5-0 out of 5 stars Voice Dialogue Facilitation Made Easy!
This 312-page manual is the definitive reference book on the how-to of being an effective voice dialogue facilitator, whether beginner or advanced. Author Miriam Dyak has been a senior trainer for Drs. Hal and Sidra Stone, the originators of this body of work, since 1983. The book leads the reader step-by-step through each important element of the facilitation process. It is thorough without being complicated and effortless to digest. The reader is drawn into participation by the numerous sample sessions along with invitations to assume the facilitator's role and decide on the best course of action. Drawings, diagrams, and interesting design lay-out all contribute to greater ease and fullness of comprehension.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!
I am thankful to Miriam Dyak for producing such a complete reference guide for Voice Dialogue facilitation. As I study and practice this work, this book continues to be an invaluable resource. The information on energetics is especially insightful. Even if you are an experienced facilitator, this guide will illuminate new and creative ways of approaching the work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Voice Dialogue Facilitators!
As teachers and innovators, we have always hoped that the people who work with us will understand the work and grasp the very basics of what it is that we are trying to present to the world. Miriam Dyak has done just that in her brilliant and marvelously readable new book, The Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Handbook. In this, and its accompanying Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Teaching Kit, she presents a detailed, step by step picture of how to do Voice Dialogue and extremely valuable suggestions about what you can do to become a truly top-notch facilitator.

Over the years there have been many changes in our approach to working with selves using Voice Dialogue. First of all, we have increased our emphasis upon the energetic components of the work with selves. Second, and perhaps even more important, we have emphasized the use of Voice Dialogue not only to explore the selves, their history, and their impact upon the way we live our lives, but to use it quite deliberately to create an Aware Ego.

The new Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Handbook outlines the basics of Voice Dialogue and provides clear guidance on our most recent approaches to the work. Miriam has been active in the Voice Dialogue community since 1983, is a senior Voice Dialogue teacher, and is an author in her own right. She has served on staff with us at "Summer Kamp" and for our Level II and Level III trainings at Delos. While writing The Voice Dialogue Facilitator's Handbook, Miriam spent three years attending our training intensives as both staff and observer to gather and organize the most up to date information on this body of work. She listened to our presentations, watched us conducting sessions, watched our very best facilitators at work, and watched novices as they began their very first facilitations. She taught facilitation to workshop participants at all levels of expertise and carefully observed what was needed to help them to do their very best.

A tremendous amount of material in the form of notes and audiocassette tapes was generated in this way. This information covered both the theoretical and practical aspects of the work. To add to all of this, Miriam also interviewed other senior teachers and facilitators, soliciting input based upon their expertise. She also brings her own extensive experience as a very gifted and insightful facilitator to the understanding of Voice Dialogue. All of this information is combined into a remarkable handbook that truly invites the reader to explore Voice Dialogue facilitation through its clarity of presentation and simplicity of language.

So we say to you, if you are - or wish to be - a Voice Dialogue facilitator, we urge you to buy, enjoy, and use this incredibly valuable tool. It is currently the definitive "how to" work on Voice Dialogue facilitation.

4-0 out of 5 stars $6.95......What a steal!
When I saw this little cookbook for only $6.95 I thought I'd give it a try. Boy was I surpised. It was well organized with over 150 pages of recipes that are easy to read and follow. After living in Germany for three years I was looking for some authentic recipes that I could use to bring back some old memories, and they were there along with quite a few phases in German which really touched home. Many of the recipes are some of my favorites but I was disapointed that there a few classics left out like Jagersnitzel. Other then that the book was great! It's a real steal for only $6.95... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Recipes Practical Advice
I just got this book and ended up reading it cover to cover which I typically don't do for a cookbook! It just has so many good sounding, healthy looking, easy prep recipes for my family. She uses whole wheat flour and trys to cut down on white sugar but does not use ingredients that are hard to find.
My three little boys loved the honey mustard chicken and it was so easy that my husband who doesn't venture beyond making pb&j or cereal made it. Today I am having the leftovers with sprouts and hummus in pita. I think this is a good book for busy people interested in eating healthier not just at lunch but all the time. There are good ideas on how to recycling the odd amounts of leftover veggies and rice or pasta from dinner into great lunches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great sleepytime book
This is one of those wonderful books that you can read to your child at bedtime when they just want to hear the sound of your voice. there is nothing too exciting going on, you can just have your child close their eyes, you can stroke their hair, and read this sweet story. OR, during the day, you can animate all of the animals' voices and have the child touch the great tactile pages. It is a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An attention getter
My 16 month old grandson loves this book. Easy reading and the pictures of the animals are lovely illustrated. I have purchased another one for a baby shower gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite
This book is fantastic. The illustrations are beyond beautiful, and the story is so cute.

