Mr. Van Torp had not been on deck; in fact, he had not been seen at all since he had disappeared into his cabin a quarter of an hour before the steamer had left the pier. There was a good deal of curiosity about him amongst the passengers, as there would have been about the famous Primadonna if she had not come punctually to every meal, and if she had not been equally regular in spending a certain number of hours on deck every day.At first every one was anxious to have what people call a 'good look' at her, because all the usual legends were already repeated about her wherever she went. It was said that she was really an ugly woman of thirty- five who had been married to a Spanish count of twice that age, and that he had died leaving her penniless, so that she had been obliged to support herself by singing. Others were equally sure that she was a beautiful escaped nun, who had been forced to take the veil in a convent in Seville by cruel parents, but who had succeeded in getting herself carried off by a Polish nobleman disguised as a priest. Every one rememberedthe marvellous voice that used to sing so high above all the other nuns, behind the lattice on Sunday afternoons at the church of the Dominican Convent. That had been the voice of Margarita da Cordova, and she could never go back to Spain, for if she did the Inquisition would seize upon her, and she would be tortured and probably burnt alive to encourage the other nuns. This was very romantic, but unfortunately there was a man who said he knew the plain truth about her, and that she was just a good-looking Irish girl who... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Story of idealized love and a wicked murderer

This is a novel about a murderer and a peasant girl who saves the life of one of his intended victims. Folco Corbario marries a wealthy widow, and all of society suspects he is out for her money. But years go by and all goes well between the two. Her son, the frail and sickly Marcello, is in love with Aurora. Seeing his chance, Corbario poisons his wife and attemps to beat Marcello to death during a storm. But Marcello is rescued by the peasant girl Regina, who nurses him back to health. Marcello falls in love with her, proposes marriage to her, but she, knowing of Aurora, nobly rejects him. Marcello also comes to realize his love for her is only motivated by a desire to repay her kindness in tending to him during his recovery. Regina becomes ill, and Aurora visits her; they both acknowledge the love they have for Marcello. Regina dies (ever so conveniently) knowing that Marcello would have married her had Aurora not had previous claims. Corbario is caught and sent to prison.

As in most of Crawford's novels, there are good things and bad. The disappearance of Marcello is handled intriguingly, though the introduction of the poison as the murder weapon is too pat. Regina, however, is the best thing about this novel; she is the kind of character that Crawford relished in creating.Self-sacrificing, idealistic, honest, but still a life-and-blood character and never just a romanticized figment of the imagination, Regina captures the reader's attention; when she is not on the scene we miss her and long for her return. Without her, the novel would be forgettable; with her, it's a pretty decent novel.

2-0 out of 5 stars His first novel, but certainly not his best
His first novel, set in India, Crawford seems more interested in presenting local color scenes, as well as the politics, religion, and customs of the country, than in telling an interesting story. Katherine presents the love interest, though she dies of jungle fever at the end. In one scene, that is typically Crawford while at the same time seeming ludicrous, everyone involved in a tiger hunt automatically "dresses" for dinner each night, as if they were on Park Avenue. Also there is too much talk in the book, something that Crawford would become expert at, which only deadens everything. Crawford would write much better novels than this one later in his career. ... Meanwhile the council was held in the King's tent of state, within which three hundred nobles sat at ease after the King himself had taken his place on the throne, with the Queen on his right hand. There the red-bearded Frederick of Suabia, nephew to Conrad and famous afterward as the Emperor Barbarossa, stood up and told his tale: how the wild German knights had truly forced their leaders to take the mountain road and fight the Seljuks at a disadvantage; how the Seljuks appeared and disappeared again from hour to hour, falling upon their prey at every turn, reddening every pass with blood, and leaving half-killed men among the slain to wonder whence the swift smiters had come and whither they were gone. ... The idea of a sudden journey, terminating in the gloomy fortress of Saracinesca, was pleasant to his humour. The old place was ten times more grim and dismal in winter than in summer, and in his savage mood he fancied himself alone with his wife in the silent halls, making her feel the enormity of what she had done, while jealously keeping her a prisoner at his mercy. ... "Mr. John Harrington has made a great discovery. He has discovered that we require a Civil Service. This is apparently the ground on which he states himself to be a Democrat. If we remember rightly, the Civil Service Convention, which sat in discussion of the subject in the summer of 1881, was presided over by a prominent member of the Republican party. As some time has elapsed since then, and the gentlemen connected with the movement are as active and as much interested in it as ever, our orator will pardon us for questioning his right of discovery on the one hand, and his claim to be considered a Democrat on the strength of it, on the other. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great purchase!
This item came on time and in perfect condition. I recommend from buying from this seller!

