MLK: The Martin Luther King tapes is the first Audio CD I've ever purchased.I am a new student of our great orators, and Martin, from what I've read, is the best. One of my only regrets concerning Dr. King's speeches is that I haven't been able to hear them all as spoken by his eloquent, yet powerful oratory style. This Audio CD has eliminated my concern.I can now hear Dr. King anytime I want to at work. I feel like I'm right there, listening with his audience. If this product is any indication of what to expect from future Audio CD's by other great orators such as JFK, FDR, and even Winston Churchill, then count me in! The only reason for the four stars as opposed to five stars is due to the rudely shortened eulogy of Robert Kennedy during Dr. King's funeral. There should have been more of it. ... Read more

Book Description
Dedicated to documenting the life of America's best-known advocate for peace and justice, The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. breaks the chronology of its series to present King's never-before-published sermon file. In 1997 Mrs. Coretta Scott King granted the King Papers Project permission to examine papers kept in boxes in the basement of the Kings' home. The most significant finding was a battered cardboard box that held more than two hundred folders containing documents King used to prepare his celebrated sermons. This private collection that King kept in his study sheds considerable light on the theology and preaching preparation of one of the most noted orators of the modern era.
These illuminating papers reveal that King's concern about poverty, human rights, and social justice was clearly present in his earliest handwritten sermons, which conveyed a message of faith, hope, and love for the dispossessed. His enduring message can be charted through his years as a seminary student, as pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, as a leader of the Montgomery bus boycott, and, ultimately, as an internationally renowned proponent of human rights who saw himself mainly as a preacher and "advocate of the social gospel." Ten of the original and unedited sermons King submitted for publication in the 1963 book Strength to Love and audio versions of King's most famous sermons are the culmination of this groundbreaking work. ... The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement is well documented in prose, but for sheer emotional power, nothing can compare to the pictures from this era. It's a challenge for a writer's words to match the force of Bob Adelman's photographs in this book, but novelist and essayist Charles Johnson rises to the task in his treatment of King's life and death, as well as the heroic struggle of African Americans in the United States. Johnson, the author of Middle Passage (which won the 1990 National Book Award), offers an exceptional counterpoint to the stirring images with the depth and weight of his essays and captions. "How soon we forget that King was not only a civil rights activist," Johnson writes, "but also this country's preeminent moral philosopher, a spiritual aspirant, a father and a husband, and that these diverse roles--these multiple dimensions of his too brief life--were the foundations for his singular 'dream' that inspired millions worldwide."

Adelman intimately captures King's background, from his comfortable middle-class upbringing in Atlanta to the dashing figure he cuts with his wife, Coretta, to his steady ascendance as a forceful preacher thrust into prominence during the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955-56. We cringe at the sight of King being photographed as a criminal and at the horrific treatment many blacks endured by racist Southern police. The triumph of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, which he gave at the 1963 March on Washington, is beautifully detailed, along with his acceptance of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. We also see a weary King, weighed down by assassination attempts, harassment, inner-city riots, and the Vietnam War. Toward the end, King displays an eerie sense of calm in the photos taken just days before his death--particularly in an April 3 photo taken at the Mason Hall in Memphis the night before his murder, where he declared that he'd "been to the mountaintop." King's legacy is lovingly chronicled in this impressive book. --Eugene Holley Jr. Book Description
"A magnificent photo album of a magnificent man in magnificent times."-Susan Brownmiller, New York Times Book Review

"Through rich words and stirring black-and-white images, the authors take us on an emotional journey.... There have been many books written about Dr. King, but this one is among the best."-Ebony

