Book Description
Using more than five hundred historical maps from collections around the world, this stunning book is the first to tell the story of America's past from a unique geographical perspective. Covering more than half a millennium in U.S. history--from conception to colonization to Hurricane Katrina--this atlas documents the discoveries and explorations, the intrigue and negotiations, the technology and the will that led the United States to become what it is today. Richly detailed, visually breathtaking maps are accompanied by extended captions that elucidate the stories and personalities behind their creation.
Coasts and mountains, rivers and lakes, and peaks and plains are described by explorers encountering them for the first time. These maps can convey explorers' ideas of what lay over the mountains ahead, their notions about what was discovered, and their explanations of the land's potential for sponsors back home. The maps can also show a promoter's attempt to sell his project to settlers or a general's assessment of a coming battle. They chart the wars that created and molded the country: the French and Indian War and the War for Independence; the Mexican and Civil Wars; the numerous Indian wars; as well as more localized battles of conquest and survival. Readers can follow the progression of map creation and design as more knowledge was gained about the American continent.
Distilling an enormous amount of information into one handsome volume, the Historical Atlas of the United States highlights the evolution of geographical knowledge at the same time that it presents a fascinating chronicle of the expansion and development of a nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL REFERENCE BOOK
I purchased this book as an aid in understanding the geography of the United States at different periods in history, and it has fulfilled my expectations perfectly.I am writing a biography and this has filled in my lack of knowledge of how people moved from one area to another in the past, when territories became states, the building of the first railroads, who the first nations were who settled the eastern seaboard, and many other details pertinent to my research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great View of America's History
This is a outstanding book displaying our history through excellent hand drawn maps of America. Many maps presented in this book are from European mapmakers which adds to the "discovery" aspect you will find very interesting; you probably have never seen any of these maps before. There are sometimes four or five colorful maps on each page; the size of this book enables you to easily study the maps as well as provides plenty of room for commentary by Mr. Hayes. This is a quality large book that you will enjoy over several cups of coffee! A great addition to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A map lover's dream
Several things will strike you about this book. The cover's bird's-eye view of Boston in full color is a precursor of things to come. Next, the book measures 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches and weighs over four pounds. Every map and every page is printed in gorgeous color. The layout is superb, and most important, the historical information the author gives on these important maps is accurate and well researched.
How can such a magnificent book be published at this price? By having it printed by C&C Offset Printing Co. in China. Incredible.
The author begins, "The story of America's past has been told in many different ways, but never before in any comprehensive form from the unique geographical perspective allowed by the study of original maps."The author embarks on a broad journey covering more than 500 years from conception to colonization and on to the Cold War - from 1492 to 9/11, if you will.
The 535 maps illustrated include almost all of the significant maps which form the rich context of our country's history. Those of us who have been clamoring for history teachers to use maps to encourage students now have a powerful ally in this book. It belongs in every school library in the United States. We know students today concentrate on the visual, not the written word. Here are double page visuals that leap off the printed page to show our changing country. Beautiful bird's-eye views and maps printed large enough so the text explanations can be read with the naked eye.
At this price hopefully you'll want to send a copy to your kids or grandkids. If they're not impressed I'd be surprised and you don't have to tell them how little it cost. A great investment for bringing that generation into the map world.

AP US HISTORY EXCERPT

ABOUT THE BOOK
This book gives you all the tools you'll need to master the Advanced Placement Examination in United States History. REA's concise review is the perfect companion to your textbook readings and classroom discussion. And our six full-length practice tests, all based on the current format of the AP exam, mirror the actual test-taking experience.

We don't stop there, however. Following each exam you'll find an answer key complete with detailed explanations that tell you not just what's correct but why.

By studying our review section, completing all six practice exams, and carefully checking the answer explanations, you'll be able to completely inventory your strengths and weaknesses. Follow our study schedule (see page x) and when test day rolls around, you'll have everything you need to be completely at ease with the material.

Teachers, too, will find this book an excellent resource for the Advanced Placement course in U.S. History. In fact, many AP instructors use it as a supplementary text because it so comprehensively supports and addresses specific curriculum objectives for the course and exam.

