Book Description
The wittiest of a renowned playwright’s masterful comedies

A master of the comedy of manners, William Congreve was the most elegant of the Restoration dramatists. With piercing accuracy, he depicted the shallow world of “society,” where the right artifice in manners, fashion, and conversation—and money—eased the passage to success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such Wit
Like many reviewers I begin by noting Congreve is not Shakespeare. But he has nearly as much splendor and resonance, in a narrower vein, perhaps, but not less wonderful than much that the Bard wrote.'Love for Love' is witty, urbane and silky smooth. The characters are stiffer than Shakespeare's, but Congreve writes to different conventions and uses them to reach us, his readers or viewers, more personally than one would think possible.Congreve reaches brilliant heights of humor and language. As usual, this Penguin edition is good quality and good value. If you know Congreve through other works, this is the writer at his best.... Enjoy. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description

This study of Congreve's plays locates his work firmly in the context of the literary, theatrical, aesthetic and political ideas of his age. Congreve is shown to be a superb literary craftsman, writing for a specific group of gifted actors who addressed the major social and political issues of his age. All his major works are analyzed in detail with particular reference to "The Way of the World". In addition, there is a brief production history of his plays in performance, as well as an account of critical responses to his work.

Book Description

Returning to Florence on the occasion of his 18th birthday, Aurelian—together with his sworn companion Hippolito—dons his disguise in anticipation of the most famous Florentine ball. Once there, the two are soon separated, and each finds himself paired off with a beautiful—and masked—woman. While Aurelian yearns to learn the true identity of his “love,” Hippolito is mistaken for another and brazenly plays along with the conceit. Chaos abounds as masks are dropped, truth revealed, and, somehow, all ends happily. Dramatist and novelist William Congreve is best remembered for his comedy The Way of the World.

Here Aurelian contracted an acquaintance with Persons of Worth of several Countries, but among the rest an intimacy with a Gentleman of Quality of Spain, and Nephew to the Archbishop of Toledo, who had so wrought himself into the Affections of Aurelian, through a Conformity of Temper, an Equality in Years, and something of resemblance in Feature and Proportion, that he look'd upon him as his second self. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
This book provides an important rereading of dramatic language in the comedies of Etherege, Wycherley, and Congreve.Demonstrating that comic wit of the late 1600s was a potent means by which to question orthodox political, social, and sexual values, this is the first work to draw
significantly on postmodern theories to discuss the historical problems posed by late 17th-century dramatic style. Markley provides a dialogic account of style based on the work of Russian theorist Mikhail Bakhtin and gives revisionist reading of seventeenth-century stylistic theory. ... Read more
