Editorial Review

Book Description
First published in 1967 and based on extensive primary research, Jacqueline Bernard's widely praised biography of the remarkable woman known as Sojourner Truth is an important historical document, as compassionately told as it is engrossing to read. In the New York Times Book Review, Richard Ellman wrote: "Quietly factual when it suits her story, but lyrical when the demand arises, Jacqueline Bernard has succeeded on nearly every account. A good popular history." Truth was born a slave in 1797, gained her freedom some 30 years later, and at the age of 46 began a new life, traveling the country to preach about God and crusade against slavery. Known for her wit, her songs, and her great common sense, she electrified audiences as she championed women's rights, prison reform, and better working conditions. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This work is an in-depth analysis of the full breadth of Sojourner Truth's public discourse that places it in its proper historical context and explores the use of humor and narratives as primary rhetorical strategies used by this illiterate ex-slave to create a powerful public persona. The book provides a comprehensive survey of the life of Sojourner Truth, and includes a unique and authoritative compilation of primary rhetorical documents, such as speeches, songs, and public letters. This is the only major work to date that analyzes the breadth of Sojourner Truth's public discourse. The volume includes a complete and authoritative compilation of her extant rhetoric, including several versions of the same speech, reports of her speaking appearances, public letters published by Truth in newspapers, and songs written and performed by her as part of her public lectures. Three chapters address the rhetorical dimensions of Truth's public persona. First, an historical survey contextualizes her life and speaking from slave to reformer, placing into perspective the variety of experiences that comprised her background. Second, an analysis of Truth's use of humor focuses upon how she employed the strategies of superiority and incongruity in her refutation of opponents and the establishment of her own credibility. Third, a critique of Truth's use of narratives in her discourse reveals how both her speeches and songs rely upon three fundamental stories for their persuasive impact: her slave life and religious conversion, her use of the black jeremiad to portray race differences, and her tales of woman's strength and moral conviction. The volume concludes with a consideration of Truth's status as a "folk legend" and how she wished to be remembered. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Metis Woman's Stories -- Tough and Funny, and Knifeblades
Contrary to amazon.com, the title of this book is "Sojourner's Truth,"the truth in stories of someone pausing on her lifelong journey. Maracle knows who Sojourner Truth is, of course she's a liberationwriter, and her actual title is something of a play on the name, but not the actual name of the Black heroine who led slaves to freedom.

Maracle is experimenting with attempts to combine Native oratory and storyteller oral styles with more conventional ways to invoke the reader's imagination.

Her stories are narratives of individuals -- a little girl who freezes to death after being kept in school detention; a boy abused in one of the forced residential (boarding) schools Indian children were taken away from their families and put into in order to break the culture, the language, the tribes, the people; a fish packing plant worker who dies while on a drunken binge.

The people are not tragic; they are presented -- present themselves -- as tough and stubborn, and even though it is those qualities (coming up against too much power, no-win situations) that kill them, we admire their strength (while wishing they had more survival smarts and slyness).

One story is a knifeblade dripping bitterness, "Worm". This was written at the request of Maracle's 3-year-old son, and is effect is a true story, bitterness transfigured bywit into weapon."Who's Political Here?" probably comes from Maracle's personal experiences as a young revolutionary/rebel.Her Bobbie Lee, Indian rebel, period. The story's revolutionary-wife decides to leave revolutionary-hubby in jail overnight, so she can get the laundry done and get a good night's sleep for once.

In this strong book -- perhaps Maracle's best mature writing (because her novels are too woodenly didactic, she jerks her characters around too much and makes them speak manifestos) --Maracle thoroughly engages us in her lifelong struggle against racism and cultural genocide. There is no compromise here, but no strawman targets are set uip for easy knockdown blame, either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the life of a true American heroine
Sojourner Truth has always been one of my personal heroes. She was willing to stand up for what was right in a time when being a woman and being black and being an illiterate former slave were three strikes that took most people out of the public arena. Sojourner did more than stand up for herself - she thrived confronting slavery, advocating women's rights and proclaiming the Gospel of Christ.

This book does a pretty good job of telling her story, but it is not a particularly lively rendition. The facts of her life add punch on their own, but that is despite the writing.

I give this one a B, mostly because of the strength of her story, not the strength of its telling. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sojourner Truth, A Black Hero
"Sojourner Truth" provided many facts and interesting things that Sojourner Truth did, howver, it did not keep me interested for long, I felt that too many details were put in one place and I did not feel that I was in the book. Overall, it is good for class projects, but not that good for a free read.As I read, I learned many new things I did not know. Another good thing about this book is that it is short. There are about 90 pages in it and is clear and understandable. Even if you are in 2nd grade you could probably understand it.