ABOUT THE TEST
The Advanced Placement Program is designed to allow high school students to pursue college-level studies while attending high school. The three-hour five-minute AP U.S. History exam is usually given to high school students who have completed a year's study in a college-level U.S. History course. The test results are then used to determine the awarding of course credit and/or advanced course placement in college.

According to the College Board, students taking this exam are called upon to demonstrate "systematic factual knowledge" and bring to bear critical, persuasive analysis of the full sweep of U.S. history. This is why we make every effort to establish and build upon context for you, rather than encouraging rote memorization of disconnected facts.

The AP U.S. History Exam is divided into two sections:

1) Multiple-Choice: This section is composed of 80 multiple-choice questions designed to gauge your ability to understand and analyze U.S. history from the Colonial period to the present. The majority of the questions, however, are based on 19th- and 20th-century history. This section tests factual knowledge, scope of preparation, and knowledge-based analytical skills. You'll have 55 minutes to complete this section, which accounts for 50 percent of your final grade.

2) Free-Response: This section is composed of three essay questions designed to meassure your ability to write coherent, intelligent, well-organized essays on historical topics. The essays require you to demonstrate mastery of historical interpretation and the ability to express views and knowledge in writing. The essays may relate documents to different areas, analyze common themes of different time periods, or compare individual and group experiences which reflect socioeconomic, racial, gender, and ethnic differences. Part A consists of a mandatory 15-minute reading period, followed by 45 minutes during which you must answer a document-based question (DBQ), which changes from year to year. In Part B the student chooses to answer on two of the topics that are given. You will have 70 minutes to write these essays. The free-response section counts for 50 percent of your final grade.

These topics are broken down into thirds:
- Political Institutions (1/3rd)
- Social and Economic Change (1/3rd)
- Behavior and Public Policy, Diplomacy and International Relations, Intellectual and Cultural Development (1/3rd)

The time periods covered are as follows:
- Pre-Colonial through 1789 (1/6th of exam)
- 1790-1914 (1/2 of exam)
- 1915-present (1/3rd of exam)

ABOUT THE REVIEW SECTION
This book begins with REA's concise yet thorough 230-page review of U.S. history designed to acquaint you with the exam's scope of coverage. Our review covers these topics and historical time periods:

- The Colonial Period (1500-1763)
- The American Revolution (1763-1787)
- The United States Constitution (1787-1789)
- The New National (1789-1824)
- Jacksonian Democracy and Westward Expansion (1824-1850)
- Sectional Conflict and The Causes of the Civil War (1850-1860)
- The Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1877)
- Industrialism, War, and the Progressive Era (1877-1912)
- Wilson and World War I (1912-1920)
- The Roaring Twenties and Economic Collapse (1920-1929)
- The Great Depression and the New Deal (1929-1941)
- World War II and the Post-War Era (1941-1960)
- The New Frontier, Vietnam, and Social Upheaval (1960-1972)
- Watergate, Carter, and the New Conservatism (1972-2001)

SCORING THE EXAM
The multiple-choice section of the exam is scored by crediting each correct answer with one point and deducting one-fourth of a point for each incorrect answer. You will neither receive a credit nor suffer a deduction for unanswered questions. The free-response essays are graded by instructors and professors from across the country who come together each June for a week of non-stop AP essay grading. Each essay booklet is read and scored by several graders. Each grader provides a score for the individual essays. The DBQ is scored on a scale from 0 to 15, 0 being the lowest and 15 the highest. Each topic-based essay receives a score from 0 to 9. These scores are concealed so that each grader is unaware of the previous graders' assessments. When the essays have been graded completely, the scores are averaged-one score for each essay-so that the free-response section generates three scores.

The total weight of the free-response section is 50 percent of the total score. Your work in the multiple-choice section counts for the other 50 percent. Each year, grades fluctuate slightly because the grading scale is adjusted to take into account the performance of the total AP U.S. History test-taker population. When used with the corresponding chart, the scoring method we present here will strongly approximate the score you would receive if you were sitting for the actual AP U.S. History exam.

