Book Description
This new collection of the letters that Lewis Carroll wrote to the illustrators and prospective illustrators of his books affords fresh insights into Carroll's complex character, traces the history of the books that became great classics of the Victorian era, and charts the sometimes tempestuous seas of Carroll's relationships with his correspondents. Carroll, a meticulous artist, made detailed demands upon his illustrators, who included John Tenniel, Henry Holiday, Arthur Burdett Frost, Harry Furniss, and Gertrude Thomson.

Lewis Carroll and His Illustrators reveals the author as an expert in the details of book production in an age in which new technologies repeatedly altered the publishing process. Morton N. Cohen and Edward Wakeling's general introduction to the volume looks at Lewis Carroll the man and touches on his place in Victorian publishing. Each group of letters is preceded by an introduction that includes a brief biography of the artist and a summary of his or her collaboration with Carroll. Many of the letters include Carroll's own sketches as aids to his collaborators. Comparison of these sketches with the artists' final drawings, also included, shed light on the genesis of the illustrations. Some letters from the illustrators to Carroll, also printed here, add greater insight into the process. ... Read more

Product Description
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson—known better by his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll—was a 19th century English logician, mathematician, photographer, and novelist. He is especially remembered for his children’s tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass. By the time of Dodgson’s death in 1898, Alice (the integration of the two volumes) had become the most popular children’s book in England. By the time of his centenary in 1932, it was perhaps the most famous in the world. This book presents a complete catalogue of Dodgson’s personal library, with attention to every book the author is known to have owned or read. Alphabetized entries fully describe each book, its edition, its contents, its importance, and any particular relevance it might have had to Dodgson. The library not only provides a plethora of fodder for further study on Dodgson, but also reflects the Victorian world of the second half of the 19th century, a time of unprecedented investigation, experimentation, invention, and imagination. Dodgson’s volumes represent a vast array of academic interests from Victorian England and beyond, including homeopathic medicine, spiritualism, astrology, evolution, women's rights, children's literature, linguistics, theology, eugenics, and many others. The catalogue is designed for scholars seeking insight into the mind of Charles Dodgson through his books. ... Read more

Book Description

A groundbreaking book, the only volume of first-class reproductions of Lewis Carroll's photographs.

Published on the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), Reflections in a Looking Glass presents Carroll's remarkable photography. Richly illustrated, this important book presents seldom-seen works-most of them formal portraits and staged scenes that combine Carroll's famous childlike sense of play with the Victorian propriety that characterized his age.

Also included in Reflections are selected drawings by Lewis Carroll and by John Tenniel, who illustrated the original Alice books. The central text by Morton N. Cohen, the world's leading authority on Lewis Carroll, provides an in-depth account of Carroll's experimentations in the new medium of photography. His hobby opened the door to many of his "child friends" as well as to leading artistic and literary figures of the day, all of whom came to Carroll's studio to sit for their portraits.

Excerpts from Carroll's diaries combine with Cohen's annotated captions to make this book an invaluable resource. The book also includes a Preface by Mark Haworth-Booth, curator of photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The Afterword is by Roy Flukinger, curator of photographs at the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, Austin, the source collection for much of the material in this extraordinary book.

Book Description
"The Alice Companion presents copious evidence, from firm facts to the slightest of suppositions, which might serve as skeleton keys for the reader eager to pick those cryptic works, revealing what is to be Found There."
—Roy Porter

One of the most elusive and enigmatic writers of the Victorian era, Lewis Carroll has also proven one of the most durable writers of his age, consistently popular with children and adults alike. The Alice Companion opens a window into the mind of Carroll and his muse, Alice Liddell, as they created the mystical, turbulent, and clever world described in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Jo Elwyn Jones and J. Francis Gladstone provide valuable insights into the life and works of Carroll, adding a crucial, new dimension to our knowledge of Alice's celebrated phantasmagoric wonderland. Unraveling secretive jokes in the Alice stories and their derivations from nineteenth-century Oxford life or uncovering the real life models for such figures as the Dormouse, the Ugly Duchess, and the White Rabbit, the book also provides access to Alice in all her disguises: in film, on the stage, as seen by various illustrators, and as interpreted in different countries. Filled with critical, linguistic, biographical, and bibliographical information, The Alice Companion will prove an indispensable reference on this renowned surrealist writer. ... Read more

I have not yet read this entire book, but over the past few months I have used this book many times to help me learn facts about Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidg Dodgson) and I have always found it interesting andhelpful. It could only be better if it were a larger work: perhaps it willbe expanded to two volumes. Editorial Review

Book Description
Lewis Carroll was the pen name of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and other beloved children's books. But before achieving fame as an author, Carroll was a prolific and sophisticated photographer, acutely engaged in the art world of Victorian England. This beautifully illustrated book is the first to examine Carroll's photographs not as the sideline of a celebrated writer, but as the creations of a serious photographic artist-and to demonstrate their importance to the history of photography.