Receiving accolades everywhere when it originally appeared in hardcover in 2000, this searing documentary volume chronicles and celebrates the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., one of our country's giant figures, covering events from the 1955-56 Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott to the slain civil rights leader's funeral in 1968. Hundreds of images by many of the finest photographers of the 20th century are combined here with a moving text to detail the pivotal events of King's public and private lives. He is seen here as husband and father, powerful preacher, martyr for the cause of racial justice, and, finally, American icon-a truly great man whose international stature has only grown since his death. AUTHOR BIO: Charles Johnson is a literary critic, essayist, and author of the National Book Award-winning novel Middle Passage. The recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, he teaches writing at the University of Washington in Seattle. Bob Adelman is one of the foremost photographic chroniclers of the civil rights movement. His photographs have been published in LIFE, The New York Times Magazine, Paris Match, and other publications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Superb!!!
The words of 1998 MacArthur Fellow Charles Johnson's ccoupled with the poignant photographs of Bob Adelman climax in this excellent literary work that chronicles the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The wonderful photographs and literary prose compliment each other beautifully throughout this masterpiece, detailing the life and democratic stuggles of King. Beginning from the early childhood of Mr. King to his untimely death,
Adelman's photographs depict a very young King with his family. It provides insight into his his upbringing and illustrates the foundation that culminates into the life of the great civil rights leader. It continues to depict his educational pursuits and ultimate marriage to the lovely Coretta Scott.

The books carries the reader through the voyage as a young King rises to prominence as a preacher, his continued quest for racial equality, and mainly
his persistent call for agapic love in conjunction with nonviolence. Also, shared in this tome is intimate photographs of King's time spent with his loving family and information about King's life that may not be well-known.

Although nearly 300-pages, this book capitvates the reader from cover to cover. All in all, Johnson and Adelman are to be commended for their efforts! This liteary piece is nothing short of superb!

Book Description

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is one of the most celebrated figures of the twentieth century. A crusader for nonviolent social justice, he led African Americans in their demands for equality through peaceful protests during one of the most tumultuous times in recent history.

Set against key moments in the civil rights movement, here is the story of the powerful, eloquent spiritual leader and his belief that nonviolence could be used to overcome racial discrimination.

Walter Dean Myers's moving narrative and Leonard Jenkins's compelling paintings portray a vivid and striking image of the man who moved American society closer to the ideals of freedom and fairness. Dr. King's dream that all Americans would be judged by their individual actions and character is one we still cherish today.

4-0 out of 5 stars great balck history month read
This is a book about Martin Luther King Jr.We learn that he stood for peace not violence. He wanted everyone to be treated equally no matter what color their skin was. Some people did not like the way Dr King went about things. They sent him mean letters and he even ended up in jail.Dr King never gave up or gave in to violence. He always stood strong in his beliefs.

I learned a lot from this book.I knew a little about Martain Luther King Jr but this story taught he much more.

This book would be helpful to elementary students when writing reports Martin Luther King Jr.There is a helpful time line with dates of important events listed in the back of the book. This is a great book to read during black history month.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning about One Man's Dream
Walter Dean Myers has created a good introduction to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his book I'VE SEEN THE PROMISED LAND.Through the story, children are presented with his basic biographical information beginning with his birth in 1929 and ending with his assassination in 1968.In addition, children are briefly introduced to the Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks and Malcolm X.Myers also shares some of the highlights of Dr. King's work in the movement and some of the personal sacrifices he made to do the work.

Overall, this book serves as a pleasant introduction to the life of Dr. King. The illustrations were enjoyable and really enhance the story. My biggest criticism is that it seems to define the Civil Rights Movement as a whole and Dr. King's life as synonymous. While Dr. King did have a major impact on the Civil Rights Movement, it was much bigger than King alone and included countless other heroes and sheroes throughout the nation. This book is by no means comprehensive, but as an introduction the author doesn't do a bad job presenting the information in a way that very young (his target audience) children will be able to grasp.

This little board book is the most beautiful and perfect book on Martin Luther King, Jr. I have ever seen as Dr. King's message is kept pure, untainted, clear and focused. The colors are soft and gentle, the words simple and easy. It is a perfect introduction to Dr. King, his life, his work as well as an introduction into human values such as respect and equality. It is never too early to begin educating children on such matters nor too late for adults to refresh their memories on these core matters especially as so many are waving flags: remember what those flags represent and the lessons of Dr. King. This little book can help any age do so...even you!

