5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant primer on the thought of Adam Smith
I couldn't disagree more with the review of Max Hayes. It would and does shock people to learn that Adam Smith wasn't primarily an economist as we think of the term. The fact that his work was centered around moral philosophy and making people "decent" is widely unknown and most people have never even heard of The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Robert Heilbroner said it best when he called Smith "the most quoted and least read of the worldly philophers."

This book is not a biography of Smith, which would probably be pretty boring. It is an examination of his ideas. Muller starts by placing the book in its intellectual context of earlier traditions. Than he turns to an examination of Smith's work as a whole. This is important because to often Smith is limited to The Wealth of Nations, which is only one element of his thought. Muller examines The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the Lectures on Jurisprudence to form a more complete picture of Smith as a moral philisopher.

The most important element of this book is the demonstration that Smith was not a defender of unrestrained greed. Smith sought to defend and construct institutions that would channel individual self-interest into benefical results for the whole of society. Nor was he an enemy of government. While it is true that he thought government often proved a danger to the market because of the influence of what we call special interests, Smith did not reject government regulation totally. In fact he argued for regulation of banking and interest rates and advocated using the government to try and correct the negative effects capitalism had on the intellect of the people through public financed education.

Muller writes a compelling book demonstrating that Smith is not the proto-libertarian so many people claim. That in fact Smith would probably be quite dismayed at the uses to which his thoughts have been applied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another Book on Smith
This book is an uninspiring analysis of Smith's work.Nobody who has even a cursory knowledge of Smith's writings would be surprised by what Muller has to say.The basic point that Smith was not a philosopher of unbridled greed is unsurprising. It is not that the thesis of the book is wrong, but it is simply something that could have been said in an article or less.Obviously a lot of hard work went into the book, but it is the product of a mediocre mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars a very informative book

I am sure that anyone interested in the history of ideas will enjoyreading this book for its clear exposition of Smith's ideas and theirrelevance to today's economic, social, and political issues.Muller has ascholar's mastery of Smith's writings as well as a broad knowledge of theirintellectual antecedents. The style is jargon-free. ... Book Description
This book reexamines Adam Smith's major works from a philosophical point of view.Werhane shows how Smith's three major works, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Lectures on Jurisprudence, and The Wealth of Nations present a progressive and unified set of theses. This careful study attacks the
caricature of Adam Smith as a radical individualist who argued that government should play no role in economic affairs, and that the market is autonomous and self-regulating.Werhane shows that Smith argues that human beings are not motivated merely by self-interest in economic affairs nor is the
market an autonomous regulator. An economy functions adequately only when free economic actors act with prudence, when there is cooperation and coordination of competitive activities, and where competition is balanced in the context of a societal framework of justice.Werhane argues that a careful
reading of Smith's major works show that it is justice, not self-interest or benevolence, that is the most basic virtue to Smith, and that a system of natural jurisprudence is necessary for a viable as well as an ideal political economy. ... Read more

Book Description

In this reexamination of the political legacy of Adam Smith, McLean argues that Smith was a radical egalitarian and that his work supported the ideas behind the French Revolution and his Theory of Moral Sentiments crystallized the radically egalitarian philosophy of the Scottish Enlightenment. Bringing Smith into full view, showing how much of modern economics and political science was influenced by the Scottish thinker, and locating his intellectual heritage firmly within the context of the Enlightenment, McLean addresses the international links between American, French, and Scottish histories of political thought.

Book Description
Since the celebration of the bicentenary of The Wealth of Nations, the last twenty years have seen a burgeoning interest in Adam Smith's contribution to economics.Jan Peil's book aims to provide a new model for interpreting Smith's contribution to economic science.

This model elucidates Smith's vision of the free market economy by placing it in the historical circumstances of the time.In the first part of the book the author discusses how we should read Smith and outlines the new hermeneutical model of interpretation of his economic thought. For example, in reviewing The Wealth of Nations, the author places Smith's work firmly in the context of moral philosophy and the debate on the sense and meaning of the emerging commercial society which was taking place in the 18th century. In discussing Smith's economics, the author clearly focuses on the question: why should we re-read Smith and according to which model of interpretation? Finally, he discusses the relevance of reinterpreting Smith's economics as part of moral philosophy for today's debate on the principles of economics.

