Book Description
The films of John Carpenter cover a tremendous range and yet all bear his clear personal stamp. From the horrifying (Halloween) to the touching (Starman) to the controversial (The Thing) to the comic (Big Trouble in Little China), his films reflect a unique approach to filmmaking and singular views of humanity and American culture.
This analysis of Carpenter's films includes a historical overview of his career, and in-depth entries on each of his films, from 1975's Dark Star to 1998's Vampires. Complete cast and production information is provided for each. The book also covers those films written and produced by Carpenter, such as Halloween II and Black Moon Rising, as well as Carpenter's work for television. Appendices are included on films Carpenter was offered but turned down, the slasher films that followed in the wake of the highly-successful Halloween, the actors and characters who make repeated appearances in Carpenter's films, and ratings for Carpenter's work. Notes, bibliography, and index are included. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars LESSER THAN EXPECTED
I was rather dissappointed reading this book.Altough It provides interesting insight to the historical aspects of Carpenter's work it lacks indepth analysis when attempting to comment on the films.I understand there's a well meaning effort here to address the average viewer and that is done successfuly, giving Carpenter the status he deserves, but to me Carpenter's movies are a lot more than that and some suggestions regarding some screenplay details seem to loose the point completely.

5-0 out of 5 stars John Carpenter's Movies
I ordered this book after buying and enjoying three others by this author and found this one to be another excellent addition to my library. This book contains detailed information on each of Mr. Carpenter's films including a synopsis, list of cast and crew, critical reception for each film and a section with the author's commentary. This book is extremely well written and a very enjoyable read. I find myself looking through it often and it has led me to pick up some of John Carpenter's movies to add to my collection.

For anyone who is a John Carpenter fan or a horror fan this is one book they should not be without and for the casual movie fan they would enjoy adding this book to their library.

The other books I have by John Kenneth Muir are: Horror films of the 1970's, Wes Craven: the Art of Horror and Eaten Alive at a Chainsaw Massacre: the films of Tobe Hooper. These are all excellent books and I highly recommend them to horror fans and movie fans alike. I am currently awaiting the release of his next book: The Unseen Force: the Films of Sam Raimi as I know it will be another excellent addition to my library.

1-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU LOVE TO WASTE MONEY , THEN THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!
this is one of the worst books i've ever bought. if you have ever read Fangoria magazine you would have gotten better pictures and more information on mr. carpenter. how can a book like this not go into detail about carpenters famous movie scores! the book is not complete for they don't even mention the made for tv movie ELVIS he made with kurt russell.better information could be obtained from dvd production notes.somebody please write a fitting tribute to a great director.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate John Carpenter Guide
Perhaps the greatest research and analysis of any filmmaker (let alone of Carpenter himself) I've had ever the joy of reading.Muir certainly gave me a completely different perspective of Carpenter's films. I actually found myself going back and re-watching scenes of his films I've watched a million times in a new light (After learning of Carpenter's motivations for "Escape From L.A." in this book, I went from seeing it as a so-so sequel, to terrific remake!). I can't reccomend it enough to anyone who, like myself, would call Carpenter their favorite director. His reviews and insights are both honest and insightful (his critique of the Carpenter produced "Halloween III", a guilty pleasure of mine, had me roaring with laughter). Don't balk at the price, it's absolutley worth it as it is packed full of fascinating information. If you-re a die hard Carpenter fan, you'll be missing out if you pass this up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Erudite, engaging and enjoyable
Muir's comprehensive analysis of the works of John Carpenter moves even the dilettante to review them with a more appreciative perspective.Muir reveals interesting sociological and psychological themes withinCarpenter's works that compel the reader to truly re-evaluate Carpenter'stalent.

The book was obviously written by an author who "knows hisstuff" and appreciates the full value of the subject matter. This iswhat makes reading this work enjoyable and entertaining.I recommend thisbook to any fan or critic of the works of John Carpenter. ... Read more

Book Description
Oliver Otis Howard devoted his life to the service of his country, both as a distinguished army officer in two wars and as the founder of two universities. Oliver Otis Howard was a graduate of Bowdoin College and of West Point. Being reared in a pious New England (Maine) atmosphere gave him a deep sense of obligation to lead a Christian life, for the good of others and for the development of his own best self. He was often disturbed by the conflict presented him in his dual career in peace and war.General Howard’s strong sense of duty to his country brought about his distinguished career of command during the Civil War—at the Battle of Chancellorsville, itself a disappointing rout, and at Gettysburg, where he recovered any reputation the earlier defeat might have lost him. Under General Sherman, in the Atlanta campaign, and as a leader of the Army of the Tennessee he won special distinction. In total, Howard fought at the First Bull Run, Fair Oaks (where severe wounds forced the amputation of his right arm), Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. The same strong sense of duty made him accept the commission of the Freedmen’s Bureau and the promotion of African–American education. Following his service in the Nez Perce Campaign of 1877 he was superintendent of West Point and the founder of Lincoln Memorial University. His greatest service to education, however, was as founder and president of Howard University, where his name and career are held in honor. ... Read more