This book tells the story of a little polar bear cub searching for his mother. He gets all of his animal friends, including a fox, rabbit, owl, duck, and more to help him build a mother out of snow. Soon all of his friends have to go home and he is alone, but in the end his mother finds him and he's happy again.

This is an adorable book, and a must read, even if it's only for the illustrations. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Food memoirs often delve into the meaning of life. This hardly surprises--memories are as essential to daily life as the food that sustains us. Miriam's Kitchen blends recipes and food reminiscences with family narratives and observations about the author's personal evolution as a Jew. Ehrlich weaves the stories from four generations of family life, punctuated with powerful and often tragic memories. While her mother-in-law, Miriam, is teaching her to make chicken livers with noodles, Ehrlich unexpectedly learns how Miriam, her mother, and husband survived a Nazi labor camp in Poland during the Holocaust. Using vivid and bare yet discreet words, she graphically tells what they suffered and the nightmares that still haunt them.

Ehrlich's own story covers her transformation from a child whose family lit Sabbath candles but went boating on Yom Kippur, to an adult who chooses an Orthodox life marked by ambivalence about the rigors of being kosher and pride in what she is passing on to her children. Recipes for Honey Cake, Noodle Pudding, and many others are buried treasures hidden among Ehrlich's intense words. Sadly omitted is a recipe for potato kugel. Her grandmother uses this tempting pudding to good-naturedly test, taunt, and ultimately as the means for accepting her daughter Selina's non-Jewish fiancé into the family. Happily for us, 24 other tempting kosher recipes make up for this one missed dish. Miriam's Kitchen is a gripping and gratifying memoir of food, life, tragedy, and family survival. --Dana Jacobi ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Living kosher and liking it....
This book is a lot of things. It's a cookbook (although I will take a previous reviewer's warning to heart and be careful about following the recipes); it's a reminiscence of sorts (the memories of Ehrlich's mother-in-law Miriam and others about European/American/immigrant Jewish life in the era of World War II); and finally, it's a book about a certain way of Jewish living. All three of these books are wonderful.

The chapters with recipes in them put me in mind of the movie "The Big Night" (that's the one where you saw all that marvelous food being prepared in Stanley Tucci's restaurant in preparation for Louis Prima's visit). These parts of the book are the print equivalent - my mouth watered just reading about the preparation of those dishes.

The other parts of the book describe a world that's fast becoming extinct. There is a new wave of religious fervor in Judaism, but it's just not the same as the religion my grandparents observed. That was a meeting of the Old World with the New, and I don't really think that will happen again.

I do hope that Ehrlich writes a sequel (or some columns for distribution in newspapers or magazines). I'd like to know how she and her family are continuing to reconcile their version of religion with secular America. I'm sure it will become harder once Miriam and Jacob, her in-laws, pass on. They have been her teachers and guides (Miriam more so than Jacob), and I would like to know if she's truly acquired their commitment as well as their recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than A Cookbook- Much More!
Most people who read this book are women. I read this book because my wife was so affected by its content (she cried all the way through), that I just had to read it. I cried too! While the author catalogues her aging mother-in-laws unique recipes, she also reflects on the cycles and rhythms of life held by Jewish traditions. In effect, she is challenging all of us (not only Jews) to look at what valuables, or values, we can, and should, transmit to our children. We are also left with the deeper question of our responsibility, observant or not, to understand and pass along our family and religious traditions. In addition to your children, this book will make you want to connect with your entire family, and get in touch with the family history and traditions that make you who you really are. This book is heartily recommended. It also makes a great gift, especially for a Jewish relative or friend. And the recipes are good too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!
This author has written a treasure of a book, tying family stories, her own life, and the recipes together into one scrumptious feast. Literature meets cookbook and the result is fabulous. Many thanks to Mrs. Ehrlich for taking us with her on her journey. And bless Miriam for remembering.