This innovative book will be of great interest to historians of economic thought and political economy, scholars and students of the philosophy and methodology of economics and all those interested in Adam Smith and his relevance for economics today. ... Read more

Book Description
Adam Smith (1723-1790) is perceived, through his best-known book, An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, as the founder of economics as a science. His thought has shaped modern ideas about the market economy and the role of the state in relation to it. Yet Smith needs to be recognized as more than this, as a man of letters, moralist, historian, and critic, as well as an economist, if we are to get full value for his ideas and perspectives in contemporary applications.Ian Simpson Ross is the biographer of Lord Kames, Smith's patron, and of the Scottish poet William Dunbar, and has edited, with E C Mossner, Smith's correspondence for the Glasgow edition of his works. In this, the first full-scale biography of Adam Smith for a hundred years, Ross brings his subject in to historical light as a thinker and author by examining his family circumstance, education, career, and social and intellectual circle, including David Hume and Francois Quesnay, revealed through his correspondence, archival documents, the reports of contemporaries, and the record of his publications.Readers will meet Smith as a student at a lively Glasgow and sleepy Oxford; freelance lecturer in rhetoric; innovative university teacher; tutor travelling abroad with a Duke; acclaimed political economist; policy advisor to governments during and after the American crisis; and finally, if paradoxically in view of his tenets, a Commissioner of Customs coping with the free traders in the smuggling business. This is the life of a Scottish moral philosopher whose legacy of thought concerns and affects us all.Its lively and informed account will appeal to those interested in the social and intellectual milieu of the eighteenth century, and in scottish history.Economists and philosophers will find much to read about the history of their disciplines, supported by full documentation. ... Those who are not looking for an academic biography should check out Adam Smith: The Man and His Works by E. G. West. It's concise, elegantly written, and keenly insightful.Only specialists and academics need bother with Ross's tome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid account of his life's impact on Smith's writing.
Easy to read in spite of the larger-than-life reputation of Adam Smith.Presents Adam Smith the man as a bit of an absent minder professor who talked to himself.

However, the book shines in connecting Smith's lifeexperiences to their effect on his thinking and writing.Extensive use ismade of Smith's correspondence to flesh out ideas presented in hispublished works. The author is clearly more comfortable with the pedigreeof thought behind "The Theory of Moral Sentiment" rather than"The Wealth of Nations", but Smith's ecomonics are still giventhorough treatment. The disconnect between Smith's free trade theories andhis work as a Commissioner of Customs is explored to the full.

A quickread and a delightful look into the Scottish Enlightenment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine insight into Smith and an 18th centurylife.
This is an extraordinarily interesting biography, especially for its insight into the very different world of 18th century Scotland.Smith's student start at Glasgow University with six professors, at which and education could be obtained for 10 pounds a year. His first book -- A Theory of Moral Sentiments -- in which he developed his concepts of morality, and which he kept revising along with A Wealth of Nations until his death. His firstprotest against tariffs -- an import duty on oats into the city of Glasgow, which would be unfair to his students who brought oats and peas from home and lived on 1 or 2 pounds a year for food. Writing is a bit turgid, eighteenth centuryish. Still, I keep thinking about the bits and pieces of the life of this most interesting man. ... Read more

Product Description

"Dennis Rasmussen has written a fine book on Adam Smith's defense of commercial society as a response to Rousseau. As Rasmussen demonstrates, Smith not only took Rousseau's critique of commercial society seriously, but evinced a surprising degree of sympathy with it. By reviving Smith's dialogue with Rousseau, Rasmussen not only examines an important episode in the history of political thought, but engages a debate over the benefits and drawbacks of commercial society that continues today."-John T. Scott, University of California, Davis

"We have hitherto lacked a systematic and sophisticated book-length analysis of the relation between Smith and Rousseau. These two near contemporaries addressed many of the same issues-such as the emergence of capitalism, the relation between the free market and morals, the relation of commerce to politics, the nature of sympathy or empathy, and the relation of the philosopher to the modern liberal order-and yet often came to opposing conclusions. Dennis Rasmussen's beautifully written book will be important reading for anyone concerned with these two figures, and more broadly the Enlightenment and its critics."—Charles Griswold, Boston University

Adam Smith is popularly regarded as the ideological forefather of laissez-faire capitalism, while Rousseau is seen as the passionate advocate of the life of virtue in small, harmonious communities and as a sharp critic of the ills of commercial society. But, in fact, Smith had many of the same worries about commercial society that Rousseau did and was strongly influenced by his critique.