SCORING THE MULTIPLE-CHOICE SECTION
For the multiple-choice section, use this formula to calculate your raw score:

Number right -(number wrong x 1/4) = raw score (round to the nearest whole number)

SCORING THE FREE-RESPONSE SECTION
For the free-response section, use this formula to calculate your raw score:

DBQ + Essay #1 + Essay #2 + = raw score (round to the nearest whole number)

You may want to give your essays three different grades, such as a 13, 10, and an 8, and then calculate your score three ways: as if you did well, average, and poorly. This will give you a safe estimate of how you will do on the actual exam. Try to be objective about grading your own essays. If possible, have a friend, teacher, or parent grade them for you. Make sure your essays follow all of the AP requirements before you assess the score.

The statistical formulations used by the AP Program preclude our REA practice-test scoring system from precisely replicating the procedures and determinations of the AP Program. Bear in mind that the cut-off point between each of the five AP grades typically shifts slightly from year to year. This occurs both because one year's exam cannot be expected to be exactly as difficult as another year's and because no two test-take... ... Read more

The book is filled with informations, including unnecesary ones. There practice exams don't reflect the actual exams in anyway. There is no visual aid in the book.It is poorly organized chroniclly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
When I showed up with this book in APUSH one day, everybody was laughing at me.Everyone else bought the Princeton Review book.(Literally)However, this book got the best reviews on this site, and I was DETERMINED to use it.It's handy-sized, so I carried it around with me during school, doing some extra studying whenever I had a spare moment. This is not a flashy, funny book.I didn't WANT a flashy, funny book. This review book tells it like it is.It basically is a 215 page review of United States history from 1500 to 2001.It captures the major events and details from every time period from the discovery of America to 9/11.I just read it like a book.I was amazed by what I remembered. It writes in a simple, understandable fashion that allows students to grasp what it's trying to say without a lot of flowery detail. At the end are SIX practice tests.I took them all over a period of two months. At first, I was discouraged, because I wasn't doing as well as I wanted to.However, by the sixth test, I had done a lot better. There are literally, questions on the actual AP Exam that are nearly word-for-word from this book.I faced the test nervously, but knowing I'd done my best to prepare. It was harrowing, I must admit, but well worth it.Last month I got back my scores, and I got a 5.This book really did help me.It probably isn't the best for anyone. If you don't have a good memory, don't like reading much, or like to have a lot of extra junk in your book, this isn't the book for you. However, I have to say thanks to "The Best Test Preparation for the AP United States History Test" because it got me a 5.See if it'll work for you too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title really is true...
As a teacher of AP U.S. History myself, I can tell you that this is THE best review book on the market today. A few years ago, I purchased a set to give to every one of my students at the beginning of the year to use as a supplement to our textbook. The introduction of the book is very informative, explaining how the exam is administered and the exact formulas the evaluators themselves use to grade the essays and how that factors in with the multiple choice to calculate the final grade. The actual review content is thorough enough to provide an excellent "brain refresher," but isn't too dense. The six practice tests are excellent ways to review and see which areas a student needs to focus more on during their studying. I also highly recommend purchasing this same book but with the CD-ROM software to accompany it; the software creates a realistic testing environment, timing the student for both the multiple choice and writing sections as if they were taking the real test. The detailed explanations for each multiple choice question are also a great way to review, especially if you get a specific question wrong. I tell my students every year: don't go out and waste your money on buying more review books and practice tests, because everything you'll need to succeed on the exam is right in the book I gave you earlier this year!

5-0 out of 5 stars Five stars for a five on the exam,
as another reviewer commented. I bought this book mid-year to help me study for my AP USH unit reviews, and I have to say it was fantastic. The review is very concise, yet it offers all the facts you'll need to know on the exam. Also, the multiple choice practice tests were EXTREMELY helpful. Many of the questions in the book showed up on the actual exam, and I breezed through the MC portion of the test in half the allotted time, only omitting two questions.

The part I actually found the most helpful was the selection of sample essays in the back of the book. Though some of them took strange stances, they were great for tying specific facts together thematically. I mentally referenced them to make educated guesses when necessary, and heavily borrowed from one on the Great Depression to provide background information for the DBQ. There are so many sample essays that you're almost sure to have *one* of the topics (or one closely related) turn up on the exam.