One odd sidenote. My grandfather's family was from Bohemia and supposedly were Catholics. How strange to see what I thought were Bohemian words for pot roast and dumplings turn up here as Yiddish. Were the languages so fluid or similar or was a part of my family Jewish in the mid-1800s? Life can be a mystery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Incite Into the Scottie!
The book provides tremendous incite into the Scottish Terrier thanks to the years Miriam Stamm has spent as a breeder, owner and handler of Scotties. In fact, her kennel, Amstamm, is one of the most important breeding kennels in our country for furthering and protecting the breed.
If you own, are interested in or about to acquire a Scottish terrier buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

This is a special book reflective of the Scottie as a special breed!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
There is a tremendous amount of information in this book that's generic and could apply to any dog breed. I was looking for information specific to the Scottie and was largely disappointed. When I got to the page where the authors talk about when your dog gets to 55 lbs. size, my attention waned -- Scotties are around 20 lbs. full grown! In large portions of the book, you could change the title and pictures, and you would be reading about any dog breed. The book also appeared to be somewhat of an 'infomercial.' It's disappointing in a book of this nature when one is directed to pet products by brand name, which I think challenges the credibility and impartiality of the authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good!!!

Customer Reviews (6)

5-0 out of 5 stars the entries are highly entertaining
Encyclopedia of Hell by Miriam Van Scott (Author) is another collection in dictionary style format (much like the book of angels, demons, and fairies reviewed earlier on the site here) which presents a very thorough overview of everything devilish from ancient cultures to modern day advertising. A very engrossing and interesting read, although its layout seems very academic, the entries are highly entertaining and make up for the academic approach this book provides. From Abadadon to Zoraster, this book covers it all, a great reference for those looking to spice up their library and get a better overview of how pervasive the influence of hell is in modern day society.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Definative
Miriam Van Scott's Encyclopedia of Hell is chock full of interesting definitions, descriptions, and anecdotes concerning many different aspects of devils, demons, occultists, and various underworld myths from across a wide range of religions and cultures. It contains brief descriptions of many lesser-known or obscure demonic and diabloic charaters and often long entries for other rather well-known people and places. Overall, this book is quite interesting and serves as a good quick reference guide. However, any encyclopedia of Hell is going to be a major affair that would seriously require seveal volumes. There has yet to be a truly all-inclusive effort to describe the myths and legends of the Underworld and everything related to the afterlife and the damnation of the soul. This books does its best to cover everything but falls short of being the last word on Hell.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cum Grano Salis
Over all, this is a decent book. However, be aware that there are some inaccuracies, possibly based on the author's personal biases. For example, Olodumare is not an underworld deity in the Yoruba pantheon, and neither is Obatala an underworld judge. Also, Wotan (Germanic) and Erlik (Siberian) are not deities who fell "out of grace" with a higher ('good') divinity. There are many more such examples. Either the author has deliberately skewed the information, or her sources are inaccurate. If you are buying this book in order to do serious research, be prepared to cross reference with other sources--preferably the originals. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven, but worth the time and trouble
If you are already a convert, you'll love this stuff. But if you're a curious scholar, like me, you're going to find this tough sledding at times. I don't like the way the book is organized. But I think most thinking people will find it a useful roadmap into the minds of feminists and it's a good place for men to begin if they want to get a handle on this important movement. Like it or not, the feminists are here to stay.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in school
Feminists of each generation, I think, have to do a lot of reinventing of the wheel. We don't know our own history, and although in 2001 we take for granted the ideas that women can be professional athletes or CEOs, that families are not all alike, that equal pay for equal work is fair and right...these ideas were once radical, and not that long ago. Likewise, in the 1970s universal suffrage was taken for granted...and the struggles of women activists in the 1920s were forgotten. This is a valuable collection of writings which gives us some of that history back. It covers important feminist thought from 1949 to 1993. This book holds important lessons for all of us, on religion, rape, health, pornography, family, race, sexual orientation...all manner of relevant and fascinating work.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who love women's history
Miriam Schneir's book, "Feminism in Our Time..." is an EXCELLENT text full of wonderful bits of powerful moments in American women's history. Her text features the work (in the form of essays, excerpts from books, speeches, or manifestos) of such authors as Simone de Beauvoir, Betty Friedan, Shulamith Firestone, Kate Millet, Anne Koedt, Adrienne Rich, and Anita Hill. In addition, at the beginning of each chapter and before each piece from these and other authors, Schneir provides crucial historical information. The experience of reading the works within this text will undoubtedly move any reader who has a passion for women's history (and for those who don't yet have the passion, this text will spark it) and inspire you to read more!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not really a paradise
First of all, Gimbutas was an eminent scholar, not a "fringe archaeologist". The fact that most archaeologists reject her theories does not prove that she was wrong. In fact, most, if not all, of her opponents has never seriously tried to explain why upper Palaeolithic and early neolithic symbolism is focused on women, while the latest neolithic and bronze symbolism clearly is cantered on men. No one of them ever had a good explanation for this fact - so why so harshly attacking Gimbutas who at least had a plausible theory?

