5-0 out of 5 stars THE best Samba book available
O'Reilly sets the standard by which all other technical publishers should aspire; their books are technical, dense, and personally, I love the pithy, no nonsense tone. I have never been disappointed with an O'Reilly book. This book continues the tradition of above par books and I can attest that hands down, this is the best book available on Samba.

Remarkably, the information inside is aging very well. While it doesn't cover the most current version of Samba, this book is by far the most informative and helpful on the subject available.

While the book is fortified with examples, screenshots, and an easy to read style, by far my favorite portion is on troubleshooting (complete with a "fault tree"). It is just a way of systematically approaching connectivity problems in relation to the samba server.

I mean, really, what exactly is "System error 53?" This book won't tell you outright, but it will help narrow down the problem to solvable proportions.

The included CDROM also includes a mirror to the official Samba FTP site, including sources, binaries, documentation, and utilities.

When I have Samba configuration problems, or questions pop up about Samba, this is the book I reach for. If pressed for time and pressed for answers by coworkers, I have been known to pull it off the shelf and lend it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great O'Reilly Book
I've beed using Samba for the last 2 years and this book helped me finally understand how to properly configure it in 1 night. Very well written and easy to understand. Topics like oplocks and network printer configuration are explained in an easy to read manner. If your using or plan to use Samba, you need this book. Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than you wanted to read, more than you wanted to know
Oh my goodness this book is detailed. This is truly a case of teaching a man to fish rather than feeding him. This book covers everything in grizzly detail. If you're not prepared to sit down and chew your way to being a Samba guru then get something else. This book is a long and I must admit a dry read but it's very powerful. It doesn't make light of the topic and it takes a while to read but like anything of value it's worth the effort. Excellent book, if you're using Samba in an office environment you need this book, you'll find out how to do all kinds of things you only dreamed of. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So helpful
Until I read this book, I was very unconfident in our family's co-sleeping situation. It seemed like everyone in the world except us had babies sleeping through the night in cribs from very early on. I'd read The Family Bed, but it didn't quite do it for me. I even read The No Cry Sleep Solution, but it wasn't right for us either. Since reading Good Nights I've found two other moms who have a family bed, and we have an informal mom's club now! I loaned one the book, and she is almost done, and loves it as much as I did. Mom 3 has ordered her own copy based on what she knows of the book. I can't wait to get mine back!

I have been so nourished and bolstered by this book. It contains more excellent information than I ever dreamed was out there. We made our bed safer using the chapter on safety guidelines. After reading the chapter on all the new scientific findings about hte family bed, I'm much more confident that we're doing the right thing. Even naps are getting much easier thanks to this book!

I loved the style of the author. Kind of like a wise and funny friend. Some of the anecdotes were a riot. The advice was sage and sound. Everything was very gentle, the book was very easy to get through, even though there were lots of scientific paper citations. I didn't even notice them until the end!

I highly reccomend this book to any parent whose baby spends nights in their bed. It seems to have something for every "level" of co-sleeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma Approves!
I was tickled when I found this book while browsing for sleep books for the youngest of my five children, who is about to have a baby. Back when she and her siblings were babies, they shared a bed with my my husband and I, and our family ended up incredibly close. I'm not saying the closeness was because of what people now call the family bed but it was a vital part of our children's young lives, to be able to sleep next to their loved ones and not have to be alone in a crib somewhere else. My mother told me I shared the bed with my parents when I was a baby in Ireland, so on it goes. My other children who have children have all brought them into bed as babies. My youngest wants to, but she is getting alot of pressure from people in her future mom's class not to do this. So I got her this book and I read it first, and it's charming and so very helpful, kind, caring, funny, fully of tips I wish I'd had when they my own were little.