Douglas R. Nickel traces the evolution in thought about Carroll's photography in the period since his death, demonstrating the ways it has been viewed largely through the filter of his literary reputation.Key to this have been certain preconceptions built up around Carroll's attitudes toward children, especially Alice Liddell, the inspiration for his first book and the subject of a number of his photographs. Nickel demonstrates how, by overturning the modern myths that have attached themselves to Carroll's photography, the works themselves can be seen again as they were by their original Victorian viewers. This analysis reveals not only Carroll's signal achievement in the medium, but also a new understanding of Victorian art photography in general.

This volume serves as the catalogue for an exhibition organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, on view from August to November, 2002, which then travels to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (February to May 2003), the International Center for Photography in New York (June to September 2003), and the Art Institute of Chicago (October 2003 to January 2004). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough pictures
I was really hoping for a photography "coffee table" type book when I got this item, but the bulk of it is text, which albeit enlightening, was not at all what I expected. The images themselves are printed quite small, approximately the actual size of a daguerreotype, whereas the book is 10"x11", so I couldn't help but wonder why the pictures were not enlarged more.I also felt there were not enough images; I have no idea how large a body of work Lewis Carroll left for posterity, but it seemed lacking.Overall I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars "andyou, i suppose, dream in pictures." - Tennyson
Nichols has done a fantastic job of collecting some of Carroll's (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's) most memorable images here in his book. Why the title? Perhaps because so many of Dodgson's images are of various states of somnolence... only Nichols can answer this question, or perhaps that Dodgson was a dreamer, for we know this for he was, after all, the force behind the Alice books, Sylvie and Bruno, The Hunting of the Snark (all under the name Lewis Carroll, whereas his photography was under the name Charles Dodgson, his real name.)

Nichols provides a thorough and interesting history here, although note this is not really a book for anyone who is not seriously interested in Dodgson's work as a photographer - if you really want to get to know Dodgson by all means, buy this book!!! Also buy Edward Wakeling's fine book at the same time, The Princeton Collection, which is self-explanatory and more of Dodgson's work, also with some exposition.

A beautiful book, a rare treasure, and a delight for the scholar as well as perhaps, the lay-reader willing to delve fathoms deeper into Dodgson's work.

Well worth the dive ~

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the Carroll collector or as a reminder of the exhibit
This book was meant to accompany the exhibit of the photography of Lewis Carroll that visited the San Francisco Museum of Art in 2002, Houston in 2003, and the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. Each photo has an attached discussion. The introduction to the collection by Director Neal Benezna is short and sweet. The discussions of the history and esthetics of Victoria photography (hagiography, prelapsarian freedom, tableaux vivants, historical reconstructions, imaginary themes, etc.) by author Douglas R. Nickel is useful and accurate as it appeared entirely based on the authoritative biography of Carroll by Cohen and on the scholarly work of Karoline Leach in her book "In the Shadow of the Dreamchild." Like Lewis Carroll's photos, this book has the excellent quality of directness, and an aesthetic purity that springs from a delight in the beautiful. Unfortunately, no nudes appeared in the exhibit and only one made its way into the book (Evelyn Hatch, figure 17, page 66.) That's a pity as it reflects badly on the freedom of artistic expression that Lewis Carroll championed. Another negative: The colored-in photos are not represented. They were interesting for many reasons and in a way anticipated the advent of color photography. I have five of them in my collection. They are truly beautiful and were photographed by Carroll and may have been colored by Carroll himself or by Miss Thompson, his woman friend.

3-0 out of 5 stars following Leach
The whole of the 'biographical' section of this book seems to be taken from Karoline Leach's insane and scurrilous book 'In the Shadow of the Dreamchild', from which it borrows the whole crazy concept of the so called 'Carroll myth'.

But this is still a very fine book and the best analysis of Carroll's art that has been produced to date - a world better than theanxious misinformed and apologetic stance taken by the nervous Roger Taylor. ... Read more

Welcome back to a Wonderland that is as astonishingly new as it is joyously familiar. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is an exciting fantasy novel by Lewis Carroll. His other works include Alice Through the Looking Glass, Phantasmagoria, Sylvie and Bruno, and Rhyme? And Reason? All of which are very creative and imaginative, but his best would have to be Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The book is enjoyed by most, but fantasy lovers and mature young adults seem to really love it.Once you read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, you get hooked and you have to read more.Carroll paints a vivid picture of Wonderland and all of it's crazy inhabitants you find around every corner. Each chapter has a different plot and character even though the complete novel has a pretty well known main idea.Carroll keeps it interesting all through the book. You can really tell that he's trying to get the point across of the world not being perfect and it would be better if people just went with the flow.I would definitely recommend this to my friends. Most of them would enjoy it.It is a really fun, fun book!-Review By Madi Joiner

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern Pictures Get Your Interest
It was the cover picture of Alice and the Rabbit that caught my attention. Out of the many editions of Alice in Wonderland, I would recommend Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. Helen Oxenbury is a talented illustrator who won England's Kate Greenaway Medal for illustrators. She draws Alice like a modern girl very different from Disney's Alice with neat hair, an apron, and the poofy dress. Some of the pictures are coloured and some are not. This is the unabridged story with a bigger font than the others which is good for reading because alot of other novels have very small writing which is hard to read.

