5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work.
The book is EXCELLENT by Catedra which analyzes the 'obra' in detail. Excellent book and great story by Rojas and his crtizers.

4-0 out of 5 stars La Celestina
A classic Spanish literature story written in the Old Style Spanish by fernando De Rojas.Excellent reading and an excellent story with modern applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Una joya de la literatura europea.

5-0 out of 5 stars A forgotten and ignored classic
Celestina is amusing, ironic, and while the prose and dialogue is long and descriptive, it is never boring- I really enjoyed this play. A note to the person who claims to be the author: Celestina was written in 1499, and itis widely assumed the author lived circa the same time. So, congratultionson your 500th birthday. :)

Product Description

... Product Description
The Celestina is considered by scholars to be the first European novel. Written in fifteenth-century Spain, this masterpiece is remarkable for its originality, depth, handling of dialogue, and drawing of character. The novel's focus is the character of Celestina, who dominates the scene. An old bawd brimming with salty wisdom derived from a vigorous and sinful life, she is one of the great creations of all literature and holds a secure place beside her two compatriots, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. This Spanish classic, the greatest of the forebears of Cervantes, was originally published anonymously, in 1499; later editions bear the name of Fernando de Rojas as author. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From Falstaff to Figaro and Beyond ...
... all the European literature of 'lovable' old rogues and sly servants owes something to this fundamental classic of Spanish literature. Published in 1499, a century before Don Quixote, half a century before Lazarillo de Tormes, La Celestina has been regarded as "the first European novel." It could just as well be taken as the last Renaissance classical dialogue, however, since its structure owes more to the neo-Platonists and Humanists like Eramus or Pico della Mirandola than to any earlier prose. It's either a novel-in-dialogue or a very long play. The site of its first scene, a private garden in Salamanca, is still revered and maintained as a tourist attraction for Spaniards.

"Celestina" is an old bawd, a fat lusty, greedy brothel-keeper, restorer of maidenheads, procurer of virgins, maker of love potions. The two sly servants of the lovesick nobleman, Calisto, have been acquainted with her since their childhoods; they know the best and the worst of her. Melibea, sole daughter of a family of note, is the object of Calisto's infatuation and of Celestina's wiles. The whole affair is rollickingly funny, in theraunchiest vein of Chaucer or Boccaccio, until the cascading tragedy of the conclusion: a murder, an execution, a fatal accident, and a suicide all in the last few pages. As you'd expect in a Renaissance dialogue, there are extended philosophical discourses, some astringently ironic, some sincerely worldly-wise.

Leslie Byrd Simpson has given us quite a readable, enjoyable translation into modern but not slangy English. If you can't read Spanish at all, this is the little edition to get; if you have some Spanish and choose to struggle, I'd recommend one of the bi-lingual editions, and if your Spanish is good, well, chances are you've already encountered La Celestina. Spanish in 1499 retained a lot of the flexibility of word order of its Latin roots; you'll find verbs at the ends of sentences and other such inversions, but the vocabulary and inflections are closer to modern Spanish than 15th C English is to modern American. In any format, in any language, it's a book you ought to know, and it's only a fraction of the length of Don Quixote! ... Read more

Product Description
The racy and irreverent Spanish tragicomedy that is considered the first European novel-in a spirited new translation

A Spanish Romeo and Juliet, Celestina was published in 1499 and became Spain's first-ever bestseller. Readers thrilled to the salty character of Celestina and her world of prostitutes and black magic even as they mourned the fate of Calisto and Melibea, the young lovers she unites using her wiles as a seller of perfumes and potions. Fernando de Rojas's exhilarating mix of street wit, obscenity, and cultured rhetoric mark Celestina as a masterpiece: an original, explosive, genre-defying work that paved the way for the picaresque novel and for Cervantes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Penguin Publishing should be ashamed
Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how good La Celestina is because Penguin Publishing insists on charging $12.99 for an eBook and $10.88 for the paperback. Please, please, do not purchase this book at Penguin's ridiculous prices. La Celestina is a true classic and this translation is a great improvement - so check it out from the local library.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a treasure!
CELESTINA is quite a treasure. To think that it took all these years of studying literature for me to finally be introduced to a beginning of such monumental influence. The actual read is easy and deceptively benign until you start thinking about the church in Spain and Europe in the late 1400s and the courage that Rojas must have had to write this novel and the publisher to publish it.People were burned at the stake for less. Then, to realize that such greats as the great Cervantes came AFTER this and that its influence gave encouragement to such as Borges, Marques, and so on is amazing.I hope that the Penquin blog, which will begin soon, will further enlighten me about this charming text. ... Product Description
