"Just as I was getting strong enough to walk, and was beginning to think of making my escape, a band of five or six fellows, armed to the teeth, came in, and made signs that I was to go with them. It was evidently an arranged thing, the girls only were surprised, but they were at once turned out, and as we started I could see two crouching figures in the shade with their cloths over their heads. I had a native garment thrown over my shoulders, and in five minutes after the arrival of the fellows found myself on my way. It took us some six hours before we reached our destination, which was one of those natural rock citadels. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read
George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is largely forgotten today, but prior to World War II he had many young fans of his adventure books. Muscular fiction at its exciting best, Henty's stories follow a brave and upright young man through a series of adventures during great historical happenings (usually great happenings of British history). This book is a collection of five of Henty's short stories, ranging the world from India to China to the wilds of the California Gold Rush. Exciting stories from another era, this book is a cracking good read. I highly recommend it to you!

In case you are interested, the five stories are:

Bears and Dacoits - When his young niece disparages the size of the bears of India, Colonel Hastings spins out a tale of one of his hunting expeditions. It seems that not only are the bears dangerous, but so are the brigands who haunt the same hills.

The Paternosters - Young Tom Virtue is proud of his yacht, and when a storm begins to brew, he puts his passengers aboard a steamer and sets out to weather the storm at sea. But, there is an adventure heading towards all of them.

A Pipe of Mystery - When the children ask the old Colonel for a ghost story, he instead tells them a story of second sight. It seems that in rescuing a fakir, the Colonel was given a view of the future, one of mutinying sepoys...

White-Faced Dick - It's 1849, and the Gold Rush is on. But among all of the tough and pitiless man there walks a boy with a heart of gold, White-faced Dick.

A Brush With The Chinese - With Britain at War with the Chinese, H.M.S Perseus is looking for pirates. When chance for action comes, Percy Adcock, the youngest of the lads on the ship, stows aboard a rowboat, so he can have a part in the excitement. However, before he knows it, Percy finds himself experiencing more excitement than he ever wanted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Check the publisher of "The Young Buglers" before your buy
The version from General Books LLC is scanned in using OCR, and as the publishers website states, there's been no editing to catch errors, there's numerous typos and the book has no illustrations or index. Very poorly formatted and poor quality overall. If you do the "Look Inside" thing, you'll see a message that reads "Just so you know...This view is of the Paperback edition (2007) from BiblioBazaar. The Paperback edition (2010) from General Books LLC that you originally viewed is the one you'll receive if you click the Add to Cart button at left." Reason being that the General Books LLC version is so poorly formatted that if you saw it, you wouldn't even consider buying it. Look for a better edition (The CreateSpace edition is a far better version of this book).

Henty's books are almost uniformly good, especially for younger boys, and they deserve better than the garbage produced by General Books LLC.

As the copyright has come off Henty's books, there are numerous reprints by small publishing companies specialising in Print on Demand versions of these older books. Many of these publishers either do poor quality OCR scanning OR they do a straight scan and produce a facsimile version - some of these are OK, some are very bad. Your best bet when you're looking at these books is to either find a genuine publisher that does a good job (check reviews for there books very carefully as Amazon more often that not associates reviews with the book title rather than the publishers version so you can't be sure the review is actually for the book/publisher you're looking at) or look for an older second hand copy, which, while used, will at least be free of typos and garbage and in a font you can actually read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Get your young boys to read GA Henty!
Great author from the turn of the last century, tells stories of adventure.Historical fiction, told through the eyes of a young man in his formative years.Who needs goosebumps trash when there are classics like this out there practically free???

5-0 out of 5 stars True History
This book, although fiction, is true history. It was written by Henty in 1894. It's a classic adventure novel right up there in the ranks of Swiss Family Robinson. Henty was an outstanding writer of his time. It's veryeasy to get lost in this book, I'd be suprised if anyone could read itwithout putting it down. It's full of references and dialect of days longgone by. I want to jump into a time machine and go live with Tom for awhile and quit worrying about traffic and work. I am fortune enough to ownan original 1894 hard copy of this book that was given to me by a familyfriend and will cherrish it for ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is really exciting and informative.
This book presents a factual side of western history in an exciting way! That is very rare these days. From the first few pages, you are drawn in by young Tom's determination to join his uncle in Colorado and the dangers, joys, and sorrows he encounters along the way. I read this book in fivedays; it is an impossible put-down! All those who love history or justgreat stories will love this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Henty is amazing at capturing your interest and at the same time giving you a history lesson. Knight of the White Cross is so far my favorite of his books. There are pirates, battles, adventures, and young maidens to protect. I highly recommend this book, especially to junior high or high school boys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful storytelling
England is embroiled in the War of the Roses. Young Gervaise Tresham is sent from his war torn homeland by his father to join the Knights of St. John. Initially, this order was a semi-religious organization with its members taking vows of obedience, chastity, and poverty for the purpose of ministering to pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. With more incidents of pilgrims being attacked, robbed, and enslaved by the Moslems, the Hospitallers quickly changed, out of necessity, to a great military organization.

Proceeding to the stronghold of Rhodes, Gervaise is eventually appointed commander of a war galley. The war galleys of the Knights of St. John patrolled the Mediterranean which was infested by Moorish corsair pirates.