3-0 out of 5 stars not so good
i have the greatest respect for Dr. King. i expected this book to take a philosophical view towards measuring a man--- a philosophical view that emphasizes more on a certain methodism that values reason over passion. now, i understand Dr. King is a preacher and strongly believes in christianity. this book is a sermon. therefore, as someone who accepts christianity but not really endorses it to visit the church every sunday, i wouldn't have bought this book if i knew what perspective it would take. so this book is an excellent measure of a man, but it would be more preferable if it takes a different central figure other than God to measure a man. at least to me. its a very thin book by the way, more like a long essay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small and Handy
Small and slim, fits in the back of pants pockets just fine.

About 50-pages, with 10 or so pages in the middle solely having various photographs of King and followers.

I read it in about 15mins, taking my time.

Buy it used for the best deal. Paying full price for something so small that could probably be downloaded off the internet seems a bit much.

It is very thought-provoking, as all of King's work, and is worth reading. Would make a great gift for anyone.

I recommend "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." for a more complete work of Dr. King.

5-0 out of 5 stars To give this as a gift to every young man...
This is an excellent and treasurable little gift book to give to young people. While simple and humble at first glance, it gives some deep truths about life and how we can live responsibly.I've given copies of this to others, hoping that somewhere along their path in life they might open it and find just what they need to make good and true decisions in their lives and dealings with others.I hope it will never go out of print!

5-0 out of 5 stars must read
This is a small and excellent book. The second half is outstanding.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit too short
King is as eloquent as always, and I knew this was a short book, but it was filled with a lot more pictures than I expected and it was more purely theological than connecting theology with his nonviolent philosophy.I'd go for something else if you want to read King. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars what?
Meet Martin Luther King, Jr. Landmark Books, by James T. De Kay
104 pages, Biography

Meet Martin Luther King, was a very interesting book.I know that this book has been used by the Princeton Review to help teach nonreaders to read. While the topic is great and the effort is even better, I feel that this may not be the best book for such an important activity. The book is clearly stated as being for a fourth grade audience; however the sentence structure is more along the line of a pre-school level. The use of punctuation is horrible and just flat out wrong.I don't know if a comma was used in the entire book.I just know that if I had a fourth grade son or daughter, or a high school senior for that matter, I would prefer they learn sentence structure and language a bit better than this book portrays.
As previously mentioned the ideas portrayed in this book are wonderful. The struggles that were going on at the time are exemplified through the great efforts of Martin Luther's life long battles to help eliminate discrimination. The portrayal of the life of Dr. King, while shown through a fine lined pen, is very useful in illustrating the major points of his life.I feel the purpose of the book is met, and the story is told. Also, the fact that the book is readable to a fourth grader is helpful in teaching the nonreaders of our country.
Depending on your purpose as a reader this may or may not be the book for you.It is a one sided illustration of the life and a poor level of writing at the same time.I would hope that there are better and more complete illustrations of Martin Luther King Juniors' life.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!I can't believe what my child learned.
We have read a lot of biographies, but this one was different.I don't really know why.My son, 6, was captivated by this book.He now devours EVERYTHING he hears about Martin Luther King, Jr.My son learned about a man like himself in many ways who experienced difficulties and fought unfair laws just because of his color. He also learned about a man named Gandhi and the influence he had on Dr. King.I was so impressed by the impression that this book made on my son.And he recognized scenes from the book when we watched the movie "KING."Rarely does any book have this much impact on a young child. It definitely deserves 5 stars.

