Book Description
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was born in Königsberg in Prussia. It is often claimed that he is the greatest philosopher in the history of modern philosophy, if not its entire history.

This collection brings together many of the most influential criticisms of Kantian philosophy, from his own time to the present day. Volume I is historical, including Kant criticism from Schiller to Buchdahl. It contains some previously untranslated material. Volumes II, III and IV include recent essays on Kant, covering the major aspects of his work. Volume II examines the Critique of Pure Reason, Volume III explores Kant's moral and political philosophy, and Volume IVdeals with the Critique of Judgement and the relation of the third Critique to the other two. The volumes will be of great value to anyone with a serious interest in Kant's philosophy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars O Great One
Allison is among the foremost contemporary interpreters of Kant and this collection, spanning both the German sage's theoretical and practical philosophy, is a gem. In the year I spent trying to master Kant, beforesubmitting to a mild form of dementia, Allison stood on my night table as aconstant source of support and clarification, as well as an object of rageand sometimes just as a place to put cups. I can't recommend this bookenough. ... Read more

Book Description
An unabridged interpretive reading by Albert A. Anderson of Kant's essay "What is Enlightenment?" and his Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals in modern English. The two works included in this volume articulate the fundamental principles of Kant's ethical world view. Written in the period between the American Revolution and the French Revolution, they challenge all free people to think about the requirements for self-determination both in our individual lives and in our public and private institutions. Running time: 4 hours and 30 minutes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Immanuel you inform my sense of self...
Although today his thoughts are commonplace, and his observations apparently mundane...this is only due to the power of his thoughts over time.Kant is truly a turning point for human thought....one of the first clear view of what thinking actually is...

It was Kant who let us know, that we are the creators of our own reality, not simply the puppets of an independent world. When I explained to my teenage daughter, that the reason the guy in front of us seemed to be driving so slowly...was because we were in a hurry...this was Kant's influence on my understanding of my self.

As far as this particular audio program goes, I would give the presentation a B generally, and an A for a philosophy program.Dry but with oasis of depth and clarity. Its a good listen...especially when your driving, and can't fall asleep.LOL

Book Description

This book presents a new interpretation of Kants theory of knowledge that emphasizes the coherence and plausibility of his doctrine of transcendental idealism. Many interpreters believe that Kants transcendental idealism is an incoherent theory. Some have attempted to respond to this charge. Yet, as the author demonstrates, the interpretations that seek to vindicate Kants theory continue to be committed to some claims that evoke the charge of incoherence. One type of claim which does so is connected to the contradictory notion of subjective necessity. The other type of claim is related to the supposition that knowledge of the reality of appearances entails knowledge of the reality of things in themselves. The interpretation presented in this book does not involve any of these claims. Part One of this book presents an analysis of Kants concept of a priori knowledge and of his response to skepticism about synthetic a priori knowledge that specifies the content of such knowledge without invoking the notion of subjective necessity. Part Two presents an account of the non-spatiotemporality of things in themselves that does not entail knowledge of the reality of things in themselves. Part Three presents a new interpretation of transcendental synthesis, the transcendental "I" and of the role of transcendental self-consciousness in synthetic a priori knowledge which emphasizes the originality of Kants account of self-knowledge and subjectivity. The arguments presented in this book relate Kants ideas to current debates in epistemology, metaphysics and the philosophy of mind in a way that underscores their invaluable relevance to present-day philosophical discourse.

This book offers first time translations of the initial (1781-1789) critical reactions to Kant's philosophy. Also included is a selection of writings by Kant's contemporaries who took on the task of defending the critical philosophy against early attacks. This collection, which includes a glossary of key terms and biographical sketches of the critics on both sides of the debate, is a major addition to Kant scholarship and should be seen as a companion volume to the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant. ... Book Description
The Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is one of the most important works of moral philosophy ever written, and Kant's most widely read work. It attempts to demonstrate that morality has its foundation in reason and that our wills are free from both natural necessity and the power of desire. It is here that Kant sets out his famous and controversial "categorical imperative", which forms the basis of his moral theory.