Tons of adventure, fast paced story tellign and great attention to historical detal make this yet another great Henty read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fabulous tale from Henty
This is an awesome book. One will feel that they are there, fighting the corsairs or seeing the great fortresses at Rhodes. The scenes are vividly described, and the whole story is incredibly exciting.Gervaise is the ideal knight - strong, brave, loyal, and willing to give his life for Christendom. One feels like they know him in real life, so vividly is he described. The Turks can be pictured ad well, with their huge cannons and keen scimitars. The adventures of Gervaise are very perilous, and sometimes it seems there is no way out.Yet, there is a way, and he always finds it somehow or other. His exploits are phenomenal. He does everything from defending the fort of Rhodes to impersonating a Turkish prisoner, all in the name of the order. There are a few words in the story that most middle school students wouldn't know, but these don't interfere much with understanding the story as a whole. There is some violence in this book, but nothing else that would be considered repulsive. This book is a great read for anyone who likes action, adventure, history, or the Middle Ages. I give it an A.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a hero!
Gervaise's father wishes that his son will grow up to be a Knight of the White Cross, and so Gervaise leaves his dying mother and travels to Rhodes. When he arrives at Rhodes he never dreams of all the adventures he will be undertaking, and the excitement he will be involved in.First comes the rescuing of Ricord and Santoval, after which the Grand Prior knights Gervaise and his comrade, Ralph, which is a great privilege for the boys. Some time later, after visiting the house of Signor Vsados, Gervaise mentions to Ralph that he did not like the looks of the Greek who had also been at the Vsados household.Ralph laughs at him, but Gervaise's suspicions are aroused even more when he sees the man talking to a slave of the Order. After reporting to Sir John Kendall Gervaise suggests he disguise himself and go among the slaves, to try to find out if a plot is being arranged. What will he find?Gervaise has many more adventures, and also a little romance, for Claudia De Forli bestows her colours on him.Gervaise also sets an example by the boy-galley that he was put in command of. It is the only galley ever to have only young knights appointed to it. In the end Gervaise takes part in the Siege of Rhodes, which was a bloody affair.Don't miss reading this story of a gallant Knight of the White Cross! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For Name and Fame, Or Through Afghan Passes
The first half of the book is pretty boring; a juvenile adventure story, both predictable and un-exceptional, and has nothing to do with Afghanistan. It is not until the second half that the story takes up the matter suggested in the title -- the British invasion of Afghanistan in the 1880's. The adventures of our hero now assume an almost extraneous importance, as the story becomes more of a factual account, or narration, of the military operations and engagements of the British expeditions inside Afghanistan.
These descriptions, written almost like a historical report, are indeed fascinating and educational, from a strictly military standpoint. And I imagine they would have a particularly pertinent value to anyone involved in our own nation's ongoing efforts against the Taliban in Afghanistan. For these reasons, I found this book to be indeed worthwhile, and recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Super Kid!
Subtitled "A Tale of the Spanish Main" this is an enjoyable book with lots of history easy to digest and learn. Ned Hearne - a brave, intelligent teen from Plymouth meets English privateer Francis Drake (not a "Sir" yet) and his adventures begin. Along with three friends (with each of whom he has an improbable, but stirring adventure) Ned takes along through the Elizabethan years and events leading up to the Spanish Armada and the subsequent fact of Britannia becoming the preeminent sea power. History can be fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really cool!
This is a great book! The adventure never lets up, and thecharachtersset good examples of manilness, dignity, and honor. I highly recommend it!It's a wonderful book to read aloud as a family or just by yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories for boys, or how to go to war with the right spirit
In the early 90s, I came into possession of what I took to be a very nearly complete collection (I have 75 volumes), mostly in first or other early editions, of the British writer G. A. Henty. Henty died in 1902 orthereabouts, having written his last books about the actions which tookplace in the war opposing English troops and Boer commandos. And that washis formula, first and foremost to record in print the historical eventsassociated with any British military venture from the early Middle Agesonwards. The other characteristic of his writing was, that it was intendedfor consumption by boys and as such it was typical of a genre that was welldeveloped in the late Victorian period. Henty's prefaces invariably start,"My Dear Boys," and he developed a sort of intimacy with his youthfulaudience that eventually made him something of a best selling author at theend of last century. It is interesting to note that he is still in print,or was until very recently.

Most of his books have a two-fold purposetherefore; recounting (mainly) military history and inculcating a certainnotion of the standard of behaviour to be expected from a future youngsubaltern. No doubt, of the thousands of officers from British and colonialregiments who went to the front in 1915 and dashed themselves bravelyagainst the German wall, a great many had had this form of early Hentytraining. Having read so many of them, one can scarcely recall the actualdetails of plots and sub-plots. Yet on the details of the history involved, there is much to learn, as Henty was a meticulous man who recorded as fullyas possible (and some times too fully, it must be admitted, with respect tothe endless movements of particular regiments into the line) the events hedescribes. He is equally good at sea as on land and has written someclassics of maritime literature, particularly "Under Drake's Flag," and "Cochrane the Dauntless." So while Henty can hardly be expected to have awide audience today, for those who find him to their taste, it must be saidthat the material, most of which will have to be located second hand, isnot wanting. ...
