This prize-winning book tells the story of American women`s devotion to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes, one of the most popular saint in the American Catholic panthenon. 3-0 out of 5 stars My Grandmother from Chicago and in her 90's is enjoying this book
I have not read this book myself but I sent it to my grandmother because she is a follower of St. Jude. She is 92 yeaers old, and prays to him daily. She is enjoying it and says it is a "stroll down memory lane" for her since she is from the area and was a child and a young adult during and around the time the book is set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting stories behind a devotion
Orsi's book focuses on the human side of religion. In his book he gives a very interesting back stage view on what at a first glace seems to be a common and shared devotion - but in reality is a patchwork of ideas and practices of a very diverse group of people with very diverse histories, beliefs, desires and coping mechanisms. Orsi is a great storyteller. He tells not only the story of St. Jude (and his genesis in the depression years), but mostly of the people who venerate jude, and the unique stories behind their veneration. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is genuinely interested in people and religion and in the question of what people do with religion and what religion does with people!

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed history of St.Jude's popularity beginning in theUSA

Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friendof Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of.

Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.

Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever.
I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely dance book
This brief, poetic novel tells one episode in the history of a small, private ballet school in postwar London. As with all the best Godden books, the story is built through slivers of narrative and conversation, shifting voice and persepective from page to page, sometimes from sentence to sentence. The characters come into focus gradually, but there actually is a real plot, a critical path of present action amid all the recollection (future as well as past). The ballet community is vivdly portrayed, andthe physical characteristics of the theatre are depicted in loving detail.

Godden's books are a tad melodramatic and a tad romantic, but this one is suffused with an autumnal sadness that stays with the reader after the story ends. I adored this book when I was a young teen (and not involved in dance at all) and passed it on to my daughter, who is a dancer and loved it too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ballet Drama
The author conducted a ballet school in India, and her love of ballet shines through in this story, which pre-dates her equally lovely book "Thursday's Children".

Madame Holbein, the aging mistress of asmall London ballet school, faces a crisis when she realizes that theprogram for the season, marking her Jubilee, lacks anything original ornoteworthy.Madame, stubborn and proud, watches as events begin to unfoldwhich may crown her anniversary season with triumph.Involved in the dramais a young dancer/choreographer with a chip on her shoulder, a brilliantbut sodden set designer, Madame's long-suffering sister-in-law, and two ofMadame's favorite young former students, who can make or break the balletprogram.A satisfying story, rich with character and detail. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another winner
I have read every book in the Secrets at St-Jude's series and each one is better than the last.

Author Reid has managed to create characters that are smart, endearing and with extremely distinct personalities - which makes reading each book fun and interesting - you never know what is going to happen next and, thanks to the diversed personalities involved, you can always be sure that it will be entertaining.

In Drama Girl, we find that the girls are back - and this book is different in that Gina's friends from the US and Scotland will actually get to meet for the first time - with a very interesting outcome.

Let us not forget the "other" drama going on - in between Gina's boyfriend, school plays and jealousy - there is truly a lot of drama going on - and somehow, Gina is smack in the middle of it all.

I love this series so much and I adore reading about the direction each girl is taking. What does not work as well for me is the relationship between Gina and her boyfriend.Ever since the last book, I get the impression that Gina is extremely on the "fence" about him - at times thinking he is the greatest thing since slice bread and at others, thinking he is the biggest wimp - this relationnship just does not work for me!

Everything else, however, is perfect and I just love reading the daily going ons at this "private, secluded" school.

Reid writes very well and her YA novels are also enjoyable to adults (I am proof). She tends to write with a very down to earth style which I love and stays away from too many boring details and does not use methaphors that would be both unappreciated and unecessary.