She read some of it while I was visiting and she laughed and underlined and gave me such a hard hug I thought I'd pop. She brought it to her future moms group and showed them the first chapter full of scientific evidence that shows the powerful positive effects of letting your baby sleep next to you. The teacher said she was going to have to get a copy. She said the chapter on safety was "worth the price of admission." Now that's saying something, considering how she is one of those Ferber people. The book isn't preachy, as someone else who wrote a review mentioned, and that and it's sense of humor will probably help it break through alot of barriers with people like my daughter's teacher.

If you're wondering, my children left our bed fairly easily when it was time for another baby to move in. They all loved sleeping in the same room together after that until they became old enough to separate the girls from the boys. It was like a big reward for them to get to sleep in the big kids room. The book Good Nights also has a whole chapter on the process of helping a child move out of your bed, and I think parents will find this very helpful, as I know it can be an issue.

I hope it was alright to mention my personal experiences with this topic in a review. I haven't done reviewing before, but I think that personal experience in my case as a reader of the book is very important to the review.
Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool
This is a very practical, useful book for teachers working with writers grades 4-8. The 4-square method offers a simple, yet innovative graphic organizer which my students (7th grade reg. ed. and grades 5-8 learning dis./lang. impaired) found extremely easy to understand and use. The method is also helpful in notetaking from text or narrative, and the authors give some lesson ideas across curriculums.

The graphics are serviceable, but seem more appropriate for younger students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing "What Ifs" Indeed
Imagine what the US would be like if the Pilgrims hadn't landed at Plymouth Rock, the Confederacy had won the Civil War, JFK hadn't been assassinated, or the Cuban Missile Crisis had escalated into nuclear war, or even what if the Watergate burglary had never been detected? The essays contained in this book speculate on what might have happened if history had taken a different course in these and other important events in our history.

And they are fascinating essays. They describe a world that might have been. Events like the US delaying in joining World War 2, or how the US would have been viewed by the world after the "Two Days War," in which the USSR was almost totally destroyed, or how the US government would have soldiered on in the mid 1860s if both Lincoln & Johnson had been murdered, as was the original plan.

It's always an interesting and fascinating theory to think about events and how they might have played out differently had the circumstances and chances been different. The authors of the essays in this book have done a marvelous job of portraying their "alternate histories." It's enough to make the reader think "What If" about other numerous historical events not covered

5-0 out of 5 stars What Ifs? of American History: Eminent Historians Imagine Wh
In this illustrated third volume of the "What If" series on conjectural, counterfactual, or imaginary history, editor Cowley once again enlists the assistance of historians David McCullough (on the Battle of Long Island), James McPherson (on General Lee's famous "Lost Order"), and others such as Tom Wicker, Robert Dallek, and Thomas Fleming. Breezy, popular, and yet with some annotations (although no bibliography or index), this compilation entertains and provokes the already informed and whets the general reader's appetite for the would-be past. The essays demonstrate how events influence one another by showing what could have happened rather than judgmentally making a case for what should have occurred. Great for history buffs not quite ready for fiction, it is suitable for public libraries and general academic collections

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace. History often hangs on a shoestring ???
A very interesting book. The premise is some of the 'etched in stone' understandings of today oftentimes rely on some very tentative shoestrings. For instance; the Mayflower was bound for the Hudson River but was blown off course by a storm. Would the independent streak/ 'religious tolerance' nurtured by the Puritans have gone Episcopalian if they were in closer proximity to the main body of English settlers in Virginia? Historian Theodore Rabb considers the possibilities.
What about the battle of Long Island? If Washington had been caught in the pincer movement the British were about to spring on him, but didn't thanks to a very thick fog...would the Union Jack be flying over America today? David McCollough wonders...
Oh, the probabilities do mount up. What if the Confederacy had more competent generals in Kentucky? Would Cincinnati and Louisville have fallen to the CSA? Would we still be one nation indivisible or Balkans West?
The suppositions go on. This is an interesting book, one that perhaps should have markers in the margin...<>. The final story reminds us that if a security guard had not noticed a door taped open, Watergate may never have been discovered. Could that have hastened in the Reagan Bush years or is there an inevitability to history dependent more on the characters involved-- so that while history may have its 'shoestring' moments-- nevertheless a 'preordained course' will more or less be followed... I wonder... ... Read more