In this book, published five years after Gimbutas death, the reader will get a good picture of Gimbutas theory of the goddess cult who, according to her, was the ideology of a matrifocal and matrilineal society. She is probably right in her main theory - at least none of her critics have a better alternative.

But... there is a contradiction between her tendency to idealize these societies and some known facts about some of them, facts that even Gimbutas acknowledge in this book. For example at page 106 the reader is informed that at the centre of the ritual circle Woodhenge, which Gimbutas sees a sacred place for the Goddess, "the archaeologists uncovered the crouched skeleton of a tree-year old child" . On the next page she argues that all the British "roundels" were sacred places for the Goddess and mentions "the sacrificial or ritual nature of their human remains". In fact , many of these human remains comes from small children, probably sacrificed when the circles where built.

Gimbutas was an eminent scholar, but when it comes to idealizing, it appears to have been a snake in the matrifocal paradise, at least in some regions, after all. If I have to choose, I prefer the Virgin of Guadalupe before the goddess of Woodhenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old European culture has survived in its living goddesses.
For those familiar with Gimbutas's earlier works, Part I is a refresher course on how the peoples of Neolithic Europe saw the Goddess. Especially interesting are the chapters on Stonehenge and other temples and ceremonial centers of wood stone and wood throughout Britain and the continent. The book's greatest value, however, lies in Part II, which comprises chapters on the Minoan, Greek, Etruscan, Basque, Celtic, Germanic, and Baltic religions. Gimbutas and Dexter explain with precision and clarity how the civilization of early historical Europe was an amalgam containing both Old and Indo-European elements. The Old Europeans were already there, of course, working the land, building cities, creating their elegant pottery, worshipping in temples sometimes miscalled palaces or fortified settlements. The Indo-European tribes came and saw and conquered. And then they settled in. Yes, they made terrible changes, but they also intermarried and adopted, and life went on. Much remained and was transformed. Although we are, for example, perhaps most familiar with the Greek gods and goddesses, we may not be familiar with their Old European ancestors. Hekate, Artemis, Athena, and Hera survived from Old Europe. So did some of the Greek gods, including Hermes, Pan, and (amazingly) Zeus. The information on the Balts is especially interesting, for they were the last pagans in Europe and their region "represents the greatest repository of Old European beliefs and traditions." This is the paganism Marija Gimbutas experienced as a child in Lithuania. Some who espouse the "culture wars" would have us believe that Gimbutas made it all up. This book is proof that she simply reported what she found. It is a testament to her extraordinary scholarship in archaeology, folklore, history, and matrilineal culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kirkus reviewer obviously did not read the book!
The evidence laid out in this series of works is very compelling. The critics of these ideas seem only able to express themselves with "Preposterous!" or "Idiotic" but never with a calm rational comparison of data and artifacts.

