Mr. Van Torp had not been on deck; in fact, he had not been seen at all since he had disappeared into his cabin a quarter of an hour before the steamer had left the pier. There was a good deal of curiosity about him amongst the passengers, as there would have been about the famous Primadonna if she had not come punctually to every meal, and if she had not been equally regular in spending a certain number of hours on deck every day.At first every one was anxious to have what people call a 'good look' at her, because all the usual legends were already repeated about her wherever she went. It was said that she was really an ugly woman of thirty- five who had been married to a Spanish count of twice that age, and that he had died leaving her penniless, so that she had been obliged to support herself by singing. Others were equally sure that she was a beautiful escaped nun, who had been forced to take the veil in a convent in Seville by cruel parents, but who had succeeded in getting herself carried off by a Polish nobleman disguised as a priest. Every one rememberedthe marvellous voice that used to sing so high above all the other nuns, behind the lattice on Sunday afternoons at the church of the Dominican Convent. That had been the voice of Margarita da Cordova, and she could never go back to Spain, for if she did the Inquisition would seize upon her, and she would be tortured and probably burnt alive to encourage the other nuns. This was very romantic, but unfortunately there was a man who said he knew the plain truth about her, and that she was just a good-looking Irish girl who... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Story of idealized love and a wicked murderer

This is a novel about a murderer and a peasant girl who saves the life of one of his intended victims. Folco Corbario marries a wealthy widow, and all of society suspects he is out for her money. But years go by and all goes well between the two. Her son, the frail and sickly Marcello, is in love with Aurora. Seeing his chance, Corbario poisons his wife and attemps to beat Marcello to death during a storm. But Marcello is rescued by the peasant girl Regina, who nurses him back to health. Marcello falls in love with her, proposes marriage to her, but she, knowing of Aurora, nobly rejects him. Marcello also comes to realize his love for her is only motivated by a desire to repay her kindness in tending to him during his recovery. Regina becomes ill, and Aurora visits her; they both acknowledge the love they have for Marcello. Regina dies (ever so conveniently) knowing that Marcello would have married her had Aurora not had previous claims. Corbario is caught and sent to prison.

As in most of Crawford's novels, there are good things and bad. The disappearance of Marcello is handled intriguingly, though the introduction of the poison as the murder weapon is too pat. Regina, however, is the best thing about this novel; she is the kind of character that Crawford relished in creating.Self-sacrificing, idealistic, honest, but still a life-and-blood character and never just a romanticized figment of the imagination, Regina captures the reader's attention; when she is not on the scene we miss her and long for her return. Without her, the novel would be forgettable; with her, it's a pretty decent novel.

Since bores exist and there is no other name for them, the strong word has some right to pass into the English language. The old gentleman belonged to the unconscious and self-complacent variety of the species, which is, on the whole, less unbearable than certain others. Generally speaking, it is true that people who are easily bored are bores themselves, but there are many very genuine and intolerable bores who go through life rejoicing and convinced that their conversation is a blessing and their advice a treasure to those who get it.Bores always have one or two friends. Simon Darche had found one in his daughter-in-law and he availed himself of her friendship to the utmost, so that it was amazing to see how much she could bear, for she was as constantly bored by him as other people, and appeared, indeed, tobe his favourite victim. But no one had ever heard her complain. Day after day she listened to his talk, smiled at his old stories, read to him, and seemed rather to seek his society than to avoid it. She was never apparently tired of hearing about John's childhood and youth and she received the old man's often repeated confidences concerning his own life with an ever-renewed expression of sympathy." I simply could not stand it for a day! " exclaimed Dolly occasionally. " Why, he is worse ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Marzio's Crucufix
Marzio, a silversmith, is a socialist who hates much in "modern" Italy, but mostly he hates his brother Paolo, who is a priest. He hates the church. Yet he has made many artifacts for his brother and the church. He has a beautiful crucifix that he's made many years before, and through it he gains redemption with his brother, whom he thought of killing. The ending is too quickly played out and the reasons for his hatred are not developed, but this is one of Crawford's better novels. ... Read more

One writer, for instance, gravely tells us that Venice, like England, grew rich by usury and the slave trade; another, whose good faith cannot be doubted, assures the world that the two great mistakes which led to the final downfall124of the Republic were the 'Serrata del Gran Consiglio,' which excluded the people from the government, and the unjustifiable sack and seizure of Constantinople. It would be hard indeed to produce any satisfactory proof of the former statement; for though the Venetians undoubtedly supplied themselves and one part of Italy with white slaves from the East, and although the Republic at times lent money at interest to poorer governments in distress, yet I do not think that these sources of income were ever to be compared with that derived from a great and legitimate commerce, and from less justifiable but not less lucrative conquest. As for the second statement, it is enough to consider the length of time which elapsed between the taking of Constantinople and the closure of the Great Council about a hundred years later, say in 1300, on the one hand, and the final destruction of Venetian independence in 1797 on the other. When, in history, an effect is separated from its supposed cause by an interval of... ... Read more
