Product Description
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many areprovided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.

Product Description
Francis H. Leggett & Co. were Importing and Manufacturing Grocers, and their name can still be found somewhere in the food distribution business. Once, though, they were suppliers of tea, and very proud of that. Their object in publishing this and other books was to bring themselves and their goods into closer relation with consumers at a distance from New York; and incidentally, to provide readers with interesting information respecting the food which they eat and drink. This volume contains a wealth of information on tea -- its origins, cultivation, properties, and nature. Bon appétit. . . ! ... Read more

Product Description
This edition is written in English. However, there is a running Swedish thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of Tea Leaves. This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your Swedish-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Swedish, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to Swedish-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Product Description

'The cherry-blossoms of Yoshino, which will bloom with the spring - If we cult the tree open to find them, where would they be?' SAMURAI ZEN: the Warrior Koans unites 100 of the rare riddles representing the core spiritual discipline of Japan's ancient Samurai tradition.Dating from the thirteenth-century records of Japan's Kamakura temples, and traditionally guarded with a reverent secrecy, they reflect the earliest manifestation of pure Zen in Japan as created by Zen Masters for their warrior pupils.
Unlike the classical Chinese koan riddles, the Japanese koans used incidents from everyday life-a broken teacup, a water jar, a cloth-to bring the warrior pupils of the Samurai to the Zen realization. As key preparatory tests, they were direct attempts to waken the sleeping wisdom in each man, found in the region of conscious meditation that is without thought. Their aim was to enable a widening of consciousness beyond the illusions of the limited self, and a joyful inspiration in life-a state thathas been compared to being free under a blue sky after imprisonment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe too Genius?
This is a book of deep contemplation.Picking it up pretty much negates any chance of a lean reading night.I have been through this book twice and the Koans still make my head hurt.Nevertheless, my lack of understanding does not detract from the brilliance of this large collection.

I suggest before attempting this, be sure to read John Steven's, "The Sword of No-Sword: Life of the Master Warrior Tesshu".Tesshu was known to pull Koans out on the spot, and to spend long periods working on Koans offered to him by various monks.Aside from being an amazing book, it may help people new to Koans to put them in context.

Two laps through this is hardly enough. In fact, this is not a fast read, you really need to take your time, literally 1-Koan at a time and work through them.Be prepared for a major undertaking. If you're game, I highly recommend it.Here's one of my favorites:

(1) Using the divine powers of the Way, manifest the snake body and the woman form.
(2) How is it when you meet the dragon?
(3) Show the scales before my eyes.

If you're totally baffled, don't worry.Fortunately the book helps put the Koans in context, for whatever that's worth.Good luck.....and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Not For Everyone
Trevor Leggett does his usual outstanding job. But the book is not for everyone. If you are looking for an introductory book to Zen meditation steer clear! This is hard core stuff. Samuari Zen is especially good for those like myself who found their path in Zen via bujutsu, but if you come from another perspective don't let that stop you from considering it.Like most koans, you could be on this book all of your life. If you use koans in meditation this is a great source with lots of background up front in the text. There are a few books I'd give $100 to own....This is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is heavy! Take your time reading it.
There are a lot of books on martial arts, and how to use zen, martial arts, I Ching, Sun Tzu, and other even more esoteric Asian wisodm for everyday living. Some are very shallow, some are good, some are classics. The there is Samurai Zen: The Warrior Koans. This book is for the serious scholar. The first part is just forewords, telling the background of the Warrior Koans, how they were used, and how to use them in the present day. It also explains that it will take years for the dedicated reader to get through the book, and that I agree with!
What I like with this book is that it does not promise a quick fix. It clearly states that it takes time and dedication. Long time and serious dedication. I am not through it yet. I can also see that the very process of going through the book and understanding the koans will create a certain peace of mind. ... Read more
