Product Description
God only knows who actually wrote this book -- it's credited to "Chester K. Steele," but that's a pseudonym that the Stratemeyer Syndicate used for this series.

That doesn't sound like an overwhelming introduction, and it isn't -- but you know, we think there's something here -- we like this book, or we wouldn't be reissuing itmost of a hundred years later. I mean, come on -- don't you want to know what lies inside the Mansion of Mystery? We sure did. And we found out.

And we aren't telling. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and old-fashioned
I found this novel at an estate sale among a huge pile of books.I bought it because I love old books, and one day decided to read it.The writing is definitely in an old-fashioned style, in a sort of Sherlock Holmes way.

The story takes place chiefly in the countryside, where the murders of the well-to-do Mr. and Mrs. Langmore become the talk of the town. The daughter, Margaret, is the chief suspect, yet like many of these old books she tends to be a bit of a frail and weak woman, and at one point even falls into hysteria.Enter Detective Adam Adams, from the city, chosen by Margaret's fiance to investigate the murders and to clear her name.Written in an easy style, it was a decent read, and entertaining by how clearly dated it was.Don't expect a thriller, but if you have a bit of time it's worth it. ... An excerpt:

The others drove off in turn, and the play reached the final stage of putting. Viola turned as though to go over and see what the trouble was among the automobiles. She looked back as she saw her father stoop to send the ball into the little depressed cup. She felt sure that he would win, for she had kept a record of his strokes and those of his opponents. The game was all but over.

"I wonder if there can be anything the matter with our car?" mused Viola, as she saw the smoke growing denser. "Dad's won, so I'm going over to see. Perhaps that chauffeur--"

She did not finish the sentence. She turned to look back at her father once more, and saw him make the putt that won the game at the last hole. Then, to her horror she saw him reel, throw up his hands, and fall heavily in a heap, while startled cries reached her ears.

"Oh! Oh! What has happened?" she exclaimed, and deadly fear clutched at her heart--and not without good cause.

Product Description
"Chester K. Steele" was a pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, founded by Edwin Stratemayer. The Chester K. Steele books are a mysteries intended for an older audience than the children's books like the Rover Boys and the Bobbsey Twins series Stratemeyer normally produced.
In "The Golf Course Mystery," Harry Bartlett and Gerry Poland are friendly rivals for the hand of Viola Carwell. Unfortunately, Harry's family got the best of Viola's father, the Honorable Horace Harwell, in a business deal. Viola shows no favoritism, but her father is rumored to be distinctly cool toward Harry. The Honorable Horace dies in the middle of a golf match. The cause of death is poison. Was it suicide due to financial reverses? Or was it murder, with Harry as a prime suspect?

The reluctant detective Colonel Ashley, assisted by his servant Shag, must solve the case. The Colonel would rather be fishing, but murder has a way of interrupting his reading of Walton's "Compleat Angler." ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of synonyms and antonyms for difficult and often ambiguous English words that are encountered in other works of literature, conversation, or academic examinations. Extremely rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority in the notes compared to words which are ¿difficult, and often encountered¿ in examinations. Rather than supply a single synonym, many areprovided for a variety of meanings, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of the English language, and avoid using the notes as a pure crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. If a difficult word is not noted on a page, chances are that it has been highlighted on a previous page. A more complete thesaurus is supplied at the end of the book; synonyms and antonyms are extracted from Webster's Online Dictionary.