I absolutely recommend this book -- I'll be looking for REA for my AP exams this year, too! My advice is: keep up with reading your textbook (I used American Pageant), start taking the practice tests about a month before the AP exam, take notes on the questions you miss (the detailed explanations to the MC questions are fantastic), and don't study the night before the test. Have a party. Best of luck in May.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped me, maybe you too
I found the AP US History Review book very helpful. The review was especially helpful - it was clear and concise. And the practice exams - "forget-about-it." The trick is that you have to already know what you are studying before you use the book because afterall, the book is just a review. It should only remind you of what you already know. The book is just brief enough to not cloud your mind and confuse you and is just comprehensive enough to get you everything you need to know. All said and done, I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the exam, but beware, you must study too. ... Read more

There is about as much or even less evidence that the founding fathers created this country as a "Christian" nation as there is for "intelligent" design. This is a book that preaches to the choir. If you have drunk the cool-aid, you will love it. If not, you'll see it for the job of fiction it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
"Be afraid ACLU. Be very afraid. Morris packs The Christian Life and Character with page after page of original source material making the case that America was founded as a Christian nation. The evidence is unanswerable and irrefutable. This 1000-page book will astound you and send enemies of Christianity into shock. Keep in mind that it was published in 1864 and has been out of print for more than a century. It has been newly typeset using a very readable font and added subheads. A new Foreword written by my long-time friend Dr. Archie Jones describes the background of the book and provides a brief biography of the author." --Gary DeMar ... Read more

Book Description
This book is an introductory history of racial slavery in the Americas. Brazil and Cuba were among the first colonial societies to establish slavery in the early sixteenth century. Approximately a century later British colonial Virginia was founded, and slavery became an integral part of local culture and society. In all three nations, slavery spread to nearly every region, and in many areas it was the principal labor system utilized by rural and urban elites. This is the first work that systemically surveys slavery in the three nations from comparative perspectives. Chapters focus on slave narratives, demography, economy, culture, resistance and rebellions, and the causes of abolition. ... Read more

Book Description
During the last months of 1943, when Allied forces of the South and Southwest Pacific were hammering at islands and airfields in the Bismarcks and Bougainville, Admiral Chester Nimitz organized two massive amphibious operations to capture the strategically vital Gilbert and Marshall Islands. Volume 7 of Samuel Eliot Morison's splendid history describes this mighty sweep of the Pacific Fleet across Micronesia, as well as the warfare in the remote and frigid Aleutian Islands.

The campaigns of 1943-44 marked a great advance in the art of war. Fast carrier strikes, new anti-aircraft and airborne weapons, better radar capabilities, and faster fire- and damage-control solutions combined to revolutionize amphibious operations; advances in photographic reconnaissance improved strategic planning; and all-terrain vehicles called amphtracs facilitated beach landings. In addition, the Micronesia campaigns inspired revolutionary innovations in logistics to meet the challenge of supplying and servicing an enormous amphibious force in an area with no large land masses, no labor, and no supplies or facilities of any kind.

Similar logistical difficulties characterized operations in the Aleutian Islands, compounded by hazardous conditions including dense fog, almost constant cloud cover, blinding blizzards, and icy seas. Morison tracks the Americans' recovery of Attu and Kiska as well as the gallantly fought Battle of the Komandorski Islands. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History as it should be written for the non-historian
This volume is outstanding, and brings the war in the central and north Pacific during the second half of 1942, all of 1943, and the first half of 1944 into clear and exciting focus.Admiral Morison, a distinguished scholar and a true man of the sea has given us the opportunity to live through the horror, fear, and victories of the Navy during our drive to defeat the Japanese. This book is truly a masterpiece, and is almost impossible to put down!I recommend it to all Americans who are living through our current crises.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pacific Drive Continues
Following the defeat of the Japanese at Midway and Guadalcanal, the United States launched a campaign to reclaim the two islands in the Aleutians which were occupied by the Japanese during the Midway operation, while also attacking the Japanese bases in Micronesia (Gilberts and Marshalls).Attu and Kiska were occupied by the Japanese and the thought of them on American soil outraged many Americans back home. Thus, a campaign was launched to retake them. After some hard fighting, the islands were recaptured, but the Japanese managed to evacuate their garrison from Kiska right under our noses, much the same way they did at Guadalcanal.