Even if you never use a single recipe from this book, the amusing commentary blurbs make it worth reading. Jay Weinstein has a great sense of humor which is shown in several little textboxes throughout this cookbook.
By the way, you shouldn't have any problems using recipes from this book. There are many yummy ones to choose from, with clear and easy-to-follow directions, as well as useful information on vegetarianism. I think this is a great book, not just for vegetarians, but for people who have decided to eat healthier by having a few meatless nights, or parents who may be struggiling to find something to cook for their newly vegetarian son or daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars 4.7 Stars for this must have book.
Please note: This book was released only last month so I'm not sure how relevant the reviews below are. I bought this at ANA's unveiling and must say that I believe that if you are going to buy one and only one book on US coins, this is the one that you must buy. It is great because it is chockablock full of utterly usable and vital information on all of the things that you are interested in when it comes to grading coins and indeed in determining whether you are dealing with true coin of the realm or a counterfeit. What makes this particular edition particularly cogent is its section on the State Quarters with photos to help with grading states MS-60 and above. This book also has an excellent section on Commemoratives which is a big help. Not all of the photographic plates are in color which is a shame because the black and whites are of absolutely no use when used to demonstrate the difference between an MS-67, and MS-66 and an MS-65: the photos are just not intense enough for one to really be able to see the flaws the editors are attempting to point out. There are color pictures which are a great help in making this comparison but they are reserved, predictably, for high end gold coins. My major beef with this and indeed all coin books to date is that the lowly, unloved Jefferson Nickel gets short shrift. Yep, barely two pages of commentary and no really great photographic grading aids. This is an especially jarring ommission in light of the newly released so-called Peace Nickel which, ironically, was launched at the same time as this book. Anyway, but for the grainy black and whites and the unforgivable nickel ommission, this book rates Five Stars. Buy it in any event.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
This book gives an excellent overview of the coin grading and the attempts to artificially alter coins to enhance their apparent value. The book is organized in essay format, with good flow between chapters. Numerous diagrams make this an easy read. As might be expected in a general work, some aspects of the work deserve a more complete treatment than they receive here. This is a good read, and a worthwhile introduction. I am not a "coin person", but I found this quite diverting.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that great
I bought this book at a store on a whim because I wanted to learn more techniques for dealing with "Nasty People." Instead, it was a book that identified "invalidators" over and over and over. The only definition that I'm left with is: Invalidators are people who make you feel bad. I don't see why there had to be pages upon pages of defining people who, basically, make you feel bad. Especially since, it only takes one sentence.

I was looking for practical examples and suggestions on dealing with nasty people and instead I found an author who seems to have written a vendetta against anyone that has made him feel bad or question himself. I don't care about an author's problems--I do care about an informed person who has tried and true ways of dealing with nasty people.

The last chapter has SOME examples and ways to deal with nasty people, but he says it's up to the reader to find his (or her) own ways. O.K., well then, why did I buy your book? I did give this book two stars because it was an easy read and helped to identify "invalidators."

A suggestion to the author: Rename your book to "Nasty People: How to identify them and gain some knowledge in finding ways to deal with them."

The most disturbing thing about this book is the amount of glorious reviews it has here. In my opinion, it isn't good and I warn readers that you won't be buying a book on how to deal with nasty people, but how to identify them. I suggest that a potential customer shop around on Amazon more before considering buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth 100 times its weight in gold
To be sure one of the best concise self-help books. This book should be read by anyone who experiences frequent and serious conflicts. Hopefully, the "victim" and "the invalidator" will both be able to read it, it helps with both coping from the attacks and how to recognize the attacks. "Nasty People..." empowers the victim to understand they are not helpless and they too have a responsibility to solve the problems. Nasty people behave like this ultimately through their own choice, ("made" not "born") and thus, they can do something about it and change themselves.

