Editorial Review

Product Description
This new edition of Human Impacts on Weather and Climate examines the scientific and political debates surrounding anthropogenic impacts on the Earth's climate and presents the most recent theories, data and modeling studies. The book discusses the concepts behind deliberate human attempts to modify the weather through cloud seeding, as well as inadvertent modification of weather and climate on the regional scale. The natural variability of weather and climate greatly complicates our ability to determine a clear cause-and-effect relationship to human activity. The authors describe the basic theories and critique them in simple and accessible terms. This fully revised edition will be a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate courses in atmospheric and environmental science, and will also appeal to policy makers and general readers interested in how humans are affecting the global climate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of the issues in evaluating human impact on weather and climate
This was a great review of the issues involved in evaluating the impact humans have on weather and climate. It is a complex topic; but it is explained clearly (for me - a non-specialist with an engineering background).

The major issue boils down to the normal variability of weather and climate over a wide range of time scales. This makes it very difficult to demonstrate statistical significance in deliberate or inadvertent human weather or climate modification.

Claims that are not backed by actual fundamental understanding and statistical data may lead to a lack of trust in the scientific method by the public, with resulting poor policy decisions and large funding swings that harm the development of the core science.

Also, I had not understood how significant land use is in it's impact on local weather and the global climate. This book opened my eyes to the extent we have modified the ground cover.E.g., human herding has potentially had an impact on temperature because of the modification of ground cover we imposed to maintain herds over the last 6,ooo years or so.

Overall the book seems very even handed tome, and the fact that it has real references lets one check out areas of interest. And to verify some of the authors statements.

Great introduction to the subject!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fresh and balanced presentation.
I find this book an outstanding introduction to issues related to human impact on weather and climate. Authors elected to divide the discussioninto three main parts, dictated primarily bythe scale ofperturbation. The first part deals with some of the most striking examples of controlledhuman impact on weather: modification of clouds, hail suppression andmodification of tropical cyclones. The presentation is clear, with manyinteresting historical and technical details and is inspirational forpeople interested in cloud processes. The second part shows that humankindmodified already weather and climate at local and regional scale.Suchhuman impacts are: anthropogenic emissions of aerosols and gases, urbaninduced changes in precipitation and weather, and impacts caused by landuse.Authors did a good job is showing that regional scale atmosphericperturbations are by far the most intense and have clear fingerprints inobservations as well as in numerical models. Finally, the third part has abroad presentation of human impact on global climate. This is wellillustrated with climatic effects of anthropogenic aerosols, possiblenuclear winter scenarios, and with the greenhouse theory. I think studentsas well as a broad spectrum of readers interested in Earth sciences willbenefit fromreading this book. ... Read more

Product Description

Life on Earth is critically dependent upon the continuous cycling of water between oceans, continents and the atmosphere. Precipitation (including rain, snow, and hail) is the primary mechanism for transporting water from the atmosphere back to the Earth’s surface. It is also the key physical process that links aspects of climate, weather, and the global hydrological cycle. Changes in precipitation regimes and the frequency of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, severe ice/snow storms, monsoon fluctuations and hurricanes are of great potential importance to life on the planet. One of the factors that could contribute to precipitation modification is aerosol pollution from various sources such as urban air pollution and biomass burning. Natural and anthropogenic changes in atmospheric aerosols might have important implications for precipitation by influencing the hydrological cycle, which in turn could feed back to climate changes.

From an Earth Science perspective, a key question is how changes expected in climate will translate into changes in the hydrological cycle, and what trends may be expected in the future. We require a much better understanding and hence predictive capability of the moisture and energy storages and exchanges among the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, continents and biological systems. This book is a review of our knowledge of the relationship between aerosols and precipitation reaching the Earth's surface and it includes a list of recommendations that could help to advance our knowledge in this area.

Product Description
Originally published in 1974, this volume deals with economic and social change in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Japan, by means of a case study of the cotton trade in Ōsaka and the surrounding Kinai region. The development of the Ōsaka cotton trade is studied to illustrate the growth of new kinds of commercial institutions to regularize trading patterns and the changing interaction between merchant groups and the Tokugawa bakufu. A picture is presented of the changing interaction between urban and rural merchants and the ability of cotton cultivating villages to organize and contest urban merchant and governmental attempts to limit their commercial activities. The result is a revised interpretation of the effective coercive powers of the Tokugawa bakufu with respect to socio-economic change. Evidence is offered to illustrate the ability of urban and rural traders to assert their own interests in opposition to Tokugawa efforts at economic controls. ... Read more