This book would be awesome for Christmas, Hannukah and Easter presents or just a present for your family and maybe for yourself because it is paperback. However, it has thicker paper than the fragile pages in other paperback novels.

You might get anothe edition of Alice in Wonderland because you think you're not going to read it again after you finish, but if you get this version, then you will want to read it again and again after you finish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous
It turns out this book is about anagrams;it is not a deep exploration of Lewis Carroll's life.Supposedly, Charles Dodgson AKA Lewis Carroll used anagrams to encode homosexual messages into his work.A quick trip to anagramfun.com convinced me that one can find anagrams for anything in anything.I even found a clever one for the title of this work, which amazon.com won't let me print.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh really?
The author of this book repeats over and over how he set a very strict rule of using all the letters in a phrase for constructing anagrams. Let us now turn to page 40, and I quote, "There are fifty letters in the verse aqnd with eight removed an anagram emerges which I believe represents a manifesto..."

The anagram is then used as one of the epigraphs of the book.

So what was that about a strict rule?

This book is simply filled with bizarre assumptions. The underlying assumption is that Lewis Carroll filled his poems and stories with a variety of anagrams that tell about his homosexuality, his lust for young children, his desire for dalliances with animals, his hate for his father, and on and on. Every incident in a story must mean something sordid. Every phrase must be turned into the most foul and vulgar anagram possible. I'm reminded of the Freud quote; "Somtimes a cigar is just a cigar." Mr. Wallave would have done well to heed this thought.

One possible anagram for this title:
ANGRY SELECTOR ILL OAF WHO
wrote this darn book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Analysis
I was sorry to see the negative review of this book.I read it and thefollowing book with great interest.I've read extensively aboutcriminology, psychology, and serial killers, including all the currentthought on Jack the Ripper.Overall, I think the book makes an interestingcase. And, it's well written and just plain interesting. We have such anostalgic view of Carroll's work, it's difficult to see it challenged. But, that's one reason I like the book & author; a cherished subject isnot often examined critically and when it's well done (as this is), itprovides a new lens to view the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book!
Richard Wallace has based his book upon the incredibly dubious principlethat the secret to all of Lewis Carroll's inner demons can be found bysearching for the most vile anagrams possible in his works. The anagramsare preposterous, the analysis pathetic, and you are left wondering whyanybody would waste their time on such an enterprise. The ultimateinjustice comes when Wallace actually removes eight letters from a fiftyletter verse to make up an anagram that suits his needs! Nobody needs ordeserves this book. ... Read more

Book Description
`This is a book about a well-known writer, Lewis Carroll, and about a little-known subject, the theory of voting' (fromthe Editors' Introduction).
This book has been edited from the manuscripts of the late Scottisheconomist Duncan Black. Shortly after the publication of The Theoryof Committees and Elections Black started to collect materialfor papers and a book on Lewis Carroll's theory of proportionalrepresentation. Black's chapter plans made it clear that the book wasto be in three parts, written by himself, followed by a reprint ofCarroll's Principles of Parliamentary Representation and itsmain sources. Part I is biographical, introducing Lewis Carroll andgiving relevant details of his life. Part II is Black's alreadypublished work on Lewis Carroll. Part III comprises the more detailedarguments about Carroll's reasoning, and Part IV contains reprints ofrare original material on proportional representation by Carroll,James Garth Marshall, and Walter Baily. Taken together, the editorshave provided a complete reference source for the theory of voting andproportionalrepresentation. ... Read more

Book Description
First published in 1865, these endearing tales of an imaginative child's dream world by Lewis Carroll, pen name for Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, are written with charming simplicity. While delighting children with a heroine who represents their own thoughts and feelings about growing up, the tale is appreciated by adults as a gentle satire on education, politics, literature, and Victorian life in general.

All the delightful and bizarre inhabitants of Wonderland are here:the White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat, the hooka-smoking Caterpillar and the Mad Hatter, the March Hare and the Ugly Duchess . . .and, of course, Alice herself - growing alternately taller and smaller, attending demented tea parties and eccentric croquet games, observing everything with clarity and rational amazement. ...