Operation "Galvanic", the invasion of the Gilbert islands, got underway in November, 1943.The main objective was the island of Tarawa. The island is completely surrounded by a dangerous coral reef, and the tides are very unpredictable as well.It was against these obstacles as well as a dug in enemy that the Americans made their attack. As fate would have it, it happened to be low tide when the Americans attacked, thus exposing the coral reef and forcing the landing craft to unload much further from the shore as was preferred. The Marines had to wade as much as 800 yards to the beach under horrific fire from the Japanese. The bombardment by the Americans did little to the well-fortified Japanese defenses, and they made the landings extremely costly for the Americans.Although Tarawa was secured in less than a week, the Americans suffered terrible losses which shocked the folks back home. However, the Americans now possessed an excellent air base to further their operations.

After the capture of Tarawa, the Americans moved to attack the Marshall islands, with the main objectives being Kwajalein and Eniwetok. The lessons of Tarawa had been well-learned.Both of these islands were subjected to a murderous bombardment by the American fleet and air forces, so the Japanese resistance; although spirited; was less effective here. The Americans managed to capture these islands in under a week and were now a step closer to Tokyo.

As with previous volumes of this excellent series, Mr. Morison has included numerous maps and photographs to expand upon the text. There are some good personal narratives in this volume as well.I recommend this volume along with the others of this series. It gives an excellent first-hand account of one of the early amphibious assaults by the Marines. ... Book Description
From the Opium Wars of the 1840s, to the Red Scare of the 1940s, through the Tiananmen "massacre" of 1989, and the Wen Ho Lee "espionage case" of 2000, Chinese-American relations have swung like a pendulum throughout the years. I The United States and China: Into the Twenty-First Century--now in its third edition and thoroughly revised and updated--looks at over a century of Chinese-American turmoil from a dual perspective, examining how two dramatically different cultures interacted and collided. Based on research by the author as well as by scholars in both countries, it examines the periodic cooperation and hostility between both governments and people in the United States and China. The book places special emphasis on understanding China's unique role in the Cold War and its centrality to the American obsession with the Vietnam War. It explains the interactions between domestic policies in China and the United States and their international behavior. The discussion of the post-World War II period, which constitutes a major portion of this textbook, has been completely revised to incorporate a vast new body of primary materials and research monographs written by Chinese and American scholars since 1990. Two entirely new chapters analyze Chinese-American relations during the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations and examine the paradox of how, despite increasingly close social, political, and economic cooperation, fear of China has again become part of the American political debate. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A great overview
I read this book for a history of foreign policy class in college. It's an easy read.Schaller is straight to the point with his anaylsis of Sino-American relations starting with the Opium Wars to George W.He also provides great examples and background information.

I enjoyed this book.Foreign policy is not my favorite thing to read, but Schaller's book makes it less painful. It provides the information, while being critical, without making his audience tired or bored. ... Read more

Book Description
More often than not, we think of a country's history as a narrative, a sequential tale of great people and important events. But sometimes it's more revealing to think of history as a map of the eras, inventions, ideas, and people that have shaped our country for more than five hundred years, from the first visitors to North America's shores to the first years of the 21st century.

Combining the unparalleled cartography and the extraordinary graphic archive of the National Geographic Society, this marvelous volume charts an engrossing web of connections, vividly displayed in a series of concise, self-contained essays and scores of maps that are the heart of a stunning visual chronicle that unfolds our history in a new and fascinating way. Each chapter is introduced by a time line that sets its subjects in context, then dozens of photographs, period maps, and illustrations capture the flavor of life in eras and places as varied as Texas cow towns and Tennessee coal mines, colonial Boston and gold-rush California.

Subject maps trace the great rivers and rough trails settlers followed as they fanned out across an unexplored continent, with a lively text that explains who they were and why they headed West, and are accompanied by a sidebar in which Mark Twain reminisces about life as a Mississippi steamboat pilot. We learn how an 1859 gusher at Titusville, Pennsylvania, led to a nationwide search for "black gold," and how John D. Rockefeller channeled it into Standard Oil. We learn how Eli Whitney's cotton gin, Henry Ford's Model T, and dozens of other inventions transformed our landscape; and we watch as social movements--labor unions, women's suffrage, civil rights--Sstruggle to include the disenfranchised in the American Dream. In these pages we find political battles and military campaigns, immigrants and industrialists, ordinary people and Presidents from George Washington to George W. Bush.

