Editorial Review

Book Description
Douglas Southall Freeman (1886-1953) remains one of the greatest historians of the Civil War. His monumental biographies, including Lee's Lieutenants and the Pulitzer Prize-winning R. E. Lee, combined intellectual fervor with meticulous research and a graceful prose style. He received a second, posthumous Pulitzer Prize for his six-volume study of George Washington, still the definitive work on the first president. Freeman's literary accomplishments are all the more remarkable considering that he was also editor of the Richmond News Leader from 1915 to 1949 and made twice-daily radio news broadcasts.Freeman's influence was not confined to Virginia or the South, nor was his expertise limited to the Civil War. During World War I, Pres. Woodrow Wilson read Freeman's daily reports about the conflict in Europe. Freeman also acted as friend and advisor to world leaders like Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower.Until now, no biography of this important figure has existed. With Douglas Southall Freeman,first-time author David E. Johnson brings the man and his achievements to light. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed reading this biography
I highly recommend this book. It's easy to read, well researched and balanced. It belongs on the bookshelf of every Civil War Buff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read on a Fascinating Person!
The author grabs the reader's attention at the very beginning of the book when describing Freeman's daily schedule (typically from 2:30 am - 8:30 pm), a schedule that would tire the typical person after only a few days.

Johnson reveals Freeman's interesting background as the son of a Confederate soldier whose interest in writing about history was conceived at a gathering of Confederate veterans at the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Virginia years after the Civil War ended. The author includes the excellent relationships Freeman enjoyed with his family (with the exception of his son), newspaper associates, academic peers, and other areas of his interesting life. These revelations personify the definition of a true Southern gentleman!I might add too - Freeman was also a vocal and determined opponent of racism.

I was particularly inspired by the author's description of Freeman's extremely disciplined (though not necessarily always rigid) life. While Freeman had a fulfilling and extremely busy life and was often away from his family, he did manage to spend time with them when possible.

An excellent and highly enjoyable read of the eminent biographer of Robert E. Lee and George Washington.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
David Johnson has done us all a great favor by finally writing a biography of the most amazing "Doc" Freeman. The son of a Confederate soldier, Douglas Southall Freeman's life is a study in self-discipline and perseverance. Freeman was a man who crammed 4 careers into one life - Pulitzer (One for the biography of General Lee and one post-humously for George Washington) winning author, newspaper editor, teacher and broadcaster. Ever since learning of Freeman many years ago, I'd wondered why no biography had ever been written of him. Freeman was a man that was faithful to his calling, to serving his fellow man and to serving his God. The book should be in every history lover's library. ~ Richard G. Williams, Jr., editor of "The Maxims of Robert E. Lee" to be released in November. ... Read more

Book Description

The provides the instructor with suggested answers and responses to the Application Activities at the end of each chapter.

Linguistics is much more than a study reserved for academicians. Linguistics has real-life applications to effective teachingnow more than ever. With the increased emphasis on phonemic awareness and phonics in the teaching of reading, teachers need to understand how language works. When teachers are familiar with basic linguistic concepts, they are better prepared to make decisions about how to teach reading, spelling, phonics, and grammar to all students, including English language learners.

In this unique linguistics course-in-a-book, David and Yvonne Freeman explain essential linguistic concepts in a thorough, but manageable manner and show the connections between linguistic theory and classroom practice. They demonstrate that the greater a teacher's understanding of basic language structures and processes, the easier it is to make good decisions on tough topics like phonics, spelling, and grammar. They present:

  • the basic concepts of linguistics in everyday language
  • examples and activities that apply linguistics concepts to teaching reading, spelling, phonics, and grammar to all students, including English language learners
  • end-of-chapter applications that link linguistic theory and classroom practice.
Understand more about how language works, then use that knowledge to help your students learn. Turn prescriptive approaches into linguistic investigations. Get yourself and your students hooked on linguistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great linguistic book for teachers
Freeman & Freeman have hit a great niche with their book. I don't want or need, a complex linguistics book in the style of Chomsky. Freeman & Freeman take language research and package the relevant "real-world" findings so they will be of use for teachers. Although my interest is for English as a Second (ESL) teachers, I believe every teacher is concerned with literacy, and Freeman & Freeman's book covers what teachers need to know concerning phonics v. whole word instruction, spelling, and grammar. Freeman & Freeman seem to belong to the Stephen Krashen school of language and reading. This is a plus for me, but for Krashen-haters, it probably wouldn't be, and they should look elsewhere. This is "baby" linguistics book--you won't get a section on Chomsky's generative grammar here. I think it would be a good companion volume along with VanPatten's "From Input to Output"--which is a slim volume solely concerned with second language acquisition and has the same conversational tone--and--this is important--their teaching advice and philosophy meshes. ... Book Description

Struggling older English learners pose a real challenge for educators. Some of these students are new arrivals with limited or interrupted schooling. Others have been in and out of ESL and bilingual programs in this country since kindergarten, but have never succeeded academically. How can teachers help older students who lack academic content knowledge and English language proficiency catch up with their classmates? Yvonne and David Freeman provide four research-based keys for closing the achievement gap.

three teachers have put this theory into practice to reach their older English learners. These teachers organize curriculum around themes, use predictable classroom routines, and scaffold instruction in a variety of ways. The clear examples from their classes will help other teachers implement effective practices for their older English learners.

