, the wooded shores of Lake Superior, and more. Overall, an informative and visually striking introduction to this nation. ... Read more