Wide-ranging, entertaining, and as expansive as America itself, the Historical Atlas of the United States is an important reference and an indispensable guide to the many intertwined paths that have led to the nation we know. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Historical Maybe, But Not an Atlas
I'll chime in with "catu11us" on this on most of the points raised in that review, but I have a few additional cautions for would-be buyers of this one.

My own copy was a gift from a sibling who knows I am always happy to receive and read history books (but not historical fiction).Unfortunately the nature of this book is at odds with its title, as the other reviewers have noted, but I'd go further:it's not a "historical atlas of the United States," it's a collection of USA-Today-simplified encapsulations of American history, with maps (some of them visually superb). This distinction is important because not only are major aspects of the U.S.'s historical development left out (as shown ably by "catu11us"), external affairs of contextually passing relevance, such as the U.S.'s controversial activities in Vietnam and Iraq, are not merely addressed but are given full spreads with *maps.*

With some of these, I find myself thinking the National Geographic should change its name to the National Sociopolitical, because it's not addressing its histories geographically at all and certainly isn't focusing on the nation in question, except in a rather "manifest destiny" sense which I consider abhorrent as well as contrary to impartial documentation of history.

Simplifications of history here often employ the lamentably popular personification style of "news" reporting -- more properly described as "journalism" -- in which, in this context, quotations from individuals' letters or diary entries are provided as being summarily representative of all people of that class at that time. This is a useful tool for historians when they back it up with further perspective but should not be abused this way, with complex and still-debatable viewpoints presented as absolutes.

Physically this book is a lavish treat, at least on a superficial level:the leather cover, the gilt edges and cover titling, the luxurious amount of space given to illustrations, the redrawn maps (although the previous criticism of the stylized pastels is just)....But large type masks small basis, and there's not even a whiff of a bibliography here to substantiate the breezy generalizations these "historical" assessments aspire to.

The issue of Slavery, for example, gets addressed but with throwaway lines such as "Americans joined in the enterprise, trading with African kings for what became more than nine million slaves."Which African kings?Where in Africa?Who has established that this even was the case? And does "Americans" mean "ALL Americans" or just some? Two paragraphs later, the second of those questions is nominally addressed:"Nearly 40 percent came from Angola, with large numbers coming from the Bights of Benin and Biafra and Gold Coast."But that's the end of the study of that question. That there was slavery within Africa itself, that other countries had slave trades, all of this (and other potentially illuminating perspectives) are dropped as if they didn't exist. And what's that tidy percentage assessment based on?

I'm sure that a lot of research and study went into much of this book's contents; it's unfortunate that the study isn't given transparently and with credentials beyond those presumed by the National Geographic Society itself. If you want a detailedImportant Points in American History introduction, this is probably very handy, and if you're just trying to understand how the U.S. has evolved to become the thing it is today this will provide perspective and depth as well as personalized story. For anyone interested in History, however, this is something to refer to with knowing caution:there's enough detail and illustration to justify tapping it as a resource, but there are also enough warning flags screaming of "spin" here that it behooves one to handle it with gloved fingers and a hefty shot of guarded skepticism.

Again, I think the National Geographic Society did itself a disservice by not providing a bibliography for this book; without that, it's scarcely credible and invites cynical appraisal -- and it *should* do, because at the other end of the spectrum it's lulling general-public readers into accepting these generalizations as established facts.I appreciate that they have tried to show American history "warts and all," but even that approach is curtailed to such pat simplifications here that one must question not just each conclusion but therefore also the presentation of information purporting to be factual. The National Geographic Society is surely capable of demonstrating its scholarship, but this book makes me wonder about that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where are the maps?
I won't repeat the criticisms of others. What did National Geographic think they were doing when they published a coffee-table history book under the title of "Atlas"?

1-0 out of 5 stars Historical it may be, this ain't no atlas.
This atlas hardly does National Geographic credit.Far better is Hammond's American history atlas, a slim 8 ½" x 11" paper- (cardboard-) bound edition.Better than either is the 1966 American Heritage atlas, a splendid maroon slipcased hardbound volume. It features superbly realized maps of all eras.Important wars - especially the Revolution and the Slaveholders' Rebellion ("Civil War") - are illustrated by clear maps as well as panoramic representations of major battles. The mapsare accompanied by brief informative texts, rather an innovation for the time. This first-rate production (The American Heritage Pictorial Atlas of United States History) isn't easy to find nowadays.

