The end of December, 1914, found Sara Lee quite contented. If it was resignation rather than content, no one but Sara Lee knew the difference. Knitting, too; but not for soldiers. She was, to be candid, knitting an afghan against an interesting event which involved a friend of hers. ... Read more

He had not overheard any words, but their voices were quarrelsome, and once he heard a chair or some article of furniture overthrown. Was awakened about two by footsteps on the stairs, followed by the sound of oars in the lower hall. He told his story plainly and simply. Under cross-examination admitted that he was fond of detective stories and had tried to write one himself; that he had said at the store that he would like to see that "conceited ass" swing, referring to the prisoner; that he had sent flowers to Jennie Brice at the theater, and had made a few advances to her, without success. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not at all dated
This book was written in 1912, but unless readers take the time to check out the publication history in the front of the book, they will probably never guess that this book is almost a century old.The Case of JennyBrice is still an intriguing murder mystery with a realistic heroine.Whatstrikes me most about this (and others by Rinehart) is that as you read, you don't think, "This is an amazing book to have been written 100 yearsago."You think simply, "What an amazing book."This is a very shortbook, actually more of a novella, which makes it an excellent book to readwhen you can take a day just to enjoy a good mystery.

The Case of JennyBrice is atmospherically set during a flood in a boardinghouse of a poorPittsburgh neighborhood. From the very beginning, Rinehart develops a realsense of place.Unlike too many amateur detectives in novels, this heroinehas a believable reason for being involved in the case.Again, seen as aproduct of 1912, Miss Pittman is an especially extraordinary woman, buteven without that in mind, she is a convincing character. The Case ofJenny Bright has been referred to as not one ofRinehart's mostoutstanding mysteries, but in light of the stiff competition from her othernovels, that is not really a criticism.

Compared with many of today'sbetter mysteries, The Case of Jenny Bright holds its own.It is not just acuriosity because of its age; it is a fascinating mystery in its own right. ... Read more

Bab, only twenty months younger than her sister, the official debutante, rebels against her treatment by her family.Set during the pre-World War I era, when women's roles were rapidly changing, Bab determines to assert her independence through this series of misadventures and mysteries. . . ."I am writing all of this as truthfully as I can.I am not defending myself. What I did I was driven to, as any one can see.It takes a real shock to make the average Familey wake up to the fact that the youngest daughter is not the Familey baby at seventeen. All I was doing was furnishing the shock. If things turned out badly, as they did, it was because I rather overdid the thing. That is all.My motives were perfectly ireproachible." - BabAnd this Bab feels through all of her hilarious and at times dangerous adventures to prove she is not just a Sub-Deb. Written by that master of mystery and humor, Mary Roberts Rinehart, Bab is a delightful combination of both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bab A Sub Deb is Great!
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read.It reads just like a teenager writing it which is a credit to the author, M Reinhart.

The scrapes and adventures Bab gets herself into and the long suffering she puts up with are too funny (because of course the rest of the world just doesn't understand the woes of being a sub-deb).

Read it for yourself and if you have an adolescent daughter, pass it on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Hilarious
Bab is a melodramtic young lady with a habit of getting herself into hilarious scrapes as she attempt to deal with the indignity of not being allowed to be a debutante (deb) like her (slightly!) older sister.

This is one of the funniest books I have ever read.I still laugh out loud over Bab's sincere "lothing" of her enemies and her attempts to do good deed by helping others with their "speling."

Book Description

The mystery stories and other popular fiction of Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876–1958) brought her wealth and fame, but she was much more than a writer. She was a well-known American, respected and loved during a time when few women achieved national influence.

Her early life was conventional enough.Trained as a nurse, she met and married a physician, with whom she had three sons. She was living the stereotypical life of a young matron in Allegheny (now part of Pittsburgh), when her husband’s investments evaporated during a stock market crash. She began writing as a means to supplement the family income.

Rinehart became a prolific writer. In addition to her mysteries, she wrote serious fiction, plays, poems, magazine articles, and editorials. Her regular contributions to the Saturday Evening Post were immensely popular and helped the magazine mold middle-class taste and manners.

In this fascinating account of a woman ahead of her time, Cohn illuminates the tensions that pervaded Rinehart’s life.Rinehart’s commercial success conflicted with her domestic roles of wife and mother; she often endured periods of illness and depression but also pursued adventure, including a job as the first woman war correspondent at the Belgian front during World War I. Throughout, Cohn presents Rinehart as a woman of many complexities whose zest for life always prevailed.

4-0 out of 5 stars look for it
Mary Roberts Rhinehart was at one time as popular as Agatha Christie. She's a forgotten mother of literary suspense in America. I got into Rhinehart when I was a teenager reading old gothics and suspense paperback from the library. The biography is not exciting but it's a solid and overdue look into the life of a literary phenomenon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for!
I've had the 1939 edition of "My Story" for years, and I've beenwanting this one for almost as many years.I am so happy to have found it. It was well worth the high price tag, too. This edition of "MYStory" is well bound and a nice addition to my MRR collection. The 17years she added was all new Rinehart writing. Some of the items I knewfrom other sources, but she still wrote better than most of us.For hertime, MRR was very honest, very real, and in "My Story" sheshares her own heartbreaks, as well as the glory of being so famous.Areal "lady" and a truly great writer. ...