Book Description
Martin Luther King Jr.'s"Letter from Birmingham Jail" is arguably the most important written document of the civil rights protest era and a widely read modern literary classic.Personally addressed to eight white Birmingham clergymen who sought to avoid violence by publicly discouraging King's civil rights demonstrations in Birmingham, the nationally published "Letter" captured the essence of the struggle for racial equality and provided a blistering critique of the gradualist approach to racial justice. It soon became part of American folklore, and the image of King penning his epistle from a prison cell remains among the most moving of the era.Yet as S. Jonathan Bass explains in the first comprehensive history of King's "Letter," this image and the piece's literary appeal conceal a much more complex tale. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One MLK Jr. Holiday, ISee More Need for Peacemakers!
All who lived during those momentous years of Southern turmoil of 1960's were greatly impacted by the laws of desegregation of the white churches and schools. As one renews his/her commitment to religious and social justice, it brings into focus our recent tragedies of Ruwanda, Iraq, Thailand, and Indonesia! Upon my own return to Professor Bass's BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, I easily conjure up my perennial pictures of his accounts of eight white Ministers, their churches and families being turned inside/out or upside/down by Southern racial injustice.

In Bass's easy reading, documented, and dramatically illustrated account of eight white ministers' appeal for law, order, common sense, before and after the reception of MLK Jr's, "Letter From Birmingham Jail," I was transported back to 1963; Into mid-1965 when Earl Stallings became both my Pastor and my Good Friend! In spite of persistent segregationist pressure, not once did Earl consider turning black vsitors away from First Baptist Church of Birmingham. "If the people came to worship," Stallings wrote days after the incident "we had no Christian justification for closing our doors...if they came to provoke an incident, we were determined to have no part in this action."

Since 1954 the FBC maintained an open-door policy for any black visitors. From an early distinguished Pastor J T Ford, followed by Guy Sloan and Grady Cothen and Earl Stallings they reaffirmed that policy! Yet on the morning after they welcomed the first black visitors, newspapers all over the country printed large photographs of a cheerful Earl Stallings shaking hands with the black visitors. They included both the NEW YORK TIMES and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution!

From my perspective or from Prof. Jonathan Bass's perpspective, it appears that he gave a deeper account of the introspective thoughts or words of Earl Stallings, than from the other white ministers! Since MLK's Letter referred to outstanding persons' writing: Ralph McGill, Harry Golden, James McBride Dobbs, Ann Braden, Lillian Smith, and Sarah Patten Boyle, it seems that the author added deserving comments beside the eight pictures of those Ministers. Next to Earl Stallings picture he quoted his recent sermon: "We hear the call of truth, of righteousness, of justice, but we are not men enough to heed its challenge!"

From 1965 thru 1975 in his next pastorate, I often needed Earl's commitment to equality and social justice, as when I chose music of Fred Waring's "Easter Story of Black Spirituals" over Church dissent: "It's getting much too close for those Black threats of violence in our streets of Marietta on Good Friday, April 8th of 1968!" That same evening for the Good Friday Worship we had a full house with a few black families present! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

4-0 out of 5 stars A Special Delivery Letter
It was just a letter written by a man in jail, on behalf of his race, attempting to address the social injustice of the time-right?Wrong!Martin Luther King's Letter From the Birmingham Jail is much more compelling, and the circumstances surrounding its final composition more complex than the average person knows.Ostensibly written to the eight white clergymen of the embittered and embattled steel city, it was intended for a much wider audience-namely the media and the American public. Blessed Are the Peacemakers provides the reader with individual profiles of the eight and their struggles of conscience as they saw an old social order collapse. What has been taken as the almost spur-of-the-moment reflections of Martin Luther King, in jail for civil disobedience, turns out to be a document much longer in the making and more calculated in its delivery. This disclosure in no way detracts from its rightful place in American folklore or its power in fueling Civil Rights Movement. Rather, it helps us understand the care with which the deep conviction of racial rights was presented. The book is not an apology for the eight clergy, some of whom were more progressive than others, but it does provide much needed insight for the serious student of history into the complex struggles, powerful emotions, and vitrolic attacks perpetrated on even the most moderate voices of the white clergy. What it does not do, of course, is speak of the many white clergy of lesser rank who paid a much higher price for their fight for justice for their black brothers and sisters.Still, to read about these eight leaders, (Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Jewish) and their struggles is instructive. As an Alabama-born, white clergy expatriate from that period, marginally involved in the Civil Rights Movement, I hung on every word. These are reflections that should help black and white readers alike better understand this turbulent period. Statements from the eight white clergy as well as King's Letter are included in the appendix. ... Read more