The National Geographic Society atlas isn't worth taking up shelf space, much less throwing money at.Allegedly an atlas, it has few maps - only a piddly 81 in 240 pages.By comparison, the American Heritage atlas has 424 smaller pages (including text) and 278 maps.

The maps themselves are minimally useful. That illustrating the Slaveholders' Rebellion, for instance, shows the Unorganized Territory (now Oklahoma) and the New Mexico Territory (now Arizona and New Mexico) as loyal. In fact, for much or most of the war, they were held by rebel forces in whole or part. The progress of the war is shown only by lines indicating major campaigns. These give no feeling of the development of the war nor the gradual defeat of the Southern treason.

Another problem endemic to these maps is poor use of color. The book uses mostly pastels, often almost indistinguishable colors, making its maps weak in impact and difficult to read.

There are no maps covering the North American colonial system in the 17th Century. New Netherlands, New Sweden, the New England Federation, Plymouth Colony, and others have disappeared.Coverage for 1700-1800 is spotty at best.Coverage here of World War I and the rise of the Bolshevik empire contains no hint of the American military intervention at Arkhangel'sk and in Siberia. The growth of the U.S. colonial empire in the Pacific (and elsewhere) receives no coverage, although some U.S. colonies appear on some maps.Et cetera.

The choice of textual sections is puzzling. Many are relevant to an atlas, even if nobody bothered to do a map. But others ... well, take a gander at some of the titles:**Capturing America on Film **Pictures That Talk**The Superheroes: Comic Books Take Flight (!!!)**Integrating Sports**The Small Screen**The Internet Takes Off **Relevant as these may be to an appreciation of American history, their relevance to a Historical Atlas is dubious, to say the least.

This atlas has only 1 map showing Presidential election returns (for 2000).The Hammond atlas rejoices in a complete set from 1790.National Geographic provides an index all of 2 (two!) pages short.American Heritage's index comes to 54!

If you want a GOOD atlas of U.S. history, get the latest edition of the Hammond. That also has a few maps relating to Latin American and Canadian history. The highly useful American Heritage is no doubt available if you can locate one. The new National Geographic entry isn't worth a well-worn farthing, much less what you're actually expected to pay. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
This helped me get a 5 on my AP test. My teacher recommended everyone to get one of these, and I'm pretty sure all of us did. This book is good to review on the AP test, but don't depend it to get all A's on you tests in class. It's not detailed as your textbook so you probably won't do well if you use this and not read your textbook.

The one thing I don't like about this book is that I think the pages should be bigger and the book can be thinner. It's easier to use that way, but that's minor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book!
The best review book ever. Got me a 5 on the Ap US History exam!
It discusses all the most important parts in U.S. History and its practice tests are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars REA really is the best test prep for APUSH
literally questions in the practice tests appeared on the real exam. i remember seeing a nit-picky question on authors and themes of an era that i thankfully learned the previous day in REA. the practice tests may be a little bit harder than the actual thing, but extremely close. the reviews on each era is thorough and the practice tests are plenty. the explanations to the answers of the practice tests are also extremely helpful. one tip is to read the explanation of the correct answer after you complete a practice test, regardless of whether you got it right or wrong to guarantee you have your information down cold. i would say invest your apush money in this book only and you're set for the test in may.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Review Book For APUSH!
This is the ultimate study book for the AP US History Exam, it has almost everyhting you need and will help you wonderously on the test, even if you only study the night before!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
As helpful as a book can possibly be. But honestly, like you're going to learn all of the AP US curriculum from one book? Just study in class, and use this for review, but definitely not as a learning tool.

The practice tests are great though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info!
This book provides a tremendous amount of information for many species and subspecies. It includes habitat, range, diet, etc. I recommend this book as a reference book for anyone interested in snakes. In my opinion, this book is not intended to be read from cover to cover, since it reads more like a scientific/academic reference field guide for general snake species info.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
This is an awesome book for beginners and professionals alike. I was amazed at the amount of information for each snake. definitely not small enough for a field guide, if thats what you're wanting.