This is a great read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Died in the Holocaust, Here is Healing Help
If you, like me, have struggled with memories of the death camps, memories of the horror that was Nazi Germany, start with Rabbi Gershom's "Beyond the Ashes" Beyond the Ashes: Cases of Reincarnation from the Holocaust. Then, spend some time with Jewelle St. James' "Jude". These are beginning points for your healing. Then, find yourself a good past life regressionist and go to work.Healing from a life that ended in the death camps is not easy, but living with the unresolved aftermath is worse. While I, myself, have done past life regressions for years, I seek help in dealing with my own memories and experiences from that time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reincarnation and Holocaust victims returned
This is a book which must be read.It is thoroughly readable, gripping and totally informative regarding an individual who remembers her previous life as a young Jewish girl who died at the hands of a Nazi during the Holocaust. For any who have an interest in reincarnation, this is a book to be read, especially if, like many, the reader has any feeling of being a victim (or indeed perpetrator) during WWII and has returned during the 'baby boom' years.

An excellent author - I am looking forward to reading her other books of past life memories.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the heart
Jewelle's book is one of an increasing number in the interesting field of past life memories. However, most of the books I'd read before hers were written by psychologists, spiritual leaders and so on. It's unusual to find something written in the first person, a true story about an individual's own journey to make sense of what can be a very confusing experience. "Jude" is highly readable and is written from the heart, allowing one to take the journey together with Jewelle, and discover what she discovers. The narrative is crisp and vivid. One of the things that intrigued me was finding out that Jewelle was born in a "caul" - a rare phenomenon, which traditionally shows that the baby is a psychic soul. In her case, that's definitely true, at least regarding her own past lives. A first-class read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Past-Life Account
"So, here I was, asking the owner of the B&B about the Nazi death camp. `You may find yourself re-born after Auschwitz, yes?' she asked. She had no idea how right she would be. At the age of fifty-two, I was compelled to come. It was time to face the visions that haunted me for years." - From the book Jude

For over twenty years, Jewelle St. James painstakingly delved into past life flashbacks, combing historical and genealogical records for vital clues to her startling visions and emotional reactions. In her first book, All You Need Is Love, Jewelle chronicled her 17th century past life connection as Catherine with the soul of John Baron in Petworth, England.

In 2001, this soul, which incarnated as John Lennon, warned Jewelle that he had a disturbing message for her--but didn't know if she'd be able to handle it. Suddenly, John Baron delivered an unusual poem that came forth via automatic writing. The writing came so fast that Jewelle didn't have time to read the sentences until it was completed.

This melodic poem conveyed a horrifying story both foreign and familiar--a tale about a Jewish German woman named Katarina and the guard who loved her so much that he shot her to death.

In her newest book Jude: My Reincarnation from Auschwitz, Jewelle details her investigation into the channeled poem, as well as her childhood obsession with the Holocaust. Although not Jewish in this life, Jewelle felt a strange connection between the prisoners of the German and Polish death camps in the 1940's, as well as Jewish people. In fact, when she once overheard a waitress mutter the words "Dirty Jew", Jewelle felt ashamed and ill--as if the words were aimed directly at her.

Riveting and redemptive, Jude chronicles Jewelle's journey to Krakow, Poland as well as her conversations with Holocaust survivors and those who lived in WWII Germany. As in her first book, Jewelle also explores fascinating synchronicities between her current life and her past life. For example, her own name contains an uncanny connection, as does the fact that she was born on February 12th (the same date the first Germans were transported to Poland) and was born at 2:41--the exact time WWII had ended.

What I found especially compelling was that Jewelle theorizes that many other baby boomers may be reincarnated survivors of the Holocaust--using this lifetime to heal the traumas experienced during that time. Equally intriguing is her theory that many children of baby boomers may be injured spirits from the Vietnam War.

On a personal note, I've always felt extremely emotional about Vietnam vets--often getting tearful when anything about them is mentioned. It's a rather odd reaction, especially since I wasn't old enough to know if its impact even though my Dad was almost sent there when I was a toddler. If Jewelle is right, that could explain my unusual response to that war, especially the returning survivors that were mistreated by American citizen and the many that still languish among the homeless and destitute to this day.

Absorbing and sobering, Jude: My Reincarnation from Auschwitz not only conveys how past-life echoes clamor for recognition through dreams and impressions, but also explains why many baby boomers find the Holocaust so familiar. If past-life exploration intrigues you or you feel a connection to this historical time, I highly recommend Jude by Jewelle St. James.

