Product Description
The girl who was dying lay in an invalid chair piled up with cushions in a sheltered corner of the lawn. The woman who had come to visit her had deliberately turned away her head with a murmured word about the sunshine and the field of buttercups. Behind them was the little sanitariuma gray stone villa built in the style of a chateauovergrown with creepersand with terraced lawns stretching down to the sunny corner to which the girl had been carried earlier in the day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great story
Here's another good one by Oppenheim. A London politician gets framed in a sex scandal, flees to Paris and then gets mixed up in intrigue involving Germany, France and England before WW1. The supporting cast is well thought-out: an enterprising friend, a scheming bad guy and two independent women who have strong roles in addition to adding a little romance and sexual tension. The plot is easy to follow, and Oppenheim does very well at keeping the story moving and making you try to guess what will happen next. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A WWI thriller
Sandy Graham may be a brilliant chemist who's discovered a new formula for a more deadly explosive, but he's an absolute idiot when it comes to keeping his mouth shut in a crowded London restaurant. So it should come as no surprise, really, when he goes to the lavatory to clean up and never comes back out.

This sets into action several highly cultured spies from different governments out to find Sandy and his formula. From the U.S. (a neutral country at this time in the story) is socialite Pamela Van Teyl. Oh, I like her. She's got style. She's got class. She's got *something* made of brass. Also from America is Oscar Fischer, but he was originally born in Germany and that's who he's working for. He's also got a major "thang" for Pamela. The United Kingdom is represented by suave spy John Lutchester, who always seems to turn up at the right place at the right time. There's also Prince Nikasti from the Empire of Japan, but you can call him Kato.

Who will find the formula? Will Germany and Japan become allies to attack the U.S.? Or will Germany and the U.S. become bedfellows and attack Japan? Will Pamela consider the exciting life she would have with Fischer and marry him, or will Lutchester steal her heart away?

Read this rather short book to find the answers. ... Read more

Like a man on his way to prison, Alfred Burton took his place in a third-class carriage in his customary train to Garden Green. Ned Miles, who travelled in the oil trade, came up and smote him upon the shoulder." Say, cocky, what have you been doing to yourself? " he demanded in amazement. " Have you robbed a bank and going about in disguise, eh? Why, the missis won't know you! "Burton shrank a little back in his place. His eyes seemed filled with some nameless distaste as he returned the other's gaze." I have taken a dislike to my former style of dress," he replied simply, " also to my moustache."" Taken a dislike — Lord love a duck!" his quondam friend exclaimed. " Strike me blind if I should have known you! Taken a dislike to the — here, Alf, is this a game ? "" Not at all," Burton answered quietly. " It is the truth. It is one of those matters, I suppose," he continued, " which principally concern oneself."" No need to get jumpy about it," Mr. Miles remarked, still a little dazed. " Come in and have some farthing nap with the boys. They won't recognize you in that get-up. We'll have a lark with them."Burton shook liis head. Again he was unable to keep the distaste from his eyes or tone." Not to-night, thank you."The train was just moving, so Miles was obliged to hurry off, but at Garden Green, Burton was compelled to run the gauntlet of their cheers and mockery as he passed down the platform. Good sports and excellent fellows he had thought them yesterday. To-day he had no words for them. He simply knew that they grated upon every nerve in his body and that he loathed them. For the first time he began to be frightened. What was this thing that had happened to him? How was it possible for him to contin... ... Read more

Product Description
1904. A best-selling author of novels, short stories, magazine articles, translations, and plays, Oppenheim published over 150 books. He is considered one of the originators of the thriller genre, his novels also range from spy thrillers to romance, but all have an undertone of intrigue. He also wrote under the name of Anthony Partridge. The Master Mummer begins: Sheets of virgin manuscript paper littered my desk, the smoke of much uselessly consumed tobacco hung about the room in a little cloud. Many a time I had dipped my pen in the ink, only to find myself a few minutes later scrawling ridiculous little figures upon the margin of my blotting-pad. It was not at all an auspicious start for one who sought immortality. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. ... Read more
