5-0 out of 5 stars Andrew Jackson
I enjoyed this book.I like to learn about presidents.I like to know what people called the presidents.my favorite part of the book is when Andrew Jackson married Rachel Donelson Robards for the first time in 1791.I would think that people that who like presidents and want to learn about Andrew Jackson would like this book.I learned that in 1788 people would duel with other people.Sometimes they would be shot and die or they would be lucky and not be shot.Well I hope you read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made."
I quite often read an "Edit Book".By that I mean a book that is not written by a author, but a book which is a collection of stuff that someone gathers together, edits it,then gets it published. At times the editor puts a lot into it,but more often acts as an assembler only.In fact they often seem like they have been assembled by a bunch of staff "researchers" and without any object except to produce a certain number of pages. The first book I wrote an Amazon review was such a book by the same editor.I wrote the review on August 11,2003,gave it only 1 Star, and remain the one and only reviewer. When I started to read this book,I noted that there had been no reviews to date, even though it was published in 2002.Halfway through,I realized it was by the same editor.
Surprisingly,I really liked this book.In a similar way, there could have been any number of quotes chosen;but the Presidents were all included and in order. In that way it is quite a historical endeavor.
A couple of things come out in this book.
First, and for obvious reasons,a book like this shows that the guiding principles of the Presidents have never wavered, despite their personalities or the issues and things they faced.I can't imagine that would be popssible with any other country.
Secondly, the US was a country formed by the people and for the people,a Republic with 3 branches of government. This results in the President being the President of all the people;instead of the leader of a political party. This contrasts with every other country, including mine,Canada. The US gains immensely from this.
Thirdly,as you read the quotes from each president, you will see the same principles emerge;Liberty,Freedom,Equality,Desire for Peace,Willingness to help others,Desire to improve,No desire to dominate others,Government role is to serve the people rather than for the people to serve the government.
I think it is too bad that there were not comments included on the dust jacket by others.Instead, the easy way out was taken and lines from the Presidents were used. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most detailed juvenile biograph of Harry S Truman
The volumes in the Encyclopedia of President series all begin in media res, with a defining moment in the life of that particular president.I anticipated that Jim Hargrove would begin his look at Harry Truman as many juvenile biographies of the 33rd president do with the moment when the then vice president being told that Franklin Roosevelt had died. While Hargrove begins with that, the defining moment of the first chapter is Truman finding out about the Manhattan Project and his decision to order a pair of atomic bombs to be dropped on Japan.Of course, Hargrove's point is that the advent of the nuclear age and the decision to use the bomb is a large part of Truman's legacy as president.

The rest of this juvenile biography tells how "Little Four-Eyes" ended up on "The Fast Road to the White House."The chief thing young readers will get out of reading this volume is that Truman was never seduced by the powers of his office. The story is of an ordinary man, one of the common folk as some would say, whom circumstances put in the White House. The lesson is that sometimes this nation is very lucky and has the right person in the White House at the right time.Hargrove does get into the how Truman ended up being FDR's running mate in 1944, which seems to be based more on how Truman compared favorably to the controversial Henry Wallace, the current vice president, than on Truman's qualifications to become President.Hargrove ends with Truman hearing a childhood friend says that Truman would "rather be right than be President" and responding, "I'd rather be anything than be President."

The book is illustrated with black & white photographs from Truman's personal and public life that reveal something interesting: notice the difference in the smile Truman has in photographs with his family versus those taken in public. In terms of juvenile biographies of Truman this is the most detailed, which is standard for the Encyclopedia of Presidents series. This would never be the first book young readers should turn to in order to find out about the life of Truman, one of the most admired presidents of the 20th century (or would that be one of the few?), but after availing themselves of one of the decent introductory juvenile biographies this is the one that they should turn to for the details. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book on U.S. history - a collector's book
I liked the way the author included photos of the presidents' wives and described which popular music and books were enjoyed by people during each president's term in office. The speeches in the back by Al Gore and George W. Bush that talk about the Florida recount during the 2000 election kind of make this book a collector's item for political history buffs. ...
