4-0 out of 5 stars Good stories about different cultures
Rojas takes advantage of his extensive anthropological field work among different indigenous peoples of Mexico, to write concise and short stories which acutely portrait these ethnic groups, what their culture is like, and what kind of lives they lead. Each one of the twelve stories is about a specific ethnical group, so the reader gets a sense of the variety and differences among these groups. The stories go from the extraordinary to the everyday aspects of life. Rojas was a good anthrpologist, and that is reflected in the fact that his stories are not told from an "afar" Western point of view, which tends to emphasize the "exotic", but instead try to penetrate into the vision and collective soul of these groups. The general tone is melancholic, fatalist, magical, and full of references to the rites and beliefs of Mexican indians.

Now that the Zapatista uprising has brought up the issue of indigenous peoples, it should be healthy that people interested take a look at the wide variety of cultures and visions of these peoples, a first-hand account by one man who really got to live among them. Many prejudices and commonplaces will be changed after reading this. But, most of all, it is good literature, and that should suffice. ... Read more

Product Description
Is Nazarin a latter-day Christ or a Quixotic fool?Saintly, mysterious, irritating, he attampts to set up an alternative society based on non-resistance to evil and the rejection of private property--often with hilarious results.

A strikingly modern work, it is at once a serious discussion of the roots of Christianity, an exploration of abnormal psychology, a critique of bourgeois materialism, and a brilliant exercise in comedy. This new translation does full justice to the richness and rhythm of Galdos's style, and makes available for the first time in English this important late work of Spain's greatest nineteenth-century novelist. ... Product Description
Solitaire of Love, an achingly lyrical novel by internationally acclaimed Latin American writer Cristina Peri Rossi, explores the sense of emotional exile that sexual passion can evoke. Only the fourth book of Peri Rossi’s to be translated into English—the others are The Ship of Fools, A Forbidden Passion, and Dostoevsky’s Last Night—Solitaire of Love showcases the mesmerizingly rhythmic language that has become the trademark of this award-winning and prolific author of novels, essay collections, poetry, and short stories.

Tracing the course of a relationship as it evolves into uncompromising self-destruction, the narrator of Solitaire of Love becomes addicted to his own passion and to the body of his beloved. Erotic, romantic love becomes bewitchment, producing a heightened state where time is measured in the rhythms of a chosen body and pride becomes subservient to obsession. The specifics of this other body trump any claim to ordinary existence for the narrator, as sex becomes a kind of idolatrous slavery and love becomes a mechanism for self-immolation. As in Peri Rossi’s other works, an ambiguous sense of gender and sexuality arise from her uniquely experimental prose and mystically erotic logic. Language is subsumed into this process as a way to bear witness, to transfix and capture the love object. The limbo of obsession, as described by Peri Rossi, creates an infantilizing brand of loneliness, broken by flashes of joy, insight, fury, and fear.

This novel was originally published in Spanish in 1988. ... Read more

this is stunning. words cannot express.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tasty treat
Detailing an intense love affair down to its minute parts, "Solitaire Of Love" is a gorgeous portrait of how loving someone so intensely is as glorious as it is painful. The male narrator loves Aida, but knows that one day she may leave him as she did her husband and her other lovers. She becomes his oxygen, his reason, his erotic muse, which all ultimately proves his undoing. Because to love someone is a personal, private thing, like a game of solitaire, that only the one can enjoy fully. Reminiscent of Violette Leduc's "Thérèse And Isabelle", Slavenka Drakulic's "The Taste Of A Man", and Kate Millett's "Sita", Peri Rossi's magnificent story is a seductive look at the realities of sexual passion.

5-0 out of 5 stars a passionate and analytical book about love
To simply call Solitaire of Love a novel would not be doing it justice, both intencely passionate, and bitingly analytical, Cristina Peri Rossi delivers her cynical philosophy of love to the reader desguised as a love letter. Solitaire of love (the fourth book of Peri Rossi's translated into English) follows the obsessive relationship of an unnamed narrator and Aida, the woman he loves to the point of addiction and destruction. The entire book reads like a dream, containing surreal and meaningful details of life, along with the foggy illusions of sleep.Peri Rossi, like a good psychoanalyst, breaks the book down to its most elemental meaning, decoding what is often encoded during simple day to day interactions.Perri Rossi deals with relationships, sex, and desire with an uncompromising certainty, revealing even the most mysterious of human emotions without ever loosing their beauty and mystery. Although Solitaire of Love is one of the most unabashedly lyrical of Peri Rossi's books, it never stoops to being sentimental or cliched. It is certain to delight the reader who is in love as much as the reader who is out of love.

Product Description
PREFACE TO REVISION AIn the interim since the original writing and publication of High Energy Laser (HEL) Lethality Data Collection Standards,, February 2007, there have been developments in the technologies available for conducting laser effects tests, some new approaches to diagnostics have come to light, and the authors have gained additional insights from the intense laser testing activity of the last two years. For these reasons, this first revision to the standards document is being published. In particular, the first two standards on power and irradiance measurements, respectively, have been expanded. Two new standards covering thermal absorptance measurements and EO system measurements and characterization have been added. The section on reporting of uncertainty of measurement results has been expanded to clarify key concepts in this critical area.It is important to note that the development of the Data Collection Standards evolved primarily from a laboratory testing perspective. As short wavelength lasers of higher power become available and approached weapon grade performance, more and more laser lethality testing is moving out of the laboratory to outdoor ranges and into more realistic environmental conditions. The diagnostics for these tests require characterization of the atmosphere in which the beam propagates; the target plane irradiance spatial profile on moving targets and the thermal response of the moving targets. These are challenging measurements and programs are currently in progress to provide technical solutions to these diagnostic problems. It is anticipated that another revision to the Data Collection Standards will be undertaken in the next few years to cover these issues in support of future laser lethality programs.Joseph S.
