From the author: The rheological properties of high-density polyethylene melts were found to change drastically after treatment with oxygen or peroxide. Unusual features of the treated melts in shear flow (190[degrees]C) included a) increase in length of time to reach steady state values of shear stress in start-up experiments; b) a non-reproducibility of the low-shear rate sections of the flow curves measured at increasing and decreasing shear rate; c) an increase of viscosity at low shear rates compared to the neat sample. Under non-stationary extensional flow (a regime of constant force) the treatment leads to a change in shape of the strain development with time, an increase of the apparent elongational viscosity, and an increase in time to break. At 150-170[degrees]C, the rheological behavior of the treated polyethylenes is completely identical to the corresponding behavior of the untreated. These results, together with data from IR-spectroscopy and GPC suggest the following mechanism: The oxidation or peroxidation leads to reactive sites in the polymer chain that incorporate a few long branches during the initial contact with oxygen or peroxide. These reactive sites remain in the polymer after cooling/solidification and can become activated again upon heating to 190[degrees]C causing additional changes in molecular structure. Formation of the long-chain branches results in an increased resistance of the melt to extensional deformation, and an improvement in processing behavior, as well as the quality of bottles produced by the blow-molding process. We present a framework for understanding how the hippocampus, neocortex, and basal ganglia work together to support cognitive and behavioral function in the mammalian brain. This framework is based on computational tradeoffs that arise in neural network models, where achieving one type of learning function requires very different parameters from those necessary to achieve another form of learning. For example, we dissociate the hippocampus from cortex with respect to general levels of activity, learning rate, and level of overlap between activation patterns. Similarly, the frontal cortex and associated basal ganglia system have important neural specializations not required of the posterior cortex system. Taken together, this overall cognitive architecture, which has been implemented in functioning computational models, provides a rich and often subtle means of explaining a wide range of behavioral and cognitive neuroscience data. This study examined the persistence of early emerging aberrant behavior in 13 preschool children with developmental disabilities. The severity of aberrant behavior was assessed every 6 months over a 3-year period. Teachers completed the assessments using the Aberrant Behavior Checklist [Aman, M. G., & Singh, N. N. (1986). Problem behaviors were present in all children at the beginning of the study. Nine of the 13 children entered the study with relatively high levels of aberrant behaviors that showed little change over the 3 years. These data suggest that aberrant behaviors often emerge early and can be highly persistent during the preschool years. I like a lot of the messages of the poems
This book by Michael J. O'Reilly contains poetry on a number of topics, the most frequent of which seem to be God, love, and autism.I am not in a very good position to judge the quality of the poetry, but I liked most of the poetry about God and love, and some of the statements about the situations of autistic people were powerful.I appreciated the poem about O'Reilly's reaction to hearing of people who died from restraint, and the one about being a lot more than could ever be contained in the bureaucratic paperwork written about him.I have a gut-level aversion to some of the language around autism -- I am autistic, and autism even at its most unpleasant side is not a demon or a vicious monster -- but the author balances those out with positive descriptions of autism that border on romanticizing it.One of the most powerful messages I get from this book, though, is that we are born to be exactly who we are, uniqueness, warts, and all, and that forgetting our humanity is inexcusable. ...
