5-0 out of 5 stars Biography Highlights Life of Beatrix Potter
I drew this name as a book report subject, and I was not sure I would like it. I really enjoyed reading it. Beatrix was not expected to do much beyond fix flowers and play the piano. She became a world famous author. Youngreaders will love this quick paced life story.

4-0 out of 5 stars MENAGERIE IN A NURSERY
This is an easy introduction into the genre of Biography, only 52 pages, with pen and ink sketches by Karen Ritz. This book about the life of the first author to write a book just for children to enjoy (rather than be instructed from) can easily be read in one sitting. It reveals the crippling limitations of Victorian women of the Gentry in both Career and Marriage. Was poor Beatrix doomed to be a spinster?

An excellent First Biography in short sentences for school children. Also a good study in Victorian upbringing (where children were not always Seen, much less Heard!)Beatrix was raised in a home considered strict even by Victorian standards. Thus the book could stimulate discussion about when it was best/worst to be a child, as well as Women's Roles in Victorian Society. Children might even ask about Queen Victoria.

Most important is the care which Beatrix put into her books--not just the stories and the illustrations, but her insistence that the format be sized for children's smaller hands. The book includes a complete listing of her tales plus a bibliography. This book just might lead some elementary children to reread their childhood favorites! Or inspire them to read these tales aloud to Kindergarten classes. They would be amazed to learn that serious adults actually belong to a Peter Rabbit Society too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A DELIGHTFUL BOOK TO HAVE!ONE OF THE BEST.
This is probably one of the better, and certainly one of the most comprehensive collections of the art produced by Beatrix Potter during her life time. The bulk of this work consists of 167 reproductions in color and 73 in monochrome, in addition to examples of Potter's handwriting in story-letters, manuscript and miniature letters. There is also a collection of photographs of Hill Top and Sawrey which gives a good look a the setting for Potter's life and her work.

The book is broken down into several distinct sections, starting with her early work, which includes drawings in black and white and in color going back to when she was about nine years old. There is a section on interiors (houses and barns), Houses, village scenes and landscapes, Gardens, Plant Studies and Still Life, microscopic work and fungi drawings, animal studies, imaginary happenings in the animal world, early ideas for illustrated books, and then extensive drawings and water colors of her actual art which she created for her many wonderful books.

The "Appreciation" or introduction by Anne Carroll Moore is quite well done and quite informative. The book is extremely well organized and of high quality. Each work of Potter's is well labeled and dated. All in all, this is a very useful book and an absolute delight to read and own.

This is one you will probably want to own as the material in it is more visual than written and is the kind of book that you will want to gaze at over and over again.WARNING:When you purchase one of these books, BE SURE you find one that does not have pages removed!I have found quite a number of copies in used book stores, and indeed, libraries where some swine has taken a razor and removed page after page. These pages are suitable to frame and hang and I guess people cannot resist.Do be careful when you buy.

The richly illustrated At Home with Beatrix Potter will delight the many admirers of the artist and writer of children's books. Her beloved characters--Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, and their whimsical friends--were inspired by the English countryside, which she grew to love during summer vacations as a girl. In 1905, at the age of 40, Potter bought Hill Top Farm overlooking Esthwaite Water in the Lake District, a region of hills and lakes famous for its glorious landscapes. She continued to buy property in the area with her royalties, and by the time she died 37 years later, she had amassed over 4,000 acres. She fought vigorously to preserve the beauty of the Lake District and its rural ways, leaving her estate to the National Trust, Britain's leading conservation agency. This book, written by an official of the Trust, is a tribute to the jewel of the estate, 17th-century Hill Top Farm. Potter restored and furnished it as a showcase of English country ways, though she actually lived in a large cottage nearby. Her substantial collection of Lake District antiques reflected the influential Arts & Crafts movement, which emphasized the integrity of handmade objects in a period of increasing mechanization. The book takes us on a tour of the farm, alternating the artist's original photographs and watercolors with photographs of the building and countryside as they look today. Several two-page spreads of the garden in early summer and the Lake District in late autumn are especially beautiful. Unpretentious, solid, charming, understated: At Home with Beatrix Potter embodies the rustic virtues that Beatrix loved. --John Stevenson Book Description
The creator of Peter Rabbit, Samuel Whiskers, and Jemima Puddle-Duck, Beatrix Potter (1866-1942) is one of the best-loved children's book authors of all time. Yet few in America are aware of the role she played in protecting some of England's most beautiful landscapes and in designing romantic interiors and a lovely garden at Hill Top, her beloved Lake District farmhouse.

Taking the reader through her picturesque house and the breathtaking scenery around it that inspired many of her famous stories, this charming book is the first to look at the intimate connection between the English countryside and Potter's work. Her own exquisite sketches and watercolors, as well as personal ephemera, appear alongside specially commissioned full-color photographs, revealing a home filled with treasured old furniture and beautiful objects and celebrating an artist-storyteller whose legacy as a conservationist at last receives the attention it deserves. ... about one of my most favorite children story writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A place I'd like to visit
What a beautiful book. Clear, inviting photos, and interesting information. A book you will enjoy reading and sharing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten stars
Being the big fan of Beatrox Potter, the woman and not just the author I was overjoyed to get this as a gift recently and the book is a treat for the eyes. While it has pages and pages of stunning photographs as well as her own water colours, it is the text and complete history of her farms that is awesome.