Closing the Achievement Gap features:

  • the four keys for school success for older English learners
  • clear distinctions among the types of older English learners in our schools with examples of students from each category
  • a thorough discussion of the kinds of language proficiency older English learners need
  • a review of the latest research on effective practices for older English learners
  • detailed descriptions from the classrooms of three teachers, including thematic units they have developed, their daily routines, and the strategies they use to scaffold instruction
  • professional extension activities to help readers apply the information in this book to their own educational settings.

For teachers and teacher educators, program directors, resource personnel, and administrators, this book offers both the research and practice schools need to develop effective programs to educate struggling older English learners.

The content of this book is not the problem, it is its poor organizational structure. It is redundant and organized in an unhelpful way, so that the read focusses on the repetitive statement(s), leaving the seemingly tidbits of research and theory to get lost. It's like having a simple base beat up too loud and dragging on throughout a whole album. They could have summed up the content of this book in 2-3 short articles with greater success. The content, however, was helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for ESL teachers!
I bought this book to complete some research for my thesis and it turned out to be the best resource I have seen in a while.I have shared the book with all my colleagues and fellows graduate students.I would highly recommend this book to any and all teachers and particularly those who teach language learners.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Closing the Achievement Gap", August 22, 2002
This book, "Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited-Formal-Schooling and Long Term English Learners", is an excellent resource for teachers of older English learners with limited formal schooling or English learners with more conversational than academic fluency.Yvonne S. Freeman and David E. Freeman, professors at the Graduate School at Fresno Pacific University, describe in detail these two types of students and provide four main ideas to help teachers meet the academic needs of these struggling students. The Freemans' also cite research on effective teaching practices and describe three teachers working with these particular students in a multi-grade, a middle, and a high school classroom. All three teachers are successfully implementing research proven theories in their classroom practices to help close the achievement gap.
Overall, the Freemans' did a good job in examining each point thoroughly. The format was concise, comprehensible, and the strategies described can easily be used with my Newcomer students.I thought it was a good idea to present three different perspectives of teachers working with a range of age groups. It demonstrated that the theories and strategies presented can be effective across grade levels.
I recommend that school administrators and professors of teaching candidates also read the book for the strategies presented and for the valuable research on second language acquisition. The academic gap of struggling English learners will only continue to widen if educators and administrators do not become more knowledgeable in this area. ... Book Description
This compelling novel centers on three couples whose relationships are thwarted by family strife, repressed emotions, strong-willed pride, and religious self-righteousness.

Pembroke begins with a heated political argument between Barney Thayer and Cephas Barnard, the father of Barney's betrothed, Charlotte Barnard. The angry Cephas throws his prospective son-in-law out of the house and, because of his immense pride, Barney refuses to apologize, even though it means he cannot marry Charlotte. The Thayers and Barnards become locked in a clash of wills, and the broken engagement reverberates throughout the village, ultimately affecting the relationships of two other couples in the town. After years of seemingly interminable suffering, all of the ill-fated lovers are eventually united, but the reunions are bittersweet.

In sharp contrast to the romantic literary tradition, Pembroke vividly depicts characters doomed to inherit the unhappiness of their ancestors. This dramatic and realistic portrayal of rural nineteenth-century New England life and Puritan ethos will reintroduce modern readers to a significant regionalist woman writer. ... Read more

    Book Description

To publish a second edition of a book does not simply mean an editorial success . . . but also, and most important, that the foundations and underlying philosophy of the book have caused a considerable influence on its readers.
      - TESL-EJ
The first edition of Between Worlds provided such an excellent grounding in the theories and practices of second language acquisition that when it won MLA's Mildenberger Award it was cited for its treatment of the "issues that concern teachers of languages at all levels and in all contexts." Tens of thousands of educators discovered how to expand the learning potential of their students by considering how the world inside the school interacts with outside social contexts.

Now, seven years later, the schooling of English language learners has become far more complex and political. So the Freemans have updated their classic text to address new trends and issues related to the teaching of multilingual students. The second edition features:

    • clear, accessible review of second language acquisition theories and research in the fields of second language acquisition, bilingual education, and second language teaching methodology - now completely updated
    • new insight into the social and cultural factors that affect second language acquisition and related current research and theory
    • discussion of the role of grammar in second language acquisition
    • the content teachers need for certification to teach second language learners - such as CLAD/BCLAD
    • unparalleled practicality, with lots of new classroom examples, strategies, thematic units, student work, and language stories
    • ideas for promoting cultural sensitivity
    • logical organization that could easily serve as a basis for a course syllabus
    • practical suggestions and useful resources for working with parents of language minority students.

I am using Between Worlds in a Literacy Methods for Elementary Teachers class.Although my class is not geared toward teaching English Language Learners, we are using this book under the premise that what is helpful for English Language Learners is also helpful for native English speakers. The book is clearly written and full of both theory and anecdotes. This is much more helpful than if it were to only contain only theory or only anecdotes. The authors use their own experiences as well as experiences from their graduate students to make this book feel relevant to any teacher or perspective teacher. ...
