Excellent resource on a growing phenomenon
Written by a therapist who has personal involvement with grandparents raising grandchildren and who has organized support groups for such, this book provides a thought-provoking look at a growing phenomenon. De Toledo dicsusses how these family units are created and identifies the needs of the individuals involved. She continues by describing the legal, governmental, educational and social welfare implications of such arrangements and encourages strong support sytems. Making this even more relevant is de Toledo's generous use of anecdotes and grandparents' own words. The book concludes with appendices of resources for grandparent caregivers and conversation topics for support groups. A bibliography and index are also provided. The book is available in both hardback and paper editions. As a grandparent who is raising three grandchildren, this reviewer found this book to be credible, insightful and informative. ... Nice coffee table book but not much substance
I think this is a lovely little book, particularly the drawings! This makes a nice coffee table book or one to kind of skim through. But if you're in search of serious information regarding traditions and wisdom, you'd do better to find a book with more substance. Pam England's book Birthing From Within, for example, not only provides many of the same suggestions for rituals, it also provides a lot of great information to help prepare one for labor. A book that looks at current infant-rearing traditions in different cultures is Meredith Small's Our babies Ourselves: how biology and culture shape the way we parent. Small's book is fabulous- gives you a lot to think about in terms of how cultural beliefs influence our values and parenting choices.

Rainy Days and Saturdays
I loved the book because it gives me a lot of ideas to try out with my son. The ideas in the book are imaginative, creative and fun. Some of the activities are quite difficult but overall, its a fairly good compilation of activities to do with kids. Great book for anybody wishing to enter a clinical trial.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about entering a clinical trial. Research Studies are valuable tools for learning about diseases, and sometimes the only way to find a cure for a disease. But you have to understand to risk and side affects associated with them. Interesting, informative, and optimistic
This book had some great information that I hadn't read in other similar titles. I was most interested in the sections on movement therapies such as yoga and qi gong, although I wish there had been more specific information such as particular yoga poses that are beneficial. Many times in this book, the reader is told to consult a professional (yoga teacher, naturopath, accupuncturist) rather than being told what they can specifically do on their own. I suppose that is the most prudent course. Still, this book exposed me to some new ideas and I ended up feeling more optimistic than I had before I read it about my chances to conceive. ... Not what I expected, but good!
This book was not what I expected, but good. I like the way Bobbie starts each chapter with a verse from the Bible. Great pictures!!

This was a very good story, it's not a book really, but it's good. It's filled with pictures! Besides, even if Bobbi goes off track, they're all true stories!

Worthwhile contribution to the subject
Gay and lesbian parenting is a firecracker of an issue that won't go away even when gays and lesbians are free to raise children. This book is an intelligent examination of the subject, although as others have mentioned, it's not necessarily intended for the "lay" reader. Nonetheless, it's worth reading for anyone interested in the subject...

mistitled but still informative for the right audience
This book should really be titled "Lesbian and Gay Parenting" because the bulk of the book looks at the lesbian experience and the one chapters dealing with gays are looking at a book of fiction. The book is geared toward therapists I'd say because it talks a lot about cases and approaches for the therapist who is trying to help a lesbian couple decide to bring children into their family. Freud is relied on a bit too heavily for my tastes, but hey, I'm not the intended audience.

Great guide!
This is a great guide to selecting appropriate books for children. In addition, it is inspiring. Now I can't wait to read to and with my kids.

making family time matter
The thing about parenting is that we all assume it comes naturally & easily. Anyone in this modern world who's been there & done it knows it ain't so! When your children whine about being bored, I bet most of us silently agree "Me too!"

Many people have a breakfast nook or a place kids can play/draw/sit and this is a way mom can cook and supervise 5-minute activities. You can make up a list of things to buy or just look around the house for things you already have and organize them all in one place.

This book also includes jokes, trivia, riddles, quotes and fun facts to encourage your children to be more curious about the world. Great for rainy days, birthday parties, holidays or just because.

First, let me say that this book is quite pricey .... I... Having said this, I found the book very helpful. It outlines how KIDS CARE CLUB was founded and how you can start your own version. I first learned about Kids Care through a brief notice in the business/tech section of my local newspaper which mentioned the Kids Care website. Kids Care Clubs offer kids and youth opportunities to serve those in their communities through a wide variety of hands-on projects. The book outlines how Kids Care got its start in Connecticut. The book also contained a number of possible service projects for a Kids Care Club to consider.