Janet Boyer, author of The Back in Time Tarot Book: Picture the Past, Experience the Cards, Understand the Present (coming Fall 2008 from Hampton Roads Publishing)

5-0 out of 5 stars Jude
Jewelle gives voice to many feelings people like me have had without being able to name them.
She also validates that horrible reality of the death camps, and the memories that many people -like myself- have struggled with, with the feeling of being "strange" to the rest of humanity who didn't seem to have them.
Thank you Jewelle, for your bravery in naming and validating. Five stars!! ... Read more

PREFACE. I SEND this laborious volume to the press with a clear sense of its limitations. But on this subject no more need be said; the shortcomings of the work will be at least as evident to others as to myself. The books that I have used most for the purpose of the commentary are those of Alford, Kiihl, and von Soden, that of Dr. Hort for part of the First Epistle of St. Peter, that of Spitta for 2 Peter and Jude.l Of Introductions I know at first hand only those of Salmon, R. Weiss, Westcott. Julicherr and Zahn, the excellent articles of Dr. Chase in Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible, and Harnack's Chronologie. No one can write of the early Church without feeling how greatly he has been helped in an infinity of directions by the eminent scholar last named. But the apparatus of a commentator on the New Testament ought to be much wider than it usually is. The Antinomians with whom we meet in 2 Peter and Jude cannot be understood from the New Testament a

5-0 out of 5 stars Subconscious
My subconscious loved this novel but I am not sure on a conscious level whether I should have allowed myself to enjoy it. Perhaps that's the mark of good writing. It was very entertaining. I was glad to see that there was not a villainous character based on me. I look forward to the next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern style wrapped up in thriller
This book doesn't fit into the thriller category- thankfully. I found it to be more in line with the southern tradition of Faulkner, Percy and more recently Norden and Woodrell. It's a weird and entertaining book, perhaps more character driven than plot driven. That's , of course, frowned upon in this genre, butthe novel rises above and I think crosses over into literary fiction. I also found this novel to be like peeling back layers of an onion, (there's underlying themes of faith, spirituality, honor, along with treachery and horror see excerpt: "Bobby stared at the old photo depicting The Vat's testimony ... He was a stocky, pugnacious fellow who seemed to be seething with rage behind his Fifth Amendment shield of silence. Across the table sat his interrogators, the Kennedy boys, seemingly invincible in their honorable crusade to preserve truth, justice and the American way. Yet,The Vat outlasted them.")
which is kind of the way it is with the milieu of theNew Orleans setting- you may think you know it from Burke or Smith but this book presents it with a unique and refreshing perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and unusual
I enjoyed this novel. Unlike the vast majority of New Orleans thrillers (New Orleans noir?), this novel is special beacuse it doesn't set out to see how many New Orleans landmark eateries it can cram into a run-of-the-mill,plot-driven, piece of pulp fiction. This book takes some quirky risks with its characters (a maritime attorney who has a copy of To Kill A Mockingbird always at hand, listens constantly to the Stones' Exile on Main Street while cruising in a Checker - cool!). Often the payoff is great. Everybody's a bit off-center in this one. Not just the villains. There's an energy and spirit in St. Jude's Secret that is the genuine article.

5-0 out of 5 stars St. Jude's Secret a great readand Update
It is noted that a couple of the customer reviews refer to several typos found in the subject novel. Those readers/reviewers received promotional Uncorrected Proof copies of the novel or purchased Uncorrected Proof copies that inadvertently got into the system. I have confirmed with the author and through orders placed and fulfilled that the Final Corrected version is in stock and is the only version available through retail channels.

5-0 out of 5 stars St. Jude's Secret
A real thriller with some meat to it.I am a maritime lawyer who enjoys a good legal thriller and this book hits all the high points--a great plot with some unexpected twists involving a lawyer with a conscience, a big, evil steamer line, the mob, accurate intricacies of maritime law--all set against the steamy New Orleans waterfront backdrop.I felt like I was there.

Good character development.Lawyer Bobby Grace must come to terms with his past through a hair raising experience that brings him full circle...and finally some peace.

Excellent first novel.I can't wait for the next one. ... Read more