Book Description
Enriched by the wealth of new research into women's history, No Small Courage offers a lively chronicle of American experience, charting women's lives and experiences with fascinating immediacy from the precolonial era to the present. Individual stories and primary sources-including letters, diaries, and news reports-animate this history of the domestic, professional, and political efforts of American women.John Demos begins the book with a discussion of Native American women confronting colonization. Leading historians illuminate subsequent eras of social and political change-including Jane Kamensky on women's lives in the colonial period, Karen Manners Smith on the rising tide of political activity by women in the Progressive Era, Sarah Jane Deutsch on the transition of 1920s optimism to the harsh realities of the Great Depression, Elaine Tyler May on the challenges to a gender-defined social order encouraged by World War II, and William H. Chafe on the women's movement and the struggle for political equality since the 1960s. The authors vividly relate such events as Anne Hutchinson's struggle for religious expression in Puritan Massachusetts, former slave Harriet Tubman's perilous efforts to free others in captivity, Rosa Parks's resistance to segregation in the South, and newfound opportunities for professional and personal self-determination available as a result of decades of protest. Dozens of archival illustrations add to the human dimensions of the authoritative text.No Small Courage dynamically captures the variety and significance of American women's experience, demonstrating that the history of our nation cannot be fully understood without focusing on changes in women's lives. ... Book Description
With this fascinating text, you will start to analyze the social and psychological dynamics of racism and the implications it will carry for you as helping professional. Authors Joshua Miller and Ann Marie Garran investigate the many facets of racism in the United States, examining how racism exists not only outside of us, but inside of us as well. Human service workers must confront and challenge racism in both these areas. Those in the helping professions are ethically obligated to work for a society of fairness and social justice and to provide culturally responsive services to all clients, ensuring equal access and quality. The authors demonstrate that it is insufficient to solely focus on social structures, services, institutional practices, or on changing other people. They show that we must also look within and explore our own biases and blind spots which influence how we view ourselves and those whom we are committed to helping. ... Read more

Book Description
This provocative book describes the sharp right turn the United States has taken following the election of Ronald Reagan as president in 1980. The treatment details how the policies pursued by the Reagan administration were a break from both the policies pursued by prior administrations and those pursued in other wealthy countries. The Reagan administration policies had the effect of redistributing both before- and after-tax income upward, creating a situation in which the bulk of the economic gains over the last quarter century were directed to a small segment of the population. The analysis explains how both political parties have come largely to accept the main tenets of Reaganism, putting the United States on a path that is at odds with most of the rest of the world and is not sustainable. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Getting a Handle on 25 Years
Good compact survey of economic and political trends since 1980. Baker correctly (I believe) sees that date with the election of the arch-conservative Ronald Reagan as a watershed year. The narrative follows chronologically from the 1980 threshold and its background in the feckless Carter administration. Graphs and tables are included to buttress his points but do not disrupt the flow. It's not a polemical or particularly partisan work, though a critical undercurrent is sensed from time to time. Social issues such as gay rights, abortion, and other leading movements including the rise of religious fundamentalism are also discussed but not emphasized. There's not a lot of depth, though he's clearly most comfortable discussing causal factors shaping economic policy. Thus considerable light is shed on economic policy, particularly during the Reagan years. Put in perspective, the rightward swing over the past 25 years is unmistakable, as business backers see an opportunity to jettison or fatally weaken decades of fettering regulation. Now is a good time-- with the Bush debacle-- to get a handle on what this swing has wrought. Baker's handy little tome is a good place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Entertaining

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book is great for information, history and tourist ideas but only if you are going to be on one of a few major highways across America. We travelled to New England and it was very informative and contained tons of historical information about major cities in the direct path of these interstates, however once you were off the direct routes we were on our own.It was a lot of fun though to learn about the areas we did, so it is worth your time to pick this one up!I would also recommend using this in conjunction with your favorite road atlas as the maps are not very detailed or clear.

If you are planning a road trip and need a companion, this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide!
This is so much more than a travel guide. The photographs are fantastic - completely inspiring and exciting. I bought this guide with one small trip to the Pacific Northwest in mind, and immediately expanded my itinerary. There is so much to see and appreciate in this country, and USA: On The Road seems to show every fascinating little corner, both off and on the beaten track. It's very well written - informative, fun, and completely unique. I can honestly say I have never found another travel guidethat comes even close to this one - what a find. ... Read more
