3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and old-fashioned
I found this novel at an estate sale among a huge pile of books.I bought it because I love old books, and one day decided to read it.The writing is definitely in an old-fashioned style, in a sort of Sherlock Holmes way.

The story takes place chiefly in the countryside, where the murders of the well-to-do Mr. and Mrs. Langmore become the talk of the town. The daughter, Margaret, is the chief suspect, yet like many of these old books she tends to be a bit of a frail and weak woman, and at one point even falls into hysteria.Enter Detective Adam Adams, from the city, chosen by Margaret's fiance to investigate the murders and to clear her name.Written in an easy style, it was a decent read, and entertaining by how clearly dated it was.Don't expect a thriller, but if you have a bit of time it's worth it. ... Book Description
God only knows who actually wrote this book -- it's credited to "Chester K. Steele," but that's a pseudonym that the Stratemeyer Syndicate used for this series.

That doesn't sound like an overwhelming introduction, and it isn't -- but you know, we think there's something here -- we like this book, or we wouldn't be reissuing itmost of a hundred years later. I mean, come on -- don't you want to know what lies inside the Mansion of Mystery? We sure did. And we found out.

And we aren't telling. ... Read more

Book Description
"Chester K. Steele" was a pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, founded by Edwin Stratemayer. The Chester K. Steele books are a mysteries intended for an older audience than the children's books like the Rover Boys and the Bobbsey Twins series Stratemeyer normally produced.

In The Golf Course Mystery, Harry Bartlett and Gerry Poland are friendly rivals for the hand of Viola Carwell. Unfortunately, Harry's family got the best of Viola's father, the Honorable Horace Harwell, in a business deal. Viola shows no favoritism, but her father is rumored to be distinctly cool toward Harry. The Honorable Horace dies in the middle of a golf match. The cause of death is poison. Was it suicide due to financial reverses? Or was it murder, with Harry as a prime suspect?

The reluctant detective Colonel Ashley, assisted by his servant Shag, must solve the case. The Colonel would rather be fishing, but murder has a way of interrupting his reading of Walton's Compleat Angler. ... Read more

Book Description
There was considerable excitement when it became known to the crowd, as it speedily did, that Harry Bartlett, almost universally accepted as the fiance of Viola Carwell, had been held as having vital knowledge of her father's death. Indeed there were not a few wild rumors which insisted that he had been held on a charge of murder. ... Read more