An Excellent, ethical, helpful book. at this price, buy several copies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy & Helpful Read
This book is short -- only 100 pages long. It's also written in layman's terms, so it's easy to follow. An easy read that may help you understand that just because you can't specifically point out why you feel bad around a certain person, that doesn't mean it's you who is the problem.

How many of us have felt bad around someone, but could not find a reason why? That's the doing of a skilled manipulator. The term "invalidation," in my opinion, is not a term you find every day. However, it is the very best word to describe this behavior and I'm thrilled that Dr. Carter stresses it in this book.

Reasonably priced, easy read, and it helps you look inside yourself to see if, possibly, you yourself may be invalidating people and not realizing it. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A precious resource, but I suspect it tames Nagarjuna
This book has been a treasure to those of us who had stared in consternation at K. Inada's translation or wrestled with the misprints in D. Kalupahana's edition. Here lucidity reigns. But there is something excessively dry and scholastic about Garfield's Nagarjuna. I think this is partly due to the fact that Garfield translates from the Tibetan, not the original Sanskrit. Compare his translation of Ch. 19, verse 1: "If the present and the future/Depend on the past,/Then the present and the future/Would have existed in the past", with Sprung's: "If what is arising here and now and what is not yet realized are dependent on what is past, what is arising here and now and what is not yet realized will be in past time" (which could be further improved by translating "atita" as "what has been"). So dry is Garfield's diction that his retention of a verse format seems pointless. The Gelug-pa Tibetan interpretation of Nagarjuna is a scholasticizing one, and loses some of the savor of emptiness and liberation which gives meditative point to Nagarjuna's laconic logic. Also, Garfield keeps referring to Hume and Wittgenstein in a way that further domesticates and scholasticizes Nagarjuna, making him a linguistic therapist who frees us from substantializations and reifications, but who also allows us to install ourselves comfortably in the conventional dependently co-arising world. It seems to me that in Buddhism this samsaric world is always painful, radically unsatisfactory, and that Nagarjuna is not just curing us of false theories about it, but is revealing it as radically self-contradictory even in its everyday pragmatic or conventional texture. To say that emptiness "is not a self-existent void standing behind a veil of illusion comprising conventional reality, but merely a characteristic of conventional reality" (p. 91) sounds very bland. Emptiness is not just any characteristic, but a radically subversive quality of our world, which it is by no means easy to realize. "The actuality of the entire phenomenal world, persons and all, is recovered within that emptiness" (p. 95) is again too bland. Only a Buddha can grasp the world in its ultimate emptiness and its conventional texture at once. The recovery of the conventional from the point of view of ultimate emptiness is not a comfortable restoration or even a disillusioned Humean resignation to conventions. It means realizing that the apparently solid world of experience is only a flimsy, provisional raft or skillful means, surpassed by the empty ultimacy which it can serve to indicate. "The eventual equation of the phenomenal world with emptiness, of samsara with nirvana, and of the conventional and the ultimate" (p. 101) is very, very eventual, so that only a Buddha can perceive it correctly. Asserted too early, too sweepingly, it can short-circuit the path to liberation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Demanding but satisfying
As Garfield states in the introduction, his analysis of the text is more from an analytical, Western philosophical perspective than from a "Buddhalogical" (his word) one. The result is authoritative, scholarly and a little dry. His presentation reminds me of David Brazier's presentation of the Abhidharma in his book "Zen Therapy: Transcending the Sorrows of the Human Mind." The experience of reading this book is very demanding, but also very satisfying. The benefits to be derived are probably directly proportional with the work one puts in to understanding it.