The Kirkus reviewer says it is "bordering on the ridiculous" to assume that the bull could have been a female symbol, that this is Gimbutas' imagination. But then there is artwork remaining from this era with clear pictures of bull skulls with horns drawn over the pelvic areas of women, with the horns positioned where the fallopian tubes would be. This murals are reproduced in the book. Had the reviewer wanted to actually check what the book presented as evidence for this assertion, he or she would have been able to find this mural. Bull skulls painted over the pelvises of women, the symbolism is hard to dismiss.

The critics of Gimbutas either don't read her work or address people who have never read her work themselves.

Seeing the anger and spite towards this body of scholarly work leaves me wondering why is there so much hatred and antagonism towards the work of Gimbutas? Why are there so many irrational and inaccurate criticisms of her body of work?

The Kirkus reviewer was sloppy -- if he or she had bothered to read the book being reviewed, then he or she would have had access to the data that supports Gimbutas' assignment of the bucranium, the head and horns of ther bull, as a uterine symbol.

What kind of fly-by-night operation is Kirkus that they allow such sloppy reviews by someone who will make an attack on a position presented in the book without actually looking at the physical evidence for this position that is decribed and presented and footnoted properly in the book itself?

I am not impressed by the critic of Gimbutas. I haven't seen a criticism that was either accurate or unemotional. ... Read more

"The True Work of Dying" is a valuable book for any Hospice worker or volunteer and anyone else dealing with its subject. It is filled with helpful insights and informations. Some of the death stories shared are amazing and a helpful guide to stay open and open-minded to the many ways and possibilities of the dying process and death. 5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific whodunnit, with a marvelous cast of characters
Miriam Grace Monfredo is one of the best historical mystery writers today, and her skills are well displayed in this book, the second in the Glynis Tryon series set in the upstate New York town of Seneca Falls in the middle of the 19th century. Glynis is the town librarian, with a strong belief in women's suffrage (along with her friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton). Until this story unfolds, however, she has been less supportive of the abolitionist cause which was strongly supported around Seneca Falls through participation in the Underground Railroad. Through the events linked to this murder mystery, however, Glynis is forced to rethink her position and ends up travelling as far as Richmond to fight against the Fugitive Slave Act.

One of the best things about Monfredo's stories is that she shares with you an entire town, in all its complexity and liveliness. Every character in the book is lovingly and lavishly drawn, and several plots unfold simultaneously which gives the stories a feeling of authenticity that is hard to beat.

You will want to rush out and buy the next story (Blackwater Spirits) immediately, to see how Glynis's friendship with the new Seneca/French constable, Jacques, turns out!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story
This is the second Glynis Tryon Mystery, and it is even better than the first one, "Seneca Falls Inheritance." It is now 1854, six years after "Inheritance," and the abolitionist debate is going strong. The Republican Party has just been founded in Ripon, Wisconsin.

Glynis strongly believes in obeying the law of the land, but she is unable to obey the Fugitive Slave Act by turning in Kiri, a lovely young girl who has escaped from a plantation in Virginia, and who is the beloved of Glynis' landlady's son, Niles. Glynis helps get Kiri to the home of Frederick Douglass, where she is hidden awaiting the opportunity to escape to Canada, where Niles plans to join her. When Niles is captured and taken to Virginia for trial, Glynis and Jeremiah Merrycoyf go to Virginia to try to save him. There ensues a fine courtroom drama, with Glynis turning up a key piece of evidence. Glynis and Merrycoyf return to Seneca Falls, and the villian, Thomas Farley, is unmasked.

This is but a small sample of the plot twists of this delightful book. It is a great read, and you will learn a bit of American history in the bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction At Its Best
I loved this book. Though it is the second in the series, it was the first one for me, and I intend to read the rest of the series now. It rates a close second to City Of Light in the realm of historical fiction based in my part of NY State. I like that it includes real characters along with the most important issues of the time, and murder, mystery, romance and good fictional character development. ... Read more
