The Boss showed him around the timber-line, and engaged him a place to board with the family of his head teamster, Duncan, whom he had brought from Scotland with him, and who lived in a small clearing he was working out between the swamp and the corduroy. When the gang was started for the south camp, Freckles was left to guard a fortune in the Limberlost. That he was under guard himself those first weeks he never knew. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it
I have a 1940s edition of the book and it's been my favourite for 9 years. Whenever I go move (and I move A LOT) or go back to school I always have it with me because it is my favourite book of all time. I had a panic attack because my mom had put it in a box and I couldn't find it. I insist that you read this book, and id you don't at least enjoy it a little ...

This book will be my favourite for all time (because they just don't write them like they used to)

5-0 out of 5 stars Freckles
Freckles is one of Gene Stratton Porter's best works!I am also pleased at the condition of the book and the speed with which it arrived!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Vintage Romance
I read this at an impressionable age and fell in love with stalwart Freckles and the Limberlost Swamp and his Angel.Pretty sentimental by today's standards, this book champions saving the forests and wetlands. The descriptions are beautiful and evocative.A great romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freckles
I purchased this previously read book as a gift.It is CLEAN in language and story line.It is educational (flora and fauna, etc.) and about people with good moral values. When I finished reading the book I wanted more, so I've read more of Gene Stratton Porter's books and shared them with my friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Historical Influence
I think what our friend "the lone dissenter" does not remember or realize is that Stratton-Porter's book, Freckles, and her subsequent book, A Girlof the Limberlost, is a product of her own life and the times in which she lived. It is not disgusting or elitist, but a report and example of how life was in the early 1900s.There were class differences and it was challenging for the 'low-born' people to believe they could rise above that. They didn't have our modern-day notion of arrogance and independence.I believe that Freckles and other books written by Gene Stratton-Porter are valuable as a piece of history as wel as for the literary content and unique storylines. ... I held the hat while the Deacon brought the board. Then with trembling care we slipped it under, and carefully carried the moth into the conservatory. First we turned on the light, and made sure that every ventilator was closed; then we released the Io for the night. In the morning we found a female clinging to a shelf, dotting it with little top-shaped eggs. I was delighted, for I thought this meant the complete history of a beautiful moth. So exquisite was the living, breathing creature, she put to shame the form and colouring of the mounted specimens. No wonder I had not cared for them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Moths of the Limberlost
I love the way this authors writes, but I am told that the original copy has wonderful colored pictures of the moths.

This book makes you feel like you are growing up with Gene Stratton Porter and helping her with her nature studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an incomplete reprint of a wonderful book on moths.
Gene Stratton-Porter, 1863-1924, was a naturalist, photographer, andwriter. This book is derived fromher "Moths of the Limberlost, withwater color and photographic illustrations from life" published in1912 by Doubleday, Page, and company. This brings me to my one objection tothe book. It has no pictures! The original book contains 106 of herphotographs including 20 that were hand colored. The pictures includemoths, their eggs, caterpillars, cocoons, and pupa cases, along withpictures of their food plants and the environment in which they are found. While photography of her day did not produce nature pictures of the qualitywe expect today, they are, never-the-less, an integral part of the work. Iwas very disappointed to find them missing. On a minor note, five versesquoted in the original book arenot in this one. Otherwise, the text doesappear to be intact except perhaps for a few references toillustrations.

Given that finding a copy of the original book for sale isdifficult, this reprint is well worth obtaining even without theillustrations. Gene Stratton-Porter was a keen naturalist and an excellentwriter. The first chapter is an introduction. The second is an overview ofthe natural history of moths. It is only slightly technical. She hasstudied the research issues and questions of the day and comments on them. While she guesses wrong on at least one point: whether male moths findtheir mates by smell, her opinions are always based on observations and herreasoning clearly stated. In some areas, her observations are at theboundaries of what is known about moths at the time. But even in thistechnical chapter, she presents material in terms of her experiences, bothexperiences with with moths and experiences studying the writings oflepidopterists.

Each of the remaining thirteen chapters deals with one(or in one case, two) moths. Rather than create a comprehensive book onmoths, she has focused on those that have caught her interest. These aremoths that she has photographed and, in most cases, raised from egg tocaterpillar to pupa and back to adult. Each chapter is not only an essay ona particular moth, is it also a bit of her own autobiography. In them shedescribes her experiences with moths from her childhood through the yearsshe spent developing the book. These include her great joys in discoveringand learning about the moths and her disappointments at loosing moths or atfailing to successfully raise them through a life cycle. The book describesher family's participation in her love of moths and describes thefriendships she made in the pursuit of these beautiful insects. It is awindow into her personality and her passion for nature. ... Read more