A more poetically compelling translation of the Mulamadhyamikakarika, along with a very thought-provoking introduction, is to be found in Stephen Batchelor's "Verses from the Center."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Prasangika Madhyamika view on Nagarjuna's masterpiece
The Mulamadhyamakakarika(MMK) by Nagarjuna is one of the most important scriptures within Mahayana Buddhism. It's the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way. Although other English translations exist already, Mr Garfield's rendition is the first that shows the Prasangika Madhyamika (Middle Way Consequence school) view on the MMK.

The MMK consists of 27 chapters which are examinations of fundamental theoretical elements in Buddhist ontology like Dependent origination, Impermanence, Perception, Aggregates (skandhas), Self, and relations between Substance and Attribute. The book is divided into two sections: 1. The translation of the 27 chapters, 2. The translation + commentaries.

It's noteworthy to mention that this book is based on the Tibetan dBu-ma rtsa-ba shes-rab, the Tibetan translation of the original Sanskrit work of MMK.

Garfield asserts in this book that Nagarjuna's goal was to refute the view of extremism of the Sarvastidas (All exists) and the other side of Nihilism (Nothing exists), proposing a Middle Way position. Pointing out the Two Truths of reality; Absolute Truth and Conventional Truth, Nagarjuna uses the Emptiness (shunyata) doctrine to show the reader upon examination that phenomena (both mental and physical) are empty of inherent-exitestence, but also that they are NOT non-existent (they exist within the Absolute Truth). Through these Examination one will obtain insight into the relativity of concepts and phenomena.

As a side note: Nagarjuna's goal is not to bring about a philosophical debate on metaphysical elements. Garfield points this out perfectly in the Introduction to the Commentary section of this book.

I have not read other renditions in English on the MMK, but so far this one is a very bright shining jewel in my extensive collection on Buddhism.

For further reading I would suggest Candrakirti's Prasannapada (Lucid Exposition of the Middle Way), which is a commentary on the MMK and it's best companion in my opinion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars USEFUL!!!
A very useful book for anyone considering building their own Shoji Screen or just wanting to know more about this subject. The images would have been better in colour but still a useful book, clear easy to follow step by step guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting.....
...some think that this is a true story and others, think that this isn't. Is it? Who know, but this is a pretty good read. Some parts were pretty scary, for example, the figure at the top of the stairs. Other parts seemed to drag a small bit. Sometimes that parts that dragged for me was in the way the author told the story. Perhaps an experienced author could have given more atmosphere to the story.

This is the story of the Lutzs and their experience in the haunted house the bought. Then 28 days later, they fled in terror, leaving most of their possessions. In this book, the reader will find out what made the Lutz's flee.

It all started when the priest went to bless the house and a voice said "GET OUT!" From that point time, the Lutz's lived in terror and nobody in that house was safe. Even the Priest that helped them was victim to the demonic forces that infested the house. The Lutz's went through a lot of horrific events before they left the house. Much more than I would have put up with. Even when the moved, the demonic forces followed them for a while.

The only problem I had with this book is the end. I wont' way what happened, but the way it ended....didnt' seem like a fit ending. There was more to tell and the author didn't tell it. I don't want to say the end was a let down, because it wasn't. However from the way it ended, it just wasn't a good place to end the story.

If you like true life ghost stories, then you need to read this book. Is it true? Who know, but it's a good story. If you start it, I don't think you'll be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who gives a flying frito weather or not its a true story.
I don't know why people go on and on about weather or not the Lutz's made it all up. The book is scary either way. I read this book as a teenager while alone in the house one night. We lived in a rather old creaky anti-bellum house. My parents worked night shift so I called my Mother. She arranged for my cousin to come by when she got off work at pizza hut at 2am. I convinced her to spend the night with me.

Thousands and thousands of books later I still have not found one to make me call someone over to my house in the middle of the night.

Even nights later I awoke and caught the red glare from the clock radio and screamed. I thought they were Jody's eyes looming at me from across the dark room.

