t is a great pity that any one should have a grandfather who ended his days in such a sort as this; but it was no fault of Barnaby True's, nor could he have done anything to prevent it, seeing he was not even born into the world at the time that his grandfather turned pirate, and that he was only one year old when Captain Brand so met his death on the Cobra River. Nevertheless, the boys with whom he went to school never tired of calling him "Pirate," and would sometimes sing for his benefit that famous catchpenny ballad beginning thus. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Volume, but Not Perfect
Howard Pyle is, perhaps, the dean of American illustrators, up there with the great N. C. Wyeth and Charles Dana Gibson as the progenitors of what we now have come to think of as illustration in America. The visions we see in our collective imaginations of knights on gleaming chargers, dastardly pirates, and other such images truly began with Pyle's brush. "Pirates, Patriots, and Princesses" (hereafter referred to as PP&P) is a nice, if slim, volume of Pyle's art, but might not be the single best one to get.

Within PP&P you'll find a number of wonderful paintings, from Pyle's famed illustration of Blackbeard's demise, to the mournful "Marooned," and others that you will doubtless be looking for. This book focuses on his paintings of pirates, the American Revolution, and various chivalry/mythology-related works. It's very nice to have an inexpensive volume of Pyle's work available, and the book is printed on good quality paper. What troubles me about the book is, first, that some of the works are in black and white (not many, but enough to be perturbing) and printed far too small to be truly appreciated. For instance, my personal favorite, "Marooned," is printed much smaller than a postcard and is somewhat disappointing. Dover might have done better to give the paintings a single page treatment apiece. As it is, this is really just a minor introduction to Pyle, rather than a standard work. For those looking to begin an interest in Pyle, Wyeth, and others, this is a good place to start, but you may want to look at other books as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I own other Dover art books, and they are wonderful books, but the content of this one was a bit disappointing to me. I was really hoping for more pirate pieces. The famous cover used on Treasure Island is not even included. These seemed to be more obscure pieces that I had never seen before. I don't know, if you're a huge Pyle fan, then you might really enjoy it, but if you are looking for his art that you've seen printed in countless pirate books like me...this is not going to impress you much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Artwork
This book brings to you the blend of the fantasy life of its title: Pirates, Patriots and Princesses with the outstanding artwork of the master Howard Pyle. He brings to you such action and grace with great brush strokes that come alive - even after printing into a book! Can't get much better than this! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE AND BE WARNED
i thought this book was a collection of his illustrations and a biography.. it is nothing of the kind! it's basically a list of howard pyle's literary and artistic contributions to society. no beautiful pictures! i actually bought it and am trying to return it - what a waste of time and money!

1-0 out of 5 stars A book about art, not an art book.
I just received what I thought was the ultimate tome of Howard Pyle's work, but was extremely disappointed by the content. This is something of a catalog of his work that pays very little regard to the value of actually seeing the work.Encapsulated in two thick heavy volumes is a wealth of data about Pyles career his pieces. But the entirity of the pictures are contained in half of one of the volumes, and ALL of the pictures are about 2.5 inches tall- nothing larger. For someone interested in cataloging and mindlessly auctioneering, this is acceptable, but for those of us who want to look at art it is completely useless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Howard Pyle
"Howard Pyle was a seminal figure for generations of artists, and Paul Davis's record of Pyle's illustrations and writings is an invaluable tool for scholars, collectors and others studying not only Pyle but also his far-reaching influence. This book belongs on the reference shelf of anyone interested in the history of American illustration." ... Read more

Book Description
Reprint of the original edition (1921). Oversized Quarto. 1921. 2p. l., iii-x, 217, [24], 219-242p. front (port.) illus. Wilmington, Del., The Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, 1921. 1853-1911, American illustrator and writer, b. Wilmington, Del., studied at the Art Students League, New York City. His illustrations appeared regularly in Harper's Weekly, and in many other American magazines. He both wrote and illustrated tales of chivalry and adventure for young people, among them The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883), The Wonder Clock (1888), The Garden Behind the Moon (1895), and The Story of King Arthur and His Knights (1903). His illustrations are of marked individuality. Scenes from both medieval folklore and American history are rendered with engaging simplicity and penetrating realism. Pyle's reconstructions of the past, of which he had an exhaustive knowledge, were uniquely believable. He also painted murals and taught painting. In 1894 he became directorof illustration at Drexel Institute, Philadelphia. In 1900 he started the Howard Pyle School of Art next to his own studio in Wilmington, and classes were offered free to a limited number of students. A large collection of his pictures is preservedat the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts. Pyle wrote many of the books and stories he illustrated, and though he will always be remembered first for his art, many of his books are considered classics and still in print or available in recent reprints. Most of these were illustrated with his distinctive pen & ink style that hearkened back to the wood-engraved images that were common during his childhood and early years of his career. He wasn't restricted to this more-formal style, but seemed to gravitate towards it in pen illustrations for his own work. In all over 750 books illustrated by Pyle are included. Besterman 5281. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Lot of Money For NotVery Much
I lost alot of money (half the cost of this book) finding out that this wasn't the book I wanted.
You'd think, with all the wonderful illustrations Pyle created over his long and productive life, that there would be books dedicated to reproducing some of his greatest works.Well, let me tell you, this isn't one of them. It's a 242-page letdown.
I knew I was taking a chance when I ordered this book: there weren't any reader reviews; no real details on the contents of the book; and, because it's a reprint of a book published in 1921, it would probably only contain his engravings, not any of his paintings.
I found, to my chagrin, that the book contains only 23 of his engravings, most of them illustrations created to accompany stories in magazines and books (the kinds of pictures that were used at the head of chapters, and to illustrate a quote or phrase from the story). The rest of the book, about 217 pages, is a listing (with no pictures), of the illustrations he created for books and magazines, and the books and articles he authored.
If you want a catalog of all the great pictures Howard Pyle created, but not be able to see them, then I guess this book will work for you. But if you want a book that really illustrates Pyle's genius, you'll have to keep looking. ... Read more

Demonic eyes shining out of a shadowy tree. A blind man staggering through a moonlit landscape. Disembodied, dark hands rising out of snow. A feral dog with one blue eye. Ambiguous shadows harboring human shapes. These are but a few of the eerie images in this mesmerizing, wondrous book. There are four artists represented here: three generations of Wyeth men--N.C., Andrew, and James--and Howard Pyle, artistically speaking the father of them all. An essay on each artist precedes a generous selection of stunning, full-size, color plates of his work; the essay on Andrew is written by his wife, Betsy. It is Betsy who originally conceived of the exhibition that led to the book. David Michaelis, author of a new biography of N.C., writes, "The intensity of her relationship with all three Wyeths makes her the true linking figure in what has too often been simplified as a male succession."

The simple chronological ordering of the book, from Pyle to his student N.C. Wyeth, to N.C.'s son Andrew, to Andrew's son James, turns out to have a peculiar power. The gaudy, tricky, glorious too-muchness of both Pyle and James make illustrational bookends around the more subtly drawn histrionics of N.C. and Andrew. It might come as a surprise to fans of Andrew's uniquely sublime naturalistic gifts that he possesses an uncanny streak of surrealism, which he couches in his otherwise orderly realism. The book as a whole should give hours and hours of pleasure to Pyle and Wyeth fans of all persuasions and generations. --Peggy Moorman ... Read more