Book Description
To study this composer is to study the tastes and trends of the American people from 1912 through World War II. This bio-bibliography presents Carpenter's life and works, as well as the contemporary views, reviews, and criticisms that reveal historical attitudes and prejudices of American life in those troubled times. Looking back several decades, it is possible to discover what was enduring, what was transitory, and what elements would become important to our present state of musical composition. This volume includes a biography, a list of works and performances, a discography, and an annotated bibliography and will be of interest to students of music, dancers and choreographers, history buffs, and music lovers alike. Throughout, one will find many "gems" from reviews. Although Carpenter was an American with a Harvard education who quoted American popular tunes, he was also an eclectic. He wrote many works in a French impressionistic style, some with Germanic forms, and sometimes borrowing Spanish, Russian, and Oriental melodies, rhythms, and instruments. He was inspired by programmatic ideas and even wrote the program notes for his Adventures in a Perambulator suite. Humor and fantasy can be found in this suite, which depicts a baby's stroll through the park with its nurse, and in Krazy Kat, his jazz pantomime based on George Herriman's cartoon strip. Jazz first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in the 1926 production of Skyscrapers, Carpenter's ballet of work and play. Carpenter was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, 28 February 1876 and died 26 April 1951 in Chicago. New recordings of his music have recently been issued in LP and CD formats. ... Read more

Book Description
Written for ranchers, landowners, 4-H-ers, veterinarians, and anyone interested in wild or ornamental plants, Toxic Plants of Texas is a complete, practical guide to 106 of the most common poisonous plants in Texas.

In a handy, well-illustrated format, experts Charles R. Hart, John C. Reagor, Bruce B. Carpenter, A. Catherine Barr, and Tam Garland provide descriptions of each plant, explaining where it grows, what makes it toxic, and how much an animal must eat to be affected. They also offer a primer on different kinds of poisoning, lists of symptoms, and strategies for treatment and prevention. An overview of integrated toxic plant management summarizes an economical and environmentally sound approach to reducing livestock losses by controlling toxic plants. At the back of the book, a field key cross-references animal symptoms with plant species.