I don't really care if these people made it up or not. It's great horror. I figure where there's smoke there's fire. They were probably creeped out about living in a house where an entire family was murdered to begin with, had a few unusual things happen, and decided to run with it and make a few bucks. I've always wondered if they knew about the murders before they boght the house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the movie!
I don't believe this is a true story, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a truly scary book! It's a good easy read and well worth your time and money. If your lookin' for a good scare, this book will deliver the chills! Enjoy! ... Read more

Editorial Review

There are writers who would be horrified at the tactics laid out in Guerrilla Marketing for Writers, perhaps because marketing oneself as one might a commodity is at odds with the artistic temperament. Alas, those writers are unlikely to find themselves at the helm of such publishing fleets as the Chicken Soup or, well, Guerrilla Marketing series.

HarperCollins publishes 1,200 books a year, according to the authors of Guerrilla Marketing for Writers. Is there a snowball's chance in hell that their publicity department can adequately promote all of them? Of course not. Don't let someone else's publicity department drop the ball when it comes to your book. Guerrilla Marketing's 100 weapons for selling your work range from creating media kits and promotional calendars to appearing at book-group discussions and fundraisers. Each "weapon" is rated by its monetary cost to the author, and well over half are free. While the authors advise that this book will help in the promotion of "any kind of book, from poetry to textbooks," most of its tactics seem best suited to nonfiction. The authors' overarching philosophy? Think like an entrepreneur. "Don't think like a writer who has something to say; think like an author who has a lifetime of books, products, and services to sell." --Jane Steinberg ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Whether You Sell out to a Publisher . . .
or publish yourself, the author must do the Promotion. It is a sad
fact of publishing life: publishers do not promote books. They only
produce them and place them in bookstores. Fortunately, now there is a
Guerrilla Marketing book for those who need it the most-the
writer.

These three marketing geniuses help you assess your
strengths, arm you with the tools you will need, show you how to
promote your book and generously share their years of experience
marketing books. This book is brimming with every conceivable book
marketing and promotion idea. Some are expensive and some are
free. Some are hard and some are easy. Some require you to personally
flog your own book and some are remote and anonymous. Enlist now and
requisition your weapons. Don't go into the publishing jungle
unarmed.

As a publisher and an author of 113 books (including
revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine
articles, I highly recommend this book to both authors and publishers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guerilla Marketing For Writers
Equip yourself with first-rate salemanship skills. Reading Guerilla Marketing For Writers is like taking a marketing course. The book is full of strategies for self-promotion. Beginning with an up-to-date assessment of publishing trends, Part I offers insight into all areas of the field. Included are "The Fifteen Most Important Marketing Secrets," and "The Guerilla Marketing Commandments". Part II explores your role as a marketer, and tactics for selling your books and gaining publicity. A section is devoted to setting goals and mapping a plan. Part III, "Weapons Galore To Help you Sell More," includes interview ideas, instructions for building a media kit, and information to include in a press reolease or bio. There are also suggested methods for evaluation and several pages devoted to articles and short stories. PartIV addresses professionalism and ways to market your identity. The book concludes with several useful tools, including a resource directory, subject appendix, and publicity questionnaire. I highly recommend this book. Few deal with marketing issues as creatively or clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Jay and friends
If you are looking for a book filled with many ideas on how to sell more books-this is the book for you. Some of the ideas will cost money, others are basically cost-free to implement.

Please note: The greatest method to improve you book sales (promotion) is YOUR imagination. You have to use your creativity. You have to improvise many of the ideas in this book to best suit your needs. So put on your thinking cap and get to work!