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasing mixture of gothic and nautical horror
At the beginning of the twentieth century, F. Marion Crawford was one of the most prolific, widely-read novelists of the English-speaking world--a sort of Sidney Sheldon of the Edwardian era. Now, his novels are banished to the musty shelves of old-fashioned romance and historical fiction, but his supernatural tales live on, most especially "The Upper Berth" and "The Screaming Skull."

Lee Weinstein has collected all eight of Crawford's supernatural stories, some of them gothic in the extreme, others oozing pathos. But this author was at his best when writing of the sea and its unforgiving dead. Many of his stories retain a place of honor in ghostly anthologies for their atmosphere of slowly-building horror.I am in agreement with Lee Weinstein when he says, "One can only regret that he did not write more of them."

"The Dead Smile"--A gothic tale of forbidden love and vengeance from beyond the tomb.We 21st century readers are a bit more used to dealing with the theme of incest, but when Crawford published this tale, it must have shocked many Victorian sensibilities.Incestuous hints abound. The evil, dying Sir Hugh Ockram, his son, and his son's fiancée all have the same hellish smile:"...She smiled--and the smile was like the shadow of death and the seal of damnation upon her pure, young face."The best scenes are in the vault below the castle, where the Lords of Ockram lie in burial shrouds, but not entombed.

"The Screaming Skull"--A doctor murders his wife by pouring molten lead in her ear.He dies mysteriously with his throat torn out.The old seaman who inherits the doctor's cottage also inherits a skull in a hat box.Something inside the skull rattles when he shakes it. When he tries to get rid of the skull, the screams begin.

"Man Overboard!"--This story was worth the price of the book for me, because I'd never seen it before, and it's a great ghost story.Just let the obscure nautical language flow past you, e.g. "I coiled down the mizzen-topsail downhaul myself, and was going aft to see how she headed up..."This is a story of identical twin brothers who both love the same woman. When they go to sea on the 'Boston Belle,' one brother is swept overboard during a storm and drowns--but somehow remains part of the crew.As is true in most supernatural stories featuring a wedding, the innocent bride meets a horrible fate.

"For the Blood is the Life"--I don't much care for vampire stories, but this one is wonderfully eerie. Two men are dining on the roof of an old tower-fortress on the Southern Italian coast. After moonrise, the guest sees a figure lying on a mound of earth near the tower and goes to investigate. When he returns, his host tells him the story of the grave-mound.

"The Upper Berth"--A business traveler who makes many Atlantic crossings secures a berth on the 'Kamchatka,' bound for Liverpool. He requests a room with a double bunk and is disappointed to learn that he will have a roommate in the upper berth. The first night of the voyage, his roommate runs screaming out of the small room and throws himself overboard. The business traveler learns that three other men who booked into room 105 have killed themselves in the same fashion, and he is determined to investigate.

"By the Waters of Paradise"--A gothic tale that has a happy ending for a change.A melancholy young man is raised by his superstitious Welsh nurse in an ancestral castle, surrounded by gardens and fountains. One night the old nurse sees "One--two leaden coffins, fallen from the ceiling!"Sure enough, his parents die, and the nurse tells her charge the story of the Woman of the Water. Will the new lord of Cairngorm be able to escape the curse?

"The Doll's Ghost"--An old man repairs a rich girl's doll and becomes so fond of it he can hardly bear to part with it.Finally, he instructs his young daughter to return the doll to its owner. The daughter doesn't return, but the doll does.

"The King's Messenger"--A man is seated between a lovely young girl and her beloved at a dinner party, and learns that his right-hand neighbor is the King's Messenger. After the girl disappears, he discovers what the man really does.

Product Description
In our culture we demand a great deal from our intimate relationships—and we are often disappointed. This book not only reveals the social and psychological factors that lead to marital unhappiness, but also offers guidelines for change. Solomon starts by uncovering certain pervasive narcissistic myths and exploring what it means to be intimate in a culture that values autonomy and self-fulfillment above all. She shows that experiences in early childhood can lead to narcissistic vulnerability in later relationships. Case examples from her practice clarify how two individuals' feeling states and defenses mesh in the marital system and how the attempt to defend against emotional injury creates barriers to intimacy. The second part of the book focuses on treatment and on ways to change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible book
This book has absolutely changed the way I view myself and relationships. The second half is less helpful for personal growth (much more therapist-specific), but the first part is - wow, totally perspective changing. This book will help you figure out the self-other boundary and how crucial it is for relationships. Not just for married couples, and not even for those in relationships - I read it as a single lady. "Narcissism" here isn't the egotistical, over-confident and arrogant narcissism, but the narcissism where we see the world within the lenses we ourselves have developed, and view everyone's actions as radiating towards us. In other words - no one is out to get us, they are just living their own lives! Ahhh just read it for yourself!