Leadership motivational speaker Donald T. Phillips, who has previously drawn organizational lessons for modern businesses from the careers of Abraham Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, turns to civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model. A discussion of the Montgomery bus boycott, for example, draws out such principles as "Set goals and create a plan of action" and "Involve the people." More effective as a self-help book for business than as a biography, it does provide a useful introduction to King's life.Book Description
What does it mean to be a leader? How does an individual create an unstoppable organization, reshape a struggle, a competition, or even a society? Why do we listen to one man's voice and ignore others? In the history of leadership in America, no one has galvanized a time, place, and people more forcefully than Martin Luther King, Jr.

Now Donald T. Phillips, the author of Lincoln on Leadership and The Founding Fathers on Leadership, has written an illuminating examination of the leadership style of Martin Luther King, Jr.A man who articulated a vision, crafted a strategy, and took defeats and turned them into victory, Dr. King and his life's work offer us powerful lessons that can apply to life, business, and any endeavor.

While the American Civil War formally ended slavery, it did not end segregation or racial discrimination. It took nearly 15 years of activism, led by the nonviolent movement organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to complete the transformation. The final result was the elimination of federal and state-sanctioned segregation and discrimination. This book chronicles the tenets of leadership that Dr. King practiced during the American Civil Rights Movement. From mastering the art of public speaking to persuading through love and nonviolence, from encouraging imaginative new solutions in changing times to preaching hope, optimism and the power of dreams, this study of Dr. King's leadership offers a definitive and inspiring modern-day example of leadership at its best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional narrative of a great leader
Donald T. Phillips does an exceptional job at narrating the life of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He does an incredible job in tying in the aspects of Dr. King's life as a man, and activist together with the principals of Leadership.

He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.

I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.

I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.

The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.

It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for aspiring leaders
Donald Phillips did a wonderful job of telling the story of Martin Luther King Jr. from his childhood to his death, and connecting it all to a marvelous leadership style.Being a student of leadership studies and a fan of Martin Luther King Jr., I chose this book as a study of both subjects.Having read it, I have to say I learned more about leadership from this book than any other I have read. However, I am no longer a fan of MLK......... he is now a hero of mine.

As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership.Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.

MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech was voted the most electrifying public address of the twentieth century. It takes some kind of a leader to give that kind of a speech. Donald T. Phillips presents the ideals of leadership that Martin Luther King Jr. followed in an overview of the history of the civil rights struggle. Phillips describes the techniques King used at various stages of the civil rights battle. He also shares King's comments on leadership. Many of the principles will be quite familiar: listen to learn, lead by being led, awaken direct action, encourage creativity and involve the people. However, the book is especially interesting when it demonstrates how King put these principles into practice. This well-organized, well-written book is clear, direct, and easy to read. While it is written for the general public (especially for African-Americans and those interested in civil rights), we [...] find this book interesting for all managers and executives, particularly those who like to learn the lessons of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book!
I am a student and a teacher of leadership skills, and I have found no better example than Martin Luther King Jr.This book combines the history of King's movement, but also chronicles the qualities which made King great. The text is easy to read, and fascinating.Martin Luther King, Jr. On Leadership should be required reading for anyone who hopes to impact their world. The famed Harvard psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, who studied moral development, named King as one of the greatest moral thinkers in history.Read this book, and you will understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring book on leadership
I picked up this book simply thinking it would be a great story about leadership, but the underlying history of Martin Luther King is riveting as well. The leadership stories translate well to business and personal leadership--they speak to (all) people wanting to be part of a higher, unifying mission. If you like to "mark-up" the margins withthoughts keep a pen handy for this one.Its a book I talked about withcolleagues and family more than any other I've read. ... Read more