In this first book-length comparative study of these leading eighteenth-century thinkers, Dennis Rasmussen highlights Smithís sympathy with Rousseauís concerns and analyzes in depth the ways in which Smith crafted his arguments to defend commercial society against these charges. These arguments, Rasmussen emphasizes, were pragmatic in nature, not ideological: it was Smithís view that, all things considered, commercial society offered more benefits than the alternatives.

Just because of this pragmatic orientation, Smithís approach can be useful to us in assessing the pros and cons of commercial society today and thus contributes to a debate that is too much dominated by both dogmatic critics and doctrinaire champions of our modern commercial society.

Book Description
Adam Smith and the Classics analyses the influence of classical culture---the work of Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and the Stoics---on Adam Smith's thought. Vivenza bases her arguments on elements of Smith's work that can be shown to be precise reflections of passages from the classical authors, and on Smith's own acknowledgements that he was so influenced. The bulk of the classical nuances occur in Smith's moral and natural philosophy, but Vivenza also shows that the classics had some impact on his economic thought. The book represents a complete survey of all Adam Smith's writings, and is organized by arguments: natural philosophy, moral philosophy, jurisprudence, topics of economic interest, and literature. A further chapter discusses the very recent consensus among a number of scholars that Smith's writings display strong elements of Stoicism.Adam Smith and the Classics is a significant book, since it shows just how strong an impression the classical training had on the intellectual elite of the eighteenth century. So much so that the classics have left their mark on the scholarship and writings of the time. ... Read more

Book Description
Adam Smith and the Philosophy of Law and Economics is aunique book. Malloy and Evensky bring together a team of internationaland interdisciplinary scholars to address the work of Adam Smith as itrelates to law and economics. In addition to their own contributions, the book includes works by Dr. John W. Cairns of the University ofEdinburgh, Dr. J. Ralph Lindgren of Lehigh University, ProfessorKenneth A.B. Mackinnon of the University of Waikato, and the HonorableRichard A. Posner of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals.Together these authors bring expertise from the areas of law, philosophy, history, economics, and law and economics to a new studyof Adam Smith and his work.
Part One of the book presents new and important observations onSmith's views on community, ethics, the court system, criminal law,and delictual or tort law liability. In this part of the book Smith'swork is also examined from the perspective of his use as persuasiveauthority in the works of modern legal economists. In Part Two the`living Smith' is explored by way of a debate between two majorcontributors in the field of law and economics. The debate and itsanalysis create a unique and contemporary opportunity to study Smithas a foundational source in the midst of a current academic and socialpolicy dispute.
The understanding of Adam Smith that emerges from this book is new andcomplex. It will challenge the one-dimensional portrayals of Smith asa promoter of self-interest and it will correct many of themisinterpretations of Smith that are currently fashionable in theworlds of law and economics and the philosophy of law.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
Raphael provides an excellent introduction to the life and thought of Adam Smith. He indicates at the outset how diverse and contradictory political and social traditions have adopted Smith and how this father of capitalism was an important source for Marx. He describes the great friendship of David Hume and Smith and their mutual admiration and help. He outlines in detail Smith's moral theory which is based on a unique conception of sympathy, and seeing one's actions as if they were being observed by a host of spectators. But he naturally gives most space and attention to Smith's masterpiece 'The Wealth of Nations' published in 1776 just a couple of weeks after Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall'. Smith's great work was immensely popular from the outset and seemed to provide the most accurate description of economic reality ever attained. It immediately became a basis for government action in encouraging free trade. Smith uses telling analogies and examples in this work to make economic insights many of which are still with us today. Perhaps most memorable is the ' pin' manufacturing example which he shows to illustrate the tremendous advantage of the division of labor. One person making all the pin, or many people making all the pin are far less efficient than when the various steps of pinmaking are broken down and assigned to different workers. 'The Wealth of Nations' also has as a major theme the importance of free trade as a means of increasing the wealth of the nation. And of course its picture of a world in which enabling the the demand and supply ofindividuals to operate freely brings about maximum market efficiency. Raphael goes into considerable detail outlining Smith's economic doctrine and the consequences of it.
This is a valuable small work and a good introduction to one of the most important economic thinkers. ... Read more