An abundance of excellent color photographs aid in the identification of each plant's toxic features, including the flowers, fruits, pods, and roots. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great info
This book is very specific about what animals each plant is toxic and how toxicity shows up in that animal. It gives tips on how to help that animal and when to call the vet.The opposite page usually shows three views of the plant being talked about - the bloom, the whole plant, and the leaves.
This information is available online, but is much handier in book form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Native Plants of Texas
This is a marvelous book for anyone interested in the native plants of Texas. The color pictures are superb. This book covers many of the common Texas range plants that are not often considered toxic except when eaten by livestock to excess. It also describes the really poisonous ones in detail with clear photos. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
PREFACE The chief interest in Secondary School science, which for a long time was concentrated upon the later years of the course, has recently been shifted to the work of the first year. The leading reason for this is the conviction, which is rapidly becoming general, that the first science of the High School should be fundamental to the entire field of science and should not be any one of the special sciences. It is hard to seehowPhysiography, Physiology, and Biology, the usual subjects of the early High School years, can be taught satisfactorily unless the pupil has previously acquired the elementary physical and chemical conceptions which underlie Physiography, Physiology, and Biology. A proof that this need is felt is the fact that many teachers of first-year science, no matter what their subjects may be called, find themselves obliged, even now, to give a large part of their class time to the presentation of fundamental physical and chemical ideas. The problem involved in the proper preparation of pupils for the study of Physiography and the biological sciences cannot be solved by the transfer of Physics and Chemistry, as formal subjects, to the first year of the High School curriculum. The cause lies both in the difficulty of the subjects themselves and also in the high development which these sciences have reached in Secondary Schools. For Physics and Chemistry are now taught in Secondary Schools in a way and with anequipment far in advance even of College instruction in these subjects a generation ago. Work of this character requires a certain maturity on the part of the pupil, as well as some knowledge of otherHigh School subjects, and it cannot be maintained unless Physics and Chemistry are kept in the later years of the course. While Physics and Chemistry as such ought not to be put into the early years of theHigh School, yet instruction in the simpler principles of these sciences can be given in a first-year General Science course. The most im- portant part of this course will be introductory notions of physical and chemical phenomena, but the course should include much more than this. The problems of modern conveniences and of their relation to scientific discovery, the soil as the basis of agriculture, plants and animals and their ascent from simpler forms to those that are more in such a course. So can complex, all can find a place sanitation, the application of science to community life. When we assign to General Science the scope suggested in the foregoing paragraph, the need of it in the first year of the High School course is self-evident. This is true even ifwe confine ourselves to the staple High School curriculum of a decade ago. But when we remember that this curriculum has been immeasurably enlarged by the introduction of short courses, business courses, do- mestic science courses, agricultural courses, and of voca- tional guidance in all courses, the demand for adequate first-year science instruction becomes imperative, and the argument for its introduction overwhelming. The question that remains is Can such a General Science course be given to large, first-year High School classes, with their varied needs, without special teachers par- ticularly prepared for this subject and without expensive equipment for laboratorywork Theanswer is certainly Yes. To give the answer in expanded form is the purpose of this book. The First Year of Science is written to meet the need of General Science instruction. It consists of three parts the text proper, the laboratory manual, and the Teachers Handbook. The text and laboratory manual may be had either bound together or in separate volumes... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
Perhaps the best book to glimpse an overall picture of a world famous literary group that formed at Oxford University, around the era of World War II.The author, Humphrey Carpenter performed an admirable job weaving the highlights of a University literary club dominated by C.S. Lewis, but also including members such as J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams and other lesser known contributors over a span of three decades. Many of the members had literary works in progressand used this group as a sounding board. The members of the Inklings acting as critics. It was in this time period that Charles Williams perfected his poetical style, and Tolkien wrote most of his "Lord of the Rings Trilogy".This group was responsible for the inspiration and final output of many of its member's best works. The author would tell of the member's part within the group and tidbits of their lives outside the group.Humphrey Carpenter, the author has mastered the technique of balancing the highlights of the Inklings as a literary group and also managed to include a little personal background on each of its members. A quick scan of the authors previous works will show that he could do this because he has written about some of the members individually. The reader will feel that in this one book one has gained a true idea of the nature of the Inklings along with a neat biography of some of its members. The Inklings as a group paralleled the life of C.S.Lewis, The group was at the height of its influence when Lewis`s career was at itspeak and then as different writing styles became fashionable, members of the group alsodied or were replaced. This book is worth the read, one sees the spark of an idea formulated by this group later brought out as a book by one of its members.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informed hobbits. . .
. . .especially those who have read Humphrey Carpenter's excellent biography of the Master, JRR Tolkien, will be particularly interested in this book.It details the lives and works of "The Inklings"...

The Inklings, who included CS Lewis, Charles Williams, Hugo Dyson, Warren Lewis, Owen Barfield (and later Christopher Tolkien) were a group writers, scholars, and friends who met regularly at the "Eagle and Child" pub in Oxford (as well as in Lewis' rooms at college) once or twice weekly for the best part of 30 years. In this biography can be found many delightful anecdotes concerning these men and the remarkable works of literature they penned.

A 'must-have' for any lettered hobbit.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Inklings": An Insightful and Amazing Biography!
If you're interested in the history and lives of famous 20th century authors, this book is definitely for you. "The Inklings" is a delightful peek into the world of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, retelling thelives of several great authors. Among these are C.S. Lewis, author of theChronicles of Narnia series; J.R.R. Tolkien, author of "The Lord ofthe Rings"; Charles Williams, a somewhat less noticed author now adays; and many others.

The group consisted of a rather small membership, but the ideas and input that the men gave to each other in regards to theirwriting probably turned out to be invaluable by the time their works wereready for publication. It was to the Inklings that Lewis first read his"The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe", and Tolkien his "Lordof the Rings" which the group simply called "The HobbitBook".

This has been the best biography I've found on this group ofwriters, and indeed carries more detail about C.S. Lewis than manybiographies dedicated solely to him have. The same is true with Tolkien andWilliams. Even if you're simply a curious fan, wanting to know a little bitmore about the men who created some of the 20th century's finestliterature, this book still delivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A biography of some of the great writers of our century
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were two of the most innovative and popular authors of our century. They, and other, less popular authors (e.g. Charles Williams, Owen Barfield) were friends, and met regularly at Oxfordto read their new works aloud to each other, and to criticize each others'work (as well as to smoke, drink and goof off). The Screwtape Letters andthe Lord of the Rings were developed in this forum. Carpenter, like noother biographer I know of, captures the group spirit of these geniuses, giving the reader exciting insights into their influences upon each other, and into their fascinating, strange lives.Particularly interesting isCarpenter's account of the spiritual dimension of these men -- especiallyLewis, who converted from staunch atheism to a devout Christianity underthe influence of Tolkien and Barfield (among others).I recommend thisbook to any lover of the above-mentioned authors.I think it would also beof interest to many lovers of fantasy, and to any Christian with a literarybent. ...