This book is an essential guide to the Groundwork and the many important and profound claims that Kant raises. The book combines an invaluable introduction to the work offering an exploration of these arguments and setting them in the context of Kant's thinking, along with the complete H. J. Paton translation of the work, and a selection of six of the best contemporary commentaries. ... Read more

Book Description
This work offers a clear exposition of evil and moral regeneration as they appear in Kant's late work Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone. Michalson examines a doctrine of "radical evil" which he sees as strongly resembling the Christian doctrine of original sin.In the author's view, Kant compromises his position as a result of this throwback to the Christian tradition, which is at odds with some of the basic tenets of the Enlightenment.Kant is thus seen to be deeply ambivalent in the philosophy he puts forward when he talks about divine action, on the one hand, and human autonomy, on the other. ... Book Description
Kant is often portrayed as the author of a rigid system of ethics that suits perfectly rational beings but not human beings. The twelve essays in this collection by one of the world's preeminent Kant scholars argue for a radically different account of Kant's ethics. They explore an interpretation of the moral philosophy according to which freedom is the fundamental end of human action, but an end that can only be preserved and promoted by adherence to moral law.Paul Guyer radically revises the traditional interpretation of Kant's moral and political philosophy and shows how Kant's coherent liberalism can guide us in current debates. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Guyer's Kant on Freedom, Law, and Happiness
I found this to be an excellent treatment of Kant.I disagree with the previous reviewer that Guyer mistakenly identifies Kant with Rawlsian theory.Guyer's points are well made and supported with compelling arguments.Definitely worth reading for anyone interested in the subject matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Guyer, Kant and the Law
Guyer's analysis of the some of the deep infrastructure of the works of Kant is truly deft. With great facility, he moves among the Groundwork, the First, Second and Third Critiques, and some of Kant's notes to lend new insight to the four-fold versions of the Categorical Imperative. I believe these insights are valuable. In particular, he shows how the FKE and the FA are related to and supplement the FUL. He also elucidates that inner and outer freedom are the fundamental values in the Kantian system, values which adherence to the CI preserves and promotes.

However, regarding his analysis of the Doctrine of Right, he is seriously mistaken that the move from the state of nature to the civil condition is some kind of bargain that promises each participant a piece of the pie, so to speak. This move to the civil condition is not a bargain, but a duty based on a categorical imperative to secure rights that are only provisional. The motive for the move is to secure a system of intelligible possession not to secure a particular amount of property. His analysis is Rawlsian and make the same error as Rawls in identifying this theory with that of Kant's.

Despite this drawback, this book is a must for those interested in deepening their understanding of the Doctrine of Right and the Doctrine of Virtue. ... Read more

Book Description
In this seminal contribution to Kant studies, originally published in 1982, Karl Ameriks presented the first thorough survey and evaluation of Kant's theory of mind. Ameriks focuses first on Kant's discussion of the Paralogisms in the Critique of Pure Reason, and examines how the themes raised there are treated in the rest of Kant's writings. It is demonstrated that Kant developed a theory of mind that is much more rationalistic and defensible than most interpreters have allowed, a theory that is of great significance for the understanding of his philosophy as a whole.Kant's Theory of Mind is now brought up to date with a substantial preface and postscript, as well as many additional references to the literature. This expanded edition will enhance the book's continued value for today's Kantians and philosophers of mind. ... What can we know? What should we do? What can we hope for? Best known for his Critique of Pure Reason, German thinker Immanuel Kant based his philosophy around these fundamental questions of human experience. His most intriguing writings are excerpted here, including his The Doctrine of Virtue, Critique of Practical Reason, The Moral Law, and other seminal works, each revealing the critical analysis that keeps Kant among the most influential of modern philosophers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caution about date of publication
I am an author. I know the pitfall of ordering books mistakenly identified by publishers.

So, I am writing, strictly speaking, not a review but a caution. The date given for this book, in the product information section, is 2007, but I think that is a reprint date for a book originally published in 1902 in German and translated into English (by J. E. Creighton) and published in 1963. That means the historical information about Kant might be quite a bit out of date. Timing of course does not affect Paulsen's interpretation of Kant's philosophy, which might be the main value of the book for some readers.

I probably will buy the book. (I am giving the book a 5 rating simply because it has historical interest to me and I am glad it is available.) Paulsen's book was the summary of Kant's philosophy that Ayn Rand used as a basis for her critique of Kant's philosophy. She saw Paulsen as a Kantian, but as an honest commentator on Kant. (Robert Mayhew, Ayn Rand's Marginalia: Her critical comments on the writings of over 20 authors, p. 40.)

Stephen Palmquist's Kant's System of Perspectives is similar, not in content, but in the fact that Palmquist is a Kantian and an honest (and clear!) commentator. I do recommend Palmquist's works on Kant, but sadly they are out of print and very expensive in used form. ... Read more
