Description:
Over the past century, trees have encroached into grass- and shrublands across western North America. These include Douglas-fir trees (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) encroaching into mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. vaseyana (Rydb.) Beetle) from stable islands of savanna in southwestern Montana. Our objectives were to quantify the relative area occupied by mountain big sagebrush and grasslands versus Douglas-fir savanna in the Fleecer Mountains of southwestern Montana today and in the past, and to identify the historical role of fire and other factors in maintaining this distribution. To do this, we reconstructed a multicentury history of tree establishment and surface fires from 1120 trees sampled on a grid of 50 plots covering 1030ha of a modern mosaic of sagebrush-grasslands and Douglas-fir trees. We compared these histories to time series of climate and land use, and to spatial variation in topography and soil moisture availability. Beginning in the mid-1800s, Douglas-fir trees established in areas in which trees did not persist historically. In 1855, less than half the plots (42%) had trees whereas today, most plots do (94%). This encroachment was synchronous with the cessation of frequent surface fires, likely caused by the advent of domestic livestock grazing, and perhaps by the start of several decades of relatively dry summers. Douglas-fir savannas historically occurred on fire-safe sites more often than did sagebrush-grass. Our inference that frequent fire excluded Douglas-fir in the past was supported by the results of a simulation model of fire and associated vegetation dynamics. In the continued absence of fire, mountain big sagebrush and grasslands in southwestern Montana are likely to become more homogeneous as Douglas-fir trees continue to encroach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful stuff
This is an amazing book!!!I love the portion that is by Jack Christianson, the chapters done by the other author are good but not as powerful. So worth buying!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed To Inspire You!
This book is brimming with thought-provoking messages that inspire the reader to build their testimony by going straight to the scriptures. Jack Christianson and Doug Bassett are a winning combination as they join forces to remind readers to be 'believing and behaving' Latter-day Saints, not just those who go through the motions. It's a wake-up call of why we're here, and what this life is all about.A sure-fire read for anyone who has gotten a little too comfortable with their testimony, and needs a fresh charge of their spiritual batteries. Excellent reading! The authors use scripture, counsel from prophets, and motivating stories to bring home the message of the power of the Book of Mormon, and how to use that power in our lives. Two thumbs up! ... 44. The Discipline of Teams: Innovative Project Teams
by Jon R. Katzenbach, Douglas K. Smith
 Paperback: Pages (1994)

Editorial Review

Product Description
Groups don't become teams just because that is what someone calls them. Nor do teamwork values alone ensure team performance. So what is a team? How can managers know when the team option makes sense, and what can they do to ensure team success? In this groundbreaking March 1993 article, authors Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith answer these questions and outline the discipline that defines a real team. The essence of a team is shared commitment. Without it, groups perform as individuals; with it, they become a powerful unit of collective performance. The best teams invest a tremendous amount of time shaping a purpose that they can own. They also translate their purpose into specific performance goals. And members of successful teams pitch in and become accountable with and to their teammates. The fundamental distinction between teams and other forms of working groups turns on performance. A working group relies on the individual contributions of its members for collective performance. But a team strives for something greater than its members could achieve individually: An effective team is always worth more than the sum of its parts. The authors identify three kinds of teams: those that recommend things--task forces or project groups; those that make or do things--manufacturing, operations, or marketing groups; and those that run things--groups that oversee some significant functional activity. For managers, the key is knowing where in the organization these teams should be encouraged. Managers who can foster team development in the right place at the right time prime their organizations for top performance. ... Read more