The truth is, the greatest way to make your book a runaway best seller is by word of mouth. You have to create a great product, a book that people will LOVE. A book that they will love to tell their friends about. Once you have people talking, you don't need to do any more work-they will sell the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Juiceman knows his juice.
This is the ultimate book on juicing. This is exactly what I wanted. Straight up juice recipes! No blender recipes (Well there are two at the end of the book for shakes but its minute after you read all the juice recipes). No add yogurt or soy milk and herbs. Nothing. Only add fruits and vegetables, just what I bought a juicer for juices! Jay delivers. His recipes are precise, being which he tells you how many carrots, how many apples, and tells the reader what the possible prevention tips of the particular juice are. My favorite is the juice for the sinus. And it does help. Also the energy and feeling you get from juicing is amazing. A pot of coffee could not get you going this good.
Now dont get me wrong there are good books on juicing out there but as stated above they want you to add other health ingredients (herbs and spices, soy milk etc...).Thats not the reason I wanted to juice.I wanted the benefits of juice and juice alone not something I can buy as a pill from the GNC and skip all the juicing. Buy this book if all you want are juice recipes. This is what it's all about.Straight up juicing!

3-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes, Questionable Medicine
As the satisfied owner of the product featured in the book, I am thankful for the often delicious recipes that Mr. Kordich included in this book. However, I don't believe a word of the psuedoscience behind his dietary maxims. Kordich describes juice combinations that will restore one's pancreas, liver or skin. I think that certified nutritionists would find these allegations questionable. Kordich instructs the juicing public not to mix fruit and vegetable juice (with a few exceptions) and to not mix melon juice with other fruits (like they would produce toxic gas or explode). The best advice is to use the juice as a tasty supplement to ensure decent nutrition, follow the recipes in "Power of Juicing," and read the rest for a laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars the original juicing book!
I`ve had this book for several years and its great. There are many delicious recipes in it.There are even recipes for specific ailments.Jay Kordich is the original juice man! Alot of people have jumped on the juicing bandwagon, like cherie Calbom and Jack Lalanne, but Jay was the very first to promote juicing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Abuse has no gender
Although much research is biased towards the most physically dangerous abusers, the ones who beat (don't like the word batter a lot) their victims and often kill them are usually men. There is of course, a lot of abuse perpetrated by mothers on children and women upon partners. Abuse is abuse, no matter what the gender, and all abuse harms children.
Lundy Bancroft deals primarily with the behaviors, patterns and impact of abuse. When anyone becomes a hardened habitual abuser who uses his or her power to intimidate, manipulate or terrify his or her victims into submission and control: he OR she is considered an 'abuser'. When they phsically hit, break bones and kill, he OR she is a 'batterer'. I work with a domestic violence agency and we have quite a few court ordered women in our program, albeit not as many as men (90% or more of the MOST serious battering is done by men the country over). I have read much of Bancroft's work and he is on target.

1-0 out of 5 stars Emperors new clothes
much of this book is unfortunate propaganda that harms more individuals then it can ever help. The domestic violence movement has an ignoble history that ignores then substitutes scientific research for this manufactured advocacy research that biases truth and put all of us at risk. Though it is clear if you are in the industry, you must subscribe to the lundy bancroft schoolk of thought. Men are bad, women are innocent, and if you cannot see that truth you are too ignorant to see the emperors clothes are made from the finest silken threads, gold, and jewels.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best professional book I have read.
This book should be a must read for all Guardian Ad Litems, Custody evaluators, Judges, Lawyers and Therapists. It explains how batterers act, why children often side with the batterer and gives an excellent guide for assessing visitation guidelines. I have only owned the book for two weeks and have already used it with three clients of mine. I am a LMFT and often work with children who have witnessed domestic violence, batterering and whose parents are fighting over custody. In reading this book I have a better understanding for the dymamics in a family with batterering. I now have research to support the things I have been recommending in regards to keeping children safe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning detail and art!
Bruce Spizer has described in greater detail than ever before an important - and often forgotten - chapter in the history of The Beatles before they hit it big in America. The VeeJay label goes down in history not only for taking a chance on the unknown British group, but also for the creative and exploitive ways they capitalized on a small catalog of songs and helped contribute to Beatlemania as we know it. Spizer's book is essential for any Beatles fan, but it is also a high-end book suitable for any collector. It is comparable in quality to Mark Lewisohn's books - high praise indeed!

