Editorial Review

Book Description
For quite some time critics have been intrigued by the unique rhetorical strategies of Heinrich Heine's and Giacomo Leopardi's narratives. This book breaks new ground in the field of Heine and Leopardi scholarship by providing a critical analysis of similarities between the rhetorical strategies of Heinrich Heine's text Ludwig Berne. Eine Denkschrift and Giacomo Leopardi's 'Il Cantico del Gallo Silvestre' and the midrashic process. In their texts, Heine and Leopardi interweave biblical references, historical events, and personal encounters with their narrative and juxtapose them to a contemporary situation, thus presenting the reader with their interpretation of an existential experience. These narratives are midrashic in inviting multiple interpretations of equal validity. In an age imbued with optimism, Heine and Leopardi discredit the whole tradition of the eschatological messianic message of redemption and negate the Enlightenment's belief in the renewal of society. ... Editorial Review

Book Description
Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), one of the best known and most controversial German writers of the nineteenth century, has been the subject of intense critical debate. Heine's lyric poetry ranks second only to Goethe's in popularity and is known world wide in musical settings. He is also known for his stories and travel sketches, his writings on political, social, and cultural developments in Europe, and for essays on literature, religion, and philosophy.Peters's study records the stormy development of Heine's critical reception from his own time down to the present. As a Jew living in Paris, an outspoken critic of both repressive political policies in Germany and the stifling influence of the Catholic church, and the author of the most famous satirical poem in the German language, Deuschland. Ein Wintermärchen, Heine engendered the wrath of the conservative critics of his day, while progressive critics, particularly those supportive of his emancipatory ideals, came to his defense. Since his death, Heine criticism has continued to be partisan in tone. Twentieth-century Heine criticism has mirrored Germany's historical development, from the nationalistic fervor of the Wilhelminian era, through the tolerance of Weimar, the anti-Semitic frenzy of the Third Reich, the postwar period of competing critical views in East and West, to the final decade of the century and a period of renewed and intense critical interest.George F. Peters is professor of German and Chair of the Department of Languages and Linguistics at Michigan State University. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This volume collects the papers presented at a conference that took place in Berkeley, California, in October 1997 in honor of Heinrich Heine's two-hundredth birthday. The theme of that conference was Heine's identity, which was formed and reformed, revised and modified, in relationship to the politics, religion, and nationalism of his era.Several speakers focused on Heine's Jewish identity and most contributions touched on his relationship to the politics of his era.The resulting essays offer a more differentiated understanding of Heine's predicaments and choices, as well as the parameters placed on him by the exigencies of the time. What this volume therefore achieves is not a radically new vision of Heine, but one that recognizes the ambivalences and vacillations, as well as the development and consistency, of his complex identity. ... Over one hundred poems pepper the text.

Heinrich Heine (17971856) was one of the most significant German Romantic poets. Many of his poems were set to music by Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Brahms.

Peter Wortsman is an author and translator. His translations from the German include work by Robert Musil, Peter Altenberg, and Adelbert von Chamisso.

Book Description
The Wisdom of the Silenus plays around the motif of the misery of human life. Omnipresent in literature and art in the first half of the 19th century, it is the antitype and spur to that "Banquet of life" with which Heine motivates the aim of his social and political commitment. This study is the first to place Heine's work comprehensively within the context of the literary and artistic scene of the age in Paris. ... Read more
