Accordingly, when at four o'clock A.M. Maggie, who was partially awake, heard in the distance the shrill scream of the engine, as the night express thundered through the town, she little dreamed of the boxes, bundles, trunks, and bags which lined the platform of Hillsdale station, nor yet of the resolute woman in brown who persevered until a rude one-horse wagon was found in which to transport herself and her baggage to the old stone house. The driver of the vehicle, in which, under ordinary circumstances, Madam Conway would have scorned to ride, was a long, lean, half-witted fellow, utterly unfitted for his business. Still, he managed quite well until they turned into the grassy by-road, and Madam Conway saw through the darkness the light which Maggie had inadvertently left within the dining room! ... Read more

Very pleasantly to Dora did the remainder of the winter pass away. She was appreciated at last, and nothing could exceed the kindness of both Mr. and Mrs. Hastings, the latter of whom treated her more like a sister than a servant, while even Eugenia, who came often to Rose Hill, and whose fawning manner had partially restored her to the good opinion of the fickle Ella, tried to treat her with a show of affection, when she saw how much she was respected. Regularly each day Dora went to the handsome library where she recited her lessons to Mr. Hastings, who became deeply interested in watching the development of her fine intellectual mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite book as a child
I read this book when I was in fourth grade.I don't know where I got the book - it was old then (in the '60's.)The story is about a poor family who sail to America to make a better life. The parents get sick and die and the children are sent to the poor house. The pretty sister gets adopted by a rich family and the plain sister is left in the poor house and only later is taken in by a kind widow. The plain sister is the main character and she suffers from slights from her pretty sister who pretends not to know her. However in the end, the plain sister ends up being accomplished and kind and cultured while the pretty sister ends up being spoiled and pampered and despised. It is the classic Cinderella tale retold in a less magical manner, however just as appealing and pleasing to the sense of justice.I told the story to my daughter when she was young because I could not find the book. Then a few years ago I looked the book up on Amazon and found an original copy, which I treasure. ... With a blanched cheek Mr. Browning read this letter through--then tore it into fragments, wondering much who gave her the information. There were no spies about his premises. Rosamond would not do it, and it must have been his sister, though why she should thus wish to annoy him he did not know, when she, more than any one else, had been instrumental in placing him where he was. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Two sisters, light and dark.
One of the most common returning themes in Mary J. Holmes novels is that of two sisters--one of whom is superficially more beautiful but is selfish and cold-hearted while the second sister is less beautiful but is warm and giving. Tempest and Sunshine makes that struggle central to its plot by pitting the sweet and guileless Fanny against her scheming sister Julia.

Most reminiscent of Bad Hugh, Tempest and Sunshine continues the Holmes tradition of slightly skewing the expected storyline. Her bad sister is not all bad, and Holmes makes clear that the blame for her badness is not entirely hers.

Be aware that the book was set in pre civil-war south and it engages in some possibly unpleasant apologies for slavery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I adore this book.
I'm so glad that this has been reprinted. It's not great literature or anything, but it's a really enjoyable late nineteenth century novel.

Tracy Park tells the story of the Tracy family (crazy Frank, crazier Arthur, spiteful Dolly, arrogant Tom, and dimwitted Maude) and a girl called Jerry Crawford. Some of them love her, and some of them hate her, but only one of them has a suspicion of just how closely connected to their family she is.

it's an enjoyable, undemanding sort of book. Buy it. Read it. And don't judge Tom Tracy too harshly unless you really think you'd act differently. ... Read more