5-0 out of 5 stars TWO THUMBS UP AND A RESOUNDING YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!
This book is the best friend of anybody who is seriously interested in the Beatles' records on VeeJay. Even the most well informed fan will come away with tidbits of fresh information. The writing is sharp, clear and well organized and the work itself is nonpareil.

All in all, an excellent job. This one is a keeper. It gets two thumbs up, loud cheering and a hearty yeah, yeah, yeah!

5-0 out of 5 stars VJ stands for Very Jumbled
The story itself is absolutely mind boggling. This incredible tale has more loose ends than a rastafarian hat factory, and just as incredibly, Mr. Spizer pulls all of the threads together into a coherent whole and ties it up in spectacular fashion. The bumbling, cheating, lying, greedy characters that make up the story of how a record company missed the brass ring and lost the Beatles almost plays out like a soap opera....but it's all true! This is one of those cases where the truth is stranger than fiction. And while the story plays itself out, one is overwhelmed by the shear volume of product that an albums worth of songs engenders. If you think that Capitol "Butchered" the Beatles, you ain't read nothin' yet. The book is replete with scads of dazzling pictures of everything from record labels to court documents and everything in between. If you're a dihard Beatles fan or a just interested in stories with a twisted plot, you won't be disappointed with this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...at least better than the movie
Let me start by saying that I really feel there is a good story here somewhere just dieing to be told. Unfortunately, I don't think this book quite hits the mark. I remember seeing the movie and being sorely disappointed in its execution. I was hoping this story would get a better treatment through the book and was only somewhat disappointed. Having grown up with a strong Mormon influence and having had several Mormon friends, I will say that the missionary characters seemed believable, Aaron in particular. Christian, the other lead character, was equally as well developed and credible. The details of the plot just seem to get a little lost as they are thrown together in the end. I found myself really wanting to feel more of the emotion in the end but just couldn't fully buy into it. The dialogue is quite humorous at times albeit short lived. The romance between the characters feels real and--well--I too love a happy ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deeper insights into the characters
This book will appeal mostly to those who have seen the film and are interested in finding more information out about the characters. Hopefully, however, people around the world who can't see this film or can't wait for the DVD release will take a chance and read this faithful novelization that provides more backstory to some of the characters. The novelization is solidly written with the same great depth that screenwriter C. Jay Cox gave his characters. Those of you who read this book will find it enjoyable and an outstanding companion to the film. If you haven't seen the movie yet, the book gives an overall better feel for the time that passes between beginning and end.

You will fall for these characters. You'll laugh, cry and cheer. I recommend this book HIGHLY and hope it's message of love is heard around the world, just as I hope the film gets the rewards (and awards) it so rightly deserves.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Engaging Story
I have read the book, but not seen the movie. Other reviews have indicated that it's mostly a print version of the movie, which I don't doubt(see below).

It's a compelling story that's pretty well put together. There are some plot developments that are improbable, and in a couple of places the characters behave in ways that aren't readily believable, but are possible. There are some fairly heavy scenes, too; any book that can make me cry has definitely made an emotional impact.

I'm not entirely sure that someone who's straight would react the same way, though... I'm gay, and from a church that basically everyone considers to be fundamentalist (though not the Mormons). So some of the things that I thought were most moving might roll right by someone who doesn't have the same cultural background. I plan to give it to some straight friends (including one or two from church) to test my hypothesis. And, FWIW, I thought that what was in the book about how the Mormons go about setting up their mission teams and evangelizing was very interesting. Given that C. Jay Cox grew up in the church, I assume they're accurate. I'll definitely be more sympathetic the next time I see them out and about somewhere.

If the book itself has a failing, it's that it goes by very fast. There may be more character development than in the movie, but there's room for still more. To some degree, however, that can probably be said of any story. Oh, one other thing: if you haven't seen the movie, the trailer available on the film's Web site has a spoiler or two in it... that's relevant for either the movie or the book. ... Read more