Description:
Douglas-fir growing on the western slopes of the Oregon Coast Range are experiencing an unprecedented outbreak of Swiss needle cast (SNC) caused by the fungus Phaeocryptopus gaeumannii. SNC can produce substantial physiological stress in host trees by reducing needle gas exchange and enhancing premature needle abscission, resulting in slower growth. Based on the frequent link between stressed trees and insect activity, we explored the potential influence of SNC on Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, activity and some tree physiological parameters that may influence beetle attraction (i.e., constitutive ethanol and monoterpene contents of woody tissues) and host susceptibility (i.e., wound-induced resin flow). Woody tissue ethanol concentrations, wound-induced resin flow, and beetle attraction were all reduced as SNC severity increased. Although trees affected by SNC attracted fewer beetles, the number of attacks did not decline, the attacks were more likely to penetrate to sapwood depth, and the galleries were longer than in healthier trees, most likely due to a weakened oleoresin defense. However, there have been no current reports of increased Douglas-fir beetle activity on SNC stressed trees, and no rapid increases in beetle population numbers, or outbreaks associated with these diseased forests. SNC stressed trees may remain free from attacks because pioneering beetles have difficulty recognizing them as being stressed with low ethanol concentrations. Furthermore, beetle populations may not be increasing since stressed trees appear unsuitable for reproduction, as no eggs, larvae, or adult beetles were observed in excavated galleries on any attacked trees. However, if large volumes of host materials became available as a result of some catastrophic event (e.g. wildfire or wind-throw), and the beetles can reproduce successfully enough to increase population densities then the potential for a devastating outbreak of Douglas-fir beetle in SNC stressed trees might be exacerbated because they have compromised oleoresin defense systems, and may be killed with fewer beetle attacks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and loosely written
This book is so concentrated on harnessing the knowledge of 17 marketing experts that they forgot to hire an expert writer to make it easy to understand for the student. They talk around many definitions without clearly defining the object of study. Case studies are haphazzardly thrown at the reader and important concepts are vaguely described and with uneccessary complexity. I hope next time they write a book one of their experts is a writer. I feel like I am back in World Literature reading something from the Middle Ages only this time I can't go on the internet for an interpretation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very loosely written and unorganized
This book promises to bring to us the best and the brightest in marketing by drawing on the knowledge of 17 experts. Unfortunately, they have proven a law in economics known as the law of diminishing returns. As additional units of a variable resource (marketing experts) are applied to a fixed resource (this book),at some point, the returns that can be attributed to the variable resource will decline. This is precisely what has happened. This book is written in a haphazzard format throwing definitions and case studies at the student in a loosely written hard to understand format. Many of the definitions seem to talk around the object of study instead of clearly defining it. I have talked with many students and they all have the same sentiments. Before you rate my review, I suggest that you read one chapter from this book and you will find that I have been very kind towards the author/authors. I would prefer to read a marketing text book from just 1 marketing expert that knows how to write a textbook. This is marketing not world literature. I am an A business student and I shouldn't need to struggle to understand the concepts in this book. The best example I can think of would be the chapter on consumer behavior. VALS is glazed over with little insight on the value of this highly reputed psychographic study. Check out the section on alternative evaluation in the same chapter. Compensatory and noncompensatory models of consumer alternative evaluation are quickly thrown out to the reader with a few vague examples. Even after taking calculus I am amazed at the complexity with which these authors present a simple subject like marketing. You are probably purchasing this book because it is required reading for your marketing class. There must have been some kickbacks somewhere to push this book. Next time they write a marketing book I hope that one of their experts is a writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of two worlds
This book combines the knowledge of excellent scholars of marketing in a clear and structured format which is accessible toundergraduates. In addition, the cases and other teaching materials provide excellent support.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Another Graduate Marketing Book
This book is no better than any of the other graduate level marketing books that are available. You might think that since this book has 15 authors it might have something that books with only 3 authors lacks. But,if you thought this you'd be wrong. This book offers nothing new and itsextremely high price makes it even less appealing. ... Book Description

This completely revised standard for object database management systems is an essential guide to future trends in objectoriented and database technology. It represents an important industry consensus on component technology for database products and languages that enables wide acceptance and adoption of object database technology.

ODMG 2.0 provides for object databases what SQL provided for relational databases by ensuring the portability of applications across platforms and products. The goal of the standard is to combine programming languages and database systems into a single environment, providing better performance and more powerful representation for complex database applications. ODMG 2.0 draws upon related work represented by ANSI SQL92 and the OMG Object Model and Interface Definition Language.

Major enhancements to version 2.0:-ODMG has defined a new binding for Sun's Java programming language that combines the safety and pure objectorientation of Smalltalk with the more powerful data and syntax of C++, as well as security and automatic program transfer on the Internet.-The ODMG object model has been totally rewritten and expanded to provide a comprehensive specification of object database semantics across many programming languages.-ODMG has defined a standard external form for data and the data schema, allowing data interchange between databases.-Updates and improvements have been made to the chapters on C++, Smalltalk, and Object Query Language. ... Description:
Paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.) is routinely chemically or mechanically weeded from Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco) plantations to increase conifer productivity, but these practices are controversial because of unknown effects on forest health and diversity. This study examined effects of paper birch density reduction treatments on productivity and disease incidence of Douglas-fir saplings in the southern interior of British Columbia. Five paper birch density treatments (0, 400, 1111, 4444 stems ha^-^1 and an un-thinned control of >7000 stems ha^-^1), where paper birch was manually cut at the root collar in 1999, were replicated on four sites in a randomized block design. After 2 years, Douglas-fir survival did not differ significantly among treatments, but where Armillaria ostoyae (Romagn.) Herink was present in untreated stands, mortality due to root disease increased significantly with increasing paper birch thinning intensity. Mean diameter increment and height:diameter ratio of Douglas-fir improved where paper birch was completely removed or partially thinned compared with the control. Mean light transmittance and soil moisture content increased with decreasing paper birch density, but Douglas-fir foliar N status was unaffected. Our results suggest that Douglas-fir growth can be improved and root disease incidence minimized by thinning paper birch to 4444 stems ha^-^1 in young mixed stands, but that subsequent release treatments may be necessary to maintain Douglas-fir growth rates. ...