1-0 out of 5 stars other book better

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading to Know
This book starts with lot of myths related to entitlement, autonomy, romantic love, gender myths, marriage. Recognizing some amount of narcissim in all relationships, does not make it seem so very pathological...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book available on the subject
I read any book about narcissism eagerly, but this one disappointed me.The title "Narcissism and Intimacy" implied to me that this book would explain the frustrating and psychologically devastating maze that is life with a pathological narcissist. It didn't.Maybe because it is a book more about therapy than real life experiences, I found it murky and did not teach me anything new about the subject.Usually I find it heartening to read accounts of the impact ofthe narcissist on the lives of their significant others, but I really got nothing out of this book.I also got the idea the author was discussing regular narcissism, a personality trait, as opposed to pathological narcissism, a personality disorder. If you want to read a great book that will explain everything you want to know about pathological narcissism, read Sam Vaknin's book "Malignant Self Love", which is long and a little expensive, but really the ultimate book on the subject and worth every penny. If you want something shorter and less expensive, try "When Your Perfect Partner Goes Perfectly Wrong" by Mary Jo Fay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Marriage Aid
I feel that this book will help both men and women understand not only themselves but their spouse better. All of us have varying degrees of narcissism and in order to love someone we need to learn to control our own needs for the betterment of the two as one and the one we love. This book helps with giving one a better understanding of how we can do that and what may be holding us back from really experiencing true love and intimacy. ... This book is an invaluable historic tool to understanding how the patriots of the Revolution had to struggle in the fight for Independence. Not everyone in the Colonies were sympathetic to the rebel cause, especially in the South.Francis Marion learned his guerilla war methods from the Cherokee whom he had fought and used these methods to constantly harass the British supply line as well as in the major battles in the South leading to the British split, withdrawl, and their loss at Yorktown within 2 weeks after the last battle in NC.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great ghost story
When a man gets up to tell a story about a peculiar crossing of the Atlantic, everyone listens close. He tells of a ship named the Kamtschatka, and a haunted stateroom. But, this is no ordinary story of mysterious lights and vague dreads. Brisbane is a strong man, and the spirit that he faced had already killed four travelers. But, Brisbane is a man of courage, and he determines to get to the bottom of the mystery, no matter what the cost.

This is no ordinary hunt, however, and what Brisbane soon finds himself wrestling with would chill the stoutest heart!

Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an Italian-American author who wrote many stories that were "weird and fantastic." Sadly, he is little remembered today, but during his day he was considered one of the greats. This short story is particularly excellent, a great work of horror. I liked how the protagonist of the story is presented as a strong and courageous man (so often in horror stories, the protagonist spends the entire story on the run), but his courage only takes him deeper into a terrifying situation.

I found the story to be quite gripping, keeping me turning the pages deep into the night. So, if you want a good ghost story (make that a great ghost story), then get The Upper Berth by Francis Marion Crawford, you won't regret it! ... Read more

Product Description
In both military and civil aviation the ultimate nightmare is a mid-air collision. MID-AIR offers readers brutally authentic accounts of collisions involving military aircraft and civil transports. Each chapter is a window through which readers re-live the aerial crisis, the voice transcript (where available), the collision, the subsequent investigation, and the often-elusive Probable Cause. The author is a former military and commercial pilot, and this is his eighth book. He eliminates the fog of aviation techno-jargon and explains each accident in easy-to-understand layman's terms. We chart our future by relying upon lessons from our past. MID-AIR is an eloquent and timeless journey into aviation history. It is a truly priceless resource for all Aviation Enthusiasts and Aviation Professionals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but could have been even better
A very complete book (over 60 accident reports) covering over 75 years, worldwide, including some runway accidents (not exactly "mid-airs") and even collisions with birds.

One overriding impression one gets is the large number of collisions between civilian and military aircraft, and between airliners and general aviation aircraft. In the U.S., I don't worry much about airliners colliding, but those other types still give me cause for concern.

The one thing I wish the author had done was to follow up, where appropriate, with information about changes in procedures that may have come about because of the accident reports; with a few exceptions that is not done.

Also, the chosen photos are often poor choices to represent the aircraft involved.A large percentage show the military equivalents; perhaps due to the author's Marine background?I would have preferred to see airliners in the livery of the aircraft involved in the accident.

And he repeats, several times, the error that the Douglas C-74 was the military equivalent of the DC-7.While it was true that at one time a civilian version of the C-74 was contemplated (which would have been called DC-7 if it had happened), that was never done and the actual DC-7 was a much different, and smaller, aircraft.

Still, if you want to know why airplanes occasionally collide, this book is a must.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs editing
I enjoyed this book but had many reservations about the presentation. The formatting makes it look amateurish, with indents, italics and bolding all over the place, to the extent that it is quite hard to read. It is a shame because the actual content is generally good.