That and reading and seeing photographs of her as well as her farms and reading why she bought each property and the breeds of sheep she raised was of special interest to me.I loved seeing the inside of her farms, although I had seen the inside of a few, via the National Land Trust to whom she left her properties.

I loved the photographs of Beatrix and how she was so eccentric, kind yet firm and a woman ahead of her time. And it was nice to read that she was a true homestead style woman who had the waste not want not mentality, as well as a deep appreciation for quality and hated to see old bridges torn down for modern ones, although she was quick to make sure the stones and plants, wood and other things being discarded by some, didn't end up in some dump area but were recycled into new walls and buildings and plantings on her property.

This is a book a cottage gardener, keeper of sheep. painters, stone masons and anyone who loves working with their hands will love. As well as sincere environmentalists and organic gardeners and farmers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A DELIGHT FOR THOSE WHO LOVE BEATRIX POTTER'S BOOKS
AT HOME WITH BEATRIX POTTER is a delight to the eye and the spirit for those who love this children's author and her "little books."It is written by Susan Denyer of Britain's National Trust. (Potter's propertywas left to the National Trust.) The focus of the book is Hilltop Farm, thefirst farm Beatrix Potter acquired.Although she lived across the road inCastle Cottage, Potter often used Hilltop for its library, guestroom, andworkplaces. She also used it to display her "treasures."Thisbook reveals her love of nature, the English Lake District, and of oldthings--carved dressers, chests, spinning wheels are a few of the"gems" portrayed.Two-page color spreads convey the beauty ofthe Lake Area, where Potter became a major landowner, sheepfarmer, and ahappily married woman. It is wonderful to see the original places, buildings, and objects that she incorporated into her books (examples areshown side by side). The book's layout, photographs, and design arefirst-rate.Reading this book reminded me of THE PRIVATE WORLD OF TASHATUDOR and its wonderful photographs by Richard Brown.Like Tudor, Potterdrew what she knew and preferred country to city life. (Tudor also was aworking farmer in New Hampshire.) Finally, this bookpresents informationabout Beatrix Potter and the things and people she loved in an informativeand respectful way. This book is not a biography, and Denyer avoids thebiographer's temptation to "sum up" or "explain"Beatrix Potter. Rather, we draw our own conclusions after being exposed tothe things Potter loved. The select bibliography at the book's end providesa list of works on and by Potter (her journals and letters have beenpublished) that is very helpful to those who want to know more about thisauthor. This is a book to treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blend of Biography, Original Sketches and Scenic Photography
This book is a balanced combination of biographical information, Beatrix Potter's sketches and paintings, and exceptional scenic photography of the Lake District she helped preserve. It also details the exterior andinterior of a house she owned which provided the backgrounds for many ofher book illustrations. The side-by-side comparisons were interesting, eventhough the house seemed to be more of a showpiece than her actualresidence.(Thus, the book title is somewhat misleading.) I found thisbook to be of exceptional quality and, although the text was sometimesoverwrought with property, town and house names, the book includes manycaptioned photos and a map that allow the reader to appreciate the area inwhich she lived. ... Book Description
The Tale of Peter Rabbit is one of the best-selling, and best-loved, children's books of all time, and the story of how it came to be published-and what's happened to the book in the 100 years since publication-is fascinating. Judy Taylor, a leading authority on Potter, tells the story that begins with a small girl's devotion to her pet rabbit and ends with Beatrix Potter's bequest of extensive areas of England's Lake District. In between we see how the book began as a letter to the son of Potter's governess, look at its initial publication (paid for by Potter) in black-and-white, and follow Peter Rabbit's rise to the most famous rabbit in the world. ... While we know much of Beatrix Potter from her classic children's stories, there is a great deal more to this courageous woman than meets the eye. Born into a well-off but repressive family and society, Beatrix Potter's triumph over personal difficulties and her ground-breaking work in such fields as science and conservation make her a great role model and inspiration for children today. This splendid children's introduction to her extraordinary life story is ideal for young fans who want an informative and easy to understand text and provides an excellent source of reference for school projects. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book.
When I first began this book, I was a bit skeptical. I wasnt sure at all that I could make it through the whole thing. But after a few chapters, I found myself falling in love with Miss Potter. It is a great story, for unlike most biographies I have read, It ends on a happy note. Her final years were much better than her first.

5-0 out of 5 stars The remarkable story of a very private life.
The late Margaret Lane, President of The Women's Press Club, the Dickens Fellowship, the Johnson Society, the Brontë Society and the Jane Austen Society has written this charming little book about Beatrix Potter.

Beatrix Potter's life was a very private one, carefully hidden from the public eye, although she is known and loved by generations of children. Her life began in joylessness and solitude, with drawing as her one fascination.

In the book we follow Beatrix Potter through her sad childhood, her struggle for independence, her illfated love affair and happy marriage, and we learn about how she created all these charming and whimsical characters - Peter Rabbit, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Tom Kitten and so many more. The book is illustrated with old photographs, and pen and ink illustrations by Beatrix Potter herself. A must for any Beatrix Potter lover.
